Right, well just make sure you score mine at least a 9. And if I spot Bunnyman anywhere I'll return the favour.

When I woke up this morning I was like, wow, there are a lot of scripts posted! I thought they would come in smaller groups. Thanks for the work you put in!

I forgot that the hardest part of all of this is waiting to respond to feedback. I appreciate it, so even though you probably don't know who you are yet, I thank everyone who has read my script and responded, no matter how positive or negative the feedback is!

I would love feedback on any of these!

Love that Don posts all the scripts at once!

Also enables us as writers to see which titles make a first good impression.

After submitting my script last night, I told my wife I wasn't invested in what people might say about it. i'd wriiten the way I knew it should be written, I was happy with it, and...blah blah blah.

Today, that's out the window. Here I am, constantly checking to see if I have any new comments, responding in my head, etc etc.

Ah, I know exactly how you feel, Henry. I felt pretty good about what I wrote, bar a few things that now seem glaringly obvious post feedback, Soon as I upload I always immediately have that, maybe it's not as good as I think feeling. Typical really.. I do know with this one I'll rewrite after the challenge, so that's an improvement already, compared to prev OWCs.

A nice variety of scripts.  The comments showed how some readers liked what they read while others disliked the same script.

I sometimes felt readers were being overly critical, yet I think that everyone should feel proud of their accomplishment in completing the OWC.

Kudos,
Cindy

I notice the love it/hate it thing is a feature of OWC critiques, just like in life with our opinions of films we see. In the end it's overall and most popularly liked by most that gets a mug, or Oscar.

Anonymity always results in a more, shall we say, candid review but I like that about the OWC, long as you don't resort to rude. Rude is just unnessary, constructive is good.

Let's also try to remember how something reads doesn't necessarily equate to its effectiveness on screen. I'm trying to bear this in mind when commenting. Of course if it's got both, that's ideal, and that's our job, to write well for the screen.

Yeah, I echo the "Way to go Don!" sentiment!  Not sure if there was an order to the listing, but since there are 33 scripts, I'm going to read the first five, then the last five, then six through ten, the last ten through six, etc.  That way the last listings get read for sure.

Didn't give the Pass/Consider/Recommend but can if that's what's required.  I thought we were to just going to vote when the Writers Sheet comes out.  But hey, what do I know.

I use pass, consider and recommend because when it comes time to vote I'll forget which scripts I liked and which I didn't. It happened in one OWC where I pretty much voted blind.

All read and reviewed, and given the fairly restrictive nature of the challenge there was a good variety and I thought the standard of writing was pretty good too... look forward to finding out who wrote what!

I'm going to try and read all, probably take the best part of the week to knock them out. I've been juggling my weekend as I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel for my series bible - a long time coming too.

Very good from what I've read so far!

is there a specific date your top 3 submissions need to be in by?  the names are released on the 26th, but i didn't see a date for voting.

Also, was there no significance to "(Where'd that come from?)"  i took that as part of the challenge.

thanks

I'd list my "work" here, but I don't know how to hyperlink.

"Career" Highlights
-2, count em, 2 credits on my IMDB page.
-One time a fairly prominent producer e-mailed me back.
-I have made more than $1000 with my writing!
-I've won 2 mugs... and a thong.  (polaroids of me in thong available for $10 through PM)

@vc_wg - because I crave attention

Conz, there's always a generous period Don allows for reads and reviews and then he sends us via email a voting form with all entries listed, you mark with Pass, Consider, Recommend.

As for the other query I think that was to create excitement/intrigue for the challenge.

I believe this challenge came about because Janet had a horrific experience with a cab driver in NYC where the driver locked all the doors and wouldn't let her out. I said, that would make a great OWC. I guess Don thought so too.

There have been a lot of comments on scripts that take place outside of a taxi not meeting the challenge.

I feel like this question and answer deserves a repost as they very much do meet the requirements of the challenge.

I think the issue is more that people did not see this post.

It clearly say it does not entirely have to take place in a taxi and that the interpretation will be left to the writer. Don says he "thinks" it should play a significant part not that it must, at least that’s the way it is written and the way I read it.

I feel that anyone that has discounted a script just because it is not set entirely in a taxi needs to have another think about the scripts they have passed on, or not.

QUESTION

“I'm not usually one that asks questions but:

Does the entire script have to take place in the Taxi?

Or does the being trapped in a taxi have to be a key part?"

ANSWER

"No, the entire script does not have to take place in the taxi.  With regard to being trapped in a taxi as having a key part, I'm going to leave that up to you. I think it should play a significant role.

- Don”

'Significant role', not tacked on, is my view.

Just a couple so far with my reading haven't qualified as meeting that challenge. I for one am being generous with the interpretation, as I think most are really.

Never miss an opportunity to try and come up with a great title for your story. It's worth the extra time. I noticed some of these scripts with the most reads and views have good titles, and it's the first thing your reader is gonna see.

Oh yes. I have to keep resisting the temptation to respond to comments! I got quite worked up yesterday about one and was going through numerous ripostes in my head and trying to think of how I could respond without giving the game away that I was the script's author!

I just want to say that my comments on these scripts are just generic for the most part.  I can/will give specific comments when the challenge is done if anyone wants my "two cents" worth!  Some good writing going on with some of these.  I'm more forgiving with some of the "errors" in the scripts due to the short notice of this OWC.  I think many of these could be made into a short film, so producers take note!

My Scripts:
SHORTS
Bed Bugs
I Got The Shaft
No Clowning Around
Fool's Gold
Five Days for Redemption

TELEVISION

Very strange how, before we've written our scripts and right up until we submit, we all agree that it's just a bit of fun. Then once the scripts are up and the first bad reviews start rolling in, how we crumble... like we honestly expected more.

Other writers are the most difficult audience to please... and what floats our boat often comes down to how smart and professional the writing is... unfortunately, smart and professional writing doesn't always equate to a good film off the page. We can also only think in terms of how we would write something and the choices we would have made that would be sooo much better. So, we're not the best judges. So... why do we care so much?

Interesting observation.

I think the caring so much probably comes from a need for validation or, probably more likely - fear of devaluation. Who knows.

I can only speak for me. I don't think that in general, you get more honest feedback in an anonymous contest like this one (egads - think how frank the feedback would be if the reviews were also anonymous!). I see what script that I'll love that someone else will hate and vice versa - so one's own sense of style and story play a big part. Just like in the real world.

I don't know if it's about caring so much.

I'd rather not leave a review at all. It's just I have to - to show that I read the thing. So I say something - usually it's my thoughts while reading.

I like to think that I have not changed the way I review scripts for the challenge and wouldn’t even if it was anonymous.

None of my comments are personal attacks on the writers. They are observations of how I personally think the scripts could be better and how the scripts personally made me feel, or not.

Just got to take what will help your writing and leave the rest.

All the bullshitters would finally tell the truth. Still though, the writers that pm others would likely insist they know which review is which. They'd still get around it. They're only cheating themselves, but for some that's enough.

Jeez, it's only a challenge for a mug. A mug I'd kill for, but even so...

Sadly, I can't see me getting a mug this time around either, but I'm happy with what I wrote and am actually currently rewriting it. A script I wouldn't likely have written without the challenge.

Have read all but two I think.

Thanks again, Don. Great to see the buzz on the boards around OWC time.

I know I keep talking about MoviePoet, but it truly had the best voting reviewing system I've ever seen. When reading the scripts, the scripts came up in random order. There was no list to chose scripts from. This resulted in all scripts getting an equal amount of reads. Good ones as well as bad ones. You couldn't skip ahead to the next script either. The system wouldn't let you get to the next one until you had voted and written a certain amount of words in the comment section. If anyone told you which script they had written and you wanted to read it, you just had to wait until it came up in the cue. This did, lead to quite harsh comments some times, but the praise felt real too.

Good luck everyone. It seems the entries submitted this time are pretty good over all.

I'm reading comments that scripts don't meet the challenge, when all that is required is "Trapped in a taxi". Does that mean fingers in the door? Surely, if the driver hates his job and needs to pay the bills, then he is 'trapped' as much as the ones where the passenger gets locked in?

- Don”

I saw the post.

I think there were a couple of scripts that did not meet the challenge of the parameters.

Of course the ENTIRE script does not have to be trapped in a taxi - but it should be central to the story - not just incidental. It also said low budget - there were a couple that stretched that rule.

If you did actually kill someone, would the photo when you are booked for the crime be the "Mug Shot" or the Mug - Mug Shot"?

Really?  C'mon now.

I think The Don made it pretty clear what the parameter(s) were, and it was physically trapped in a taxi.

As usual, many decided not to adhere to this very simple requirement.

I've "looked at" 24 and will hopefully finish the rest by tomorrow.

A few things

Criteria - these always get debated, but I would agree with Jeff that as its called 'trapped in a taxi', that should be fairly central to the story. As though you could have a close guess on the criteria having read the story. Some miss the mark. I recall the elevator script with no elevator!

As it happens if there was a great script that drifted off the criteria you may find it was forgiven when perhaps when it shouldn't, but that's life.

Voting and reviewing - I think this is a pretty good system. I don't engage with any PM's, never have, and I don't know if this happens much. I simply don't know. If all were anonymous then I feel there would be positives and negatives. Some would review more honestly, if they hold back now, but others would let rip without restraint and without seeking to add positives in terms of what works or not. I gain so much from comments of what didn't work, what needs improvement etc some accountability is good.

If we look back over the past few years, there have been few scripts that I thought didn't deserve their place. The system works adequately well.

Except for this OWC when readers are clearly missing the genius of my script ...

It is all a manner of risk assumption on the part of the author.

One should assume that:

If you are not trapped in a taxi for a good portion of your script, you're going to lose some votes due to perceived rule violations.

If there are mental traps (I hate driving a taxi) vs physical ones - you are going to lose some votes.

If you have special effects - you are going to lose some votes.

But that's the nature of the game. Write what you want but live with the consequences.

I wrote Altered Egos for the last challenge (A made up Super Hero). I got some - outside the rules" comments because it also contained a good dose of real heroes and therefore they thought it violated the challenge. I didn't - but certainly good see it as a risk. It should be chalked up as an "oh well".

I don't really mind about the mug. I have one. In fact, I'm drinking from it right now - a nice arabica from Nicaragua.

I find it annoying that writers can't enter a script and take what's coming without their egos being bruised too badly. I experienced this in an earlier OWC where I knew I'd written a bad story. However when the reviews came in telling me what I already knew, I was offended by it. Not that much... but it was enough for me to take notice and I had to teach myself not to take it to heart.

Some writers here can't do that and they resort to tactics like giving their script away early - obviously this means that reviewers will be less inclined to drop further bad reviews. The other trick is to pm members and share which script is theirs - even going as far as to give each other recommendation votes... not for any desire to win, but purely so that things look good on the surface. Obviously digging deeper and reading the script will lift the thin polish off the turd.. but none of that matters to these writers.

Dustin is right.  I often wonder as well why negative reviews upsets peeps.  And usually, it's plain as day what a poorly written script is and deserves.

Back in the day, SS'ers often PM'd and E-Mailed each other as to which entry was theirs.  There were alot of little clicks, and these peeps definitely went out of their way to not bash a friend's script.

I go out of my way to tell peeps not to tell me which is theirs until after I've commented on it already.  It's definitely not fair to do this sort of thing.

Exactly. I'm guessing every single challenge there is some debate about the rules. If you want to avoid the risk of losing votes, pick something that is indisputably trapped. If you don't care about losing votes or are willing to risk it because you have an amazing story, then accept the consequences.

I am going to be very forgiving in applying the rules. Others will be very strict, just the way it goes...

Didn't know that happened and I don't like the sound of it one bit. But at the end of the day, it's just hurting that writer. He/she is losing honest, potentially valuable critique to get validation instead. It won't help them in the long run.

That rug really tied the room together.

I think any author will identify with a script that is similair to theirs in reviwing it re the criteria.

Because I always adhere to the requirements (life discipline and i loathe any type of 'cheating') then if the script has to pretty much include 'trapped in a taxi' as the main theme then my script will have it to the letter.

I've read about 18 so far and only about 5 or 6 have that criteria.

My antibiotics finally seem to be kicking in and I am feeling better so I'm trying to review as many scripts as I can. I've really enjoyed them for the most part, a top OWC so far. I wish I'd felt better last week, would have loved to have taken part but I have no idea what story I would have come up with!

Just reading on the BBC that Uber are planning to trial self drive cars in Pittsburgh. Given that a number of OWC scripts have featured such cars bumping off their passengers, I think, if I were an inhabitant of that city, I'd probably give them a miss...

A few scripts left to go and pretty impressed with the batch overall. Many wouldn't be to my taste as films, but for the most part they've been enjoyable reads with at least one interesting idea or choice.

A few could easily be produced by the right team.

Stop the presses...there's a mug at stake?! Dang, I should've done that 'one last proof'.

I'm about 2/3 through and there are some very worthy candidates. Thanks to all and your candid observations and criticisms. I've already taken suggestions to heart and did a major re-write just to see and, behold! Something that seems worthy! Good luck to all.

an email goes out for your top 3 picks, right?

I'd list my "work" here, but I don't know how to hyperlink.

"Career" Highlights
-2, count em, 2 credits on my IMDB page.
-One time a fairly prominent producer e-mailed me back.
-I have made more than $1000 with my writing!
-I've won 2 mugs... and a thong.  (polaroids of me in thong available for $10 through PM)

I'm hoping that we can rec and consider as many as we want. I think I have at least 4 recs this time around. If I can only pick 3 then I'll just go by alphabetical order.

Done - done and done.

Felt this was a really solid representation.

I ended up with 4 Recommends.

I did think that there were two scripts that did not meet the parameters of the challenge.

Thanks Don for putting this on.

3 Considers:

Well done to all the writers and I hope, votes aside, that you've written something you are happy with and that your stories find homes with producers.

A big thanks to Don for taking time out to run this thing.

I did read all of the scripts, I just decided not to comment on one or two. If you don't see my comment on your story, it means it was a pass.

Voted.

Al the best to everyone. I won't know the outcome for a couple of weeks, but I know I'm not going to be taking part.

I can't say any script blew me away, and I tend to find one or two each OWC, but some solid efforts.

As ever a tight set of criteria still leads to a variety.

Thanks Don

There were a lot of good scripts.

Like Reef, I can't say any blew my mind, but then it's a tall order in a week, let alone when you have to squeeze some criteria in as well. The weaknesses of a lot of scripts were due to trying to conform their stories to the limitations. Mine included. All part of the challenge, of course.

I didn't read them all, so I won't be voting. I know you can vote on what you've read, but I prefer to have read them all.

Of the ones I read, A.M.A was the most fully realised.

Anyway,  just want to say I found the  'trapped in a Taxi' scripts were very varied and well done overall. Good on everyone for delivering some solid ideas.

Sorry guys,  I'm really slow on doing this.  I just moved and it has been brutal.  I am reading what I can and doing my best...

Does anyone know when voting is over by?  I will do my best to read them all and send it in...

I haven't even looked at the comments on mine.  I have a feeling that peeps didn't like it, so, that's sucks...

I had a different interpretation of "trapped in a taxi" then some did.  I had asked about that, but, I think I should have gone with a more literal definition of it.

If I don't get them all read, I will merely vote for what I've read.  I know I'm near 20 of the 30, so, it's not like I only read 2 or 3.  I hope you guys forgive me.

Moving sucks.  Moving when your disabled sucks even worse, if that's possible...

Dan

Please read my scripts:
http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-series/m-1427564706/

I'm interested in reading animation, horror, sci fy, suspense, fantasy, and anything that is good.  I enjoy writing the same.  Looking to team with anyone!

Thanks
Dan

I think I've reviewed them all now. Overall a very varied and interesting bunch of scripts. I really enjoyed reading them. Well done to all who entered and I hope the comments help you develop and grow as a writer.

Think I've finished now, some interesting twists on the theme and a good variety of scripts overall.

Any idea what you're supposed to do when it comes to voting and your script is on the list?? I'm assuming it's poor etiquette to give yourself a recommend! Not that it would help my effort this time round, a good few in there absolutely smoked mine

You don't have to mark any script if you don't want to, you can just leave them - so you can simply skip your own. I wonder if anyone will actually vote for their own?

I was interested to see that this is a different way of marking them this time - when I was last a regular here I think we picked our three favourites rather than marking every script.

I have read all of the scripts though not yet commented on all - I am having severe internet issues at the moment and am lucky if I can stay online for more than a few minutes at a time. But hope to post a few more comments yet, for what it's worth.

The option 'did not read' is what I select for my own script. It's very tempting to vote for my own but the damage to my integrity just isn't worth it. I do wonder how many other writers are able to resist the urge.

I'm pretty sure the voting is set up so votes for your own scripts are void.

I just leave my script blank - don't indicate anything. You shouldn't vote on your own IMO

Ten read so far, and I've only passed on four of them (and one of them, I'd consider with a MASSIVE rewrite).

22 more to go. I'll read as many as I can before the voting deadline.

Next one I'm gonna read tomorrow is Gostla Bell. But for now, I'm calling it a night.

I doubt that anyone will guess the one that I wrote.  Most peeps didn't like it, but, at least I tried something new.
I failed, but, at least I tried something that I had never done before.  That's how you learn, right??

I really don't know who wrote what.  That's why I wish we had a list of names of people who did submit.  That way, this week could be a lot of fun guessing who wrote what.

I know I wrote one.  So did Dustin, Janet, and Libby.  I am guessing that Conz and Steve wrote one also.  I know Jeff DIDN'T write one, he was just nice enough to read them (very nice of you).  I can also guess that Bill and Anthony submitted as well.

Anyone else want to "out" themselves as having submitted.

Please read my scripts:

Finally read them all. Think there's like 3 or 4 I haven't commented on so I'll probably do a few more at some point. Might go back and reread a couple too. But I will say I was amazed at the overall quality. So many good scripts and talented writers here.

Thanks to Don for running this and everything you do. I wanna ramble on for five more paragraphs about how awesome this site is but I'll restrain myself.

The votes are not over yet. I'd deny a script was mine too. I like Johnny Nuts for Speed Relationship-ing. Reminds me of his elevator script. I think it was the elevator script. Where the whole date thing played out in an elevator.

All The Fives - Stevemiles, for the style and solid writing.

Now I think of it the Zombie tale could be Janet, (she likes a bit of blood) and Relationship-ing could be Dave.  More speculation continues...

Trying to guess what Henry wrote, hmm...

Or maybe I'll give up.

I am not any good at figuring out who wrote what.  SO, I won't even guess.  SO, Jeff DID enter??  I didn't realize.

I doubt anyone will expect the story they read from me.  I've gotten a few passes, but, most have said it was pretty ambitious, but, confusing.  I guess that's an improvement.

I see myself going on an upward tick.  And I was trying something new.  So, while disappointed that some didn't like it, branching out is always risky.

That's why Hollywood says to focus on stuff you do and enjoy and not sell (or try to sell stuff) from genres you don't like b/c you might get pigeon-holed into writing a genre you don't care for.

Eh, the tragedy of writing love stories for the rest of my life....  Where is that gun??

I read twenty this time.
And out of 20 I would recommend AMA, Destinations and Hattippers, Fair's Fare, Alternate Route.
And there would be a lot of considers.
If I submitted one... I would.

I done that before. It usually backfires- either a) peeps will know I wrote it or b) my in depth comments make it so where other peeps won't comment because I said it all!

Note: I did not do that this time.

I did not enter, but I did comment on every script.

If I were voting, I'd vote for...

Driven to Death

followed by...

a 3 way tie for 2nd, with...

Fair's Fare, Red Light Indicates...and A.M.A.

Followed by a 3 way tie for 3rd, with...

Whiteout on Route 89, Speed Relationhiping, and Hard Fare

And a Special Consider to one of the most memorable scripts this time around...

Was that the funeral one? If so, I had Henry down for that.

Nah, it's about a woman who mournes her daughter. A beautiful script and now I'll never know the author. If I didn't know who wrote it -not me, be sure of that.

@the author - I won't tell anyone.

I never have a clue on who wrote what other than I can generally separate the U.S. writers vs. the Brits ( or are they Aussies???.

Oh, yeah, I remember that one. Should've hung in there.

I still have some to read before voting. I probably won't be able to comment on all, and I'll have to go back through most to remind myself which was which. I made the mistake of not making notes.

I'll have more recommends and considers than usual. Kudos to all.

I don't understand why someone would pull their work.  My first ever entry did awful and I was crushed.  I just hung in there and took the criticisms as a bunch of jerks

KIDDING

NAH, I took the criticism to heart and used it to fix my errors and try to be a better writer.  Now, I'm tackling genres that I NEVER thought I'd write, like ever.

Last one was a comedy.  This one was a drama, for the most part.  Yes, there were issues, I tried a very difficult technical trick and it didn't work.  But, I can safely say that a year ago, I NEVER would have even attempted that.

I use these as a barometer of how I'm progressing as a writer.  Believe it or not, this one still had its critics, Dustin, Jeff, others, but, at least this time I also got a few compliments about how ambitious it was.  That made me feel good.

As writers, we have to pick and choose what each piece means and how the advice can help us.

That's why if any of my friends rip it, I never take it personally.  I want to know the truth, no matter how awful.  At least here, I can fix it.

I'm working on rewrites of a few OWC.  I think I might try to fix this one too, simply because I want to have something from each genre in my bag of tricks.   You never know if you sell something, or a producer/director/person with cash might not like one story, but, interested in your style and ask you what else you have.

I read stories like that all the time online.  So, I know they happen.  While I admit that the idea of being pigeon-holed into writing comedies or dramas for the rest of my life would terrify me (Hollywood is very much like the music industry in that they want the same over and over, no chances), I can alter my ideas to be more of the fringe of any genre and still be my story, at least I hope I can.  I mean, I can turn a slasher into a love story, right?

Like, Like, ahemmmm   Oh, I married an Axe Murderer.  Oh, that did bad at the box office...

Yeah, I'd be screwed, but, at least I'd have one sale

Dan

ps, I think people will be a bit surprised at what I wrote.  It's very different from everything else on this site.

Please read my scripts:

Lols, I'm having the opposite experience! My first one went really well, this one not so. Totally agree though, no one should be embarrassed enough to pull their effort down. Take your lumps, and learn from it, I know I will have to after this OWC!

TBH, I'd say all of the entries here have been of a good enough standard, so no one should be embarrassed. If anyone's having a crisis of conscience they just need to read some of the 1 pagers on the last challenge

To be fair, we don't know why the author removed it - may not have anything to do with criticism. Maybe they had an offer on it, or saw potential for a feature or any number of other reasons.

It might be personal - the script might be autobiographical or something. Actually, that's what I thought when read it.

Well if that's the case then fair play, injecting personal elements into screenplays always is a bit risky, especially if others are judging you in a blind read challenge like this

Whatever the reason, I thought that was a gutsy script. I know the comments were negative but whoever wrote that you should be proud you tried something a little different.

Quoted from Warren
I was so sure James (MarkItZero) wrote AMA, then he commented on it... Hmm?

I was sure I'd be able to spot a couple people but they all start to run together...

Warren I think might be Taxi Joe, which I wasn't a huge fan of, don't hate me Warren!

Dustin I'd say is Red Light, Driven to Death, or All the Fives.

When my Dad died of cancer in 2014 I found myself writing about it over and over - it became by far the biggest theme of my work, to such an extent that I had to stop writing because I felt I was stuck in a loop I couldn't escape from.

This was one reason for me doing the OWC - the set restrictions helped me create a story that broke completely away from this dominant element in my writing and do something new for a change.

Pity it'll get 32 passes...

That's both sad and amazing Simon.

If the emotions were spilling out in the other work, and you were able to find some comfort in it, then there's no reason why you shouldn't carry on in that vein. If it was getting a bit too painful, then regardless of the OWC challenge result it's the right way to go.

If the writing helps then just keep losing yourself in it

I thought I recognised a few here and there, but the more I think about it the less I'm sure.  Based on previous shorts I would have pegged Sorry Dave or A.M.A on Anthony C. but given the denial I’ll go with a Man Dies...   A stab in the dark would be Bill for Whiteout on Route 89.  Janet for Red Light?

That’s all I got.

Finally read them all.
Some top quality scripts and there's a few I could guess who wrote just by their replies

Based on the amount of F bombs alone dropped on Driven by death tells me it was wrote by Dustin.
I'd be very surprised if it wasn't.

Great job everyone

Well, then it must be a masterpiece as Kham said

No, I'm not in. My first idea was similar to the bank robber plot. The second was a cabbie committing suicide in a carwash (foam from the outside, blood from the inside was the visual idea). Most times the third concept is what I go for since there's not much time, right… but I wasn't inspired. Inspiration isn't the big deal but I need a bit of fire at least, so I refused to act and let it be, which is okay. It was a good challenge anyway. The quality is strong. It seems when the challenge is limited to members the performance is solid throughout.

Simon,  I didn't know you then, but, you have my condolences.  Losing a parent to cancer truly sucks the biggest of dicks.

Some find power in the writing.  Some find solace.  Perhaps you found the words to carry on during that difficult time.  Think about all the people who don't really recover from that (I know a few who just stopped living when their parent died) and I'm sure that your dad sees how you've dealt and handle it.

Thank you also for sharing that with us.  That is the one thing that I value most about this site is that for most of the regulars we are kinda an extended family rather then just a writing group.  I think it starts at the top with Don and then carries on down with the mods.  I know they let a lot of off-topic stuff slide when it pertains to real life.  Good for them.

You aren't the first to delve into a parental death.  The movie Return of the Living Dead part 3 was famous for that.  I know it gets ripped on a lot, but, I really enjoyed that one.  Or perhaps it was how hot Melinda Clarke was in it.  Or both.

The writer had just lost his father too, and really explored how far would you go?  So, I'm glad that writing helped you during that time.

Dan

It did help at the time - dealing with feelings of grief and guilt (I was consumed at the time with the belief that I could have done more than I did). I produced some good stories during the period as well - one, "To Paint That Love Upon a White Balloon", was the best thing I have ever written, in any medium. It was published this summer in my second short story collection.

Eventually though it became like a form of literary PTSD and I realised that I had to break the cycle and move on. My OWC could, in hindsight, have been about the theme - other people did deal with funerals and the passing of loved ones, but I was able to break away completely and do something totally different.

However it goes, I'm glad of the opportunity to do that anyway.

Thanks for your kind words Dan, and "Cammy". Much appreciated.

All read and voted.

The only one I didn't get to read was Hat Tippers, because it was removed.

Here's a breakdown:

31 scrips total (excluding mine and Hat Tippers)
15 recommends
5 considers
11 passes
1 pass/consider
1 heads/tails verdict
1 soft consider
1 consider with rewrite

Overall, pretty good. I need to pat myself on the back. This is the first OWC that I've read all of them; then again, it's my first OWC with an iPhone; I can pull up scripts when I'm away from my PC.

Congrats to everybody!

Yes, good work to everyone who entered.  I managed to read them all.  In between moving and being in agony, I did get them all read and commented.

I tried something new for mine, a drama.  Never wrote one before.

I guess this was the best received one yet with quite a few saying that it was quite ambitious.

I still have a long way to go, but, now, I will have my first screenwritten comedy and drama.  Pretty cool.

Yep, I have to fix them, but, there was a time, even a few months ago, where I NEVER would have attempted either genre.  So, I'm thankful for the ability to grow as a person and writer.

Simon, you're welcome.  I partially agree with that saying what doesn't kill you CAN make you stronger.  It can also leave you a burnt out husk of a person.

But, you've made it through, and all of us who have lost a parent know, it doesn't make you stronger, but, it does make you different.  How you use that difference goes a long way in life.

A few know my history and said I should write a book about it, but, honestly, it's more horror story and I doubt anyone would believe it...

Folks, trust me when I say that tomorrow isn't a given.  Don't put off till tomorrow that can be done today.  Whether that's calling your mom or dad, writing a story etc.

Do something each day that you can go to bed knowing that you DID something today that YOU wanted to do.  You just don't know.....

Just moved, so, I'm in grade 9 (out of 10) pain.  It sucks...

I gotta admit, the quality of the OWC shocked me.  I don't think there was a clear cut winner.  I had like 4 really solid stories that I could see getting the mug and another 4 that were really solid.

It's been really hot here (in Buffalo, NY USA) and I applaud those who could write in this wretched weather.  Great job all on a difficult topic in difficult conditions!!

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh! Try 40 and above in the shade with no A/C, or worse still nights on end trying to sleep with it and dying for the Southerly change to hit.

Bit like Croc Dundee - 'that's not a knife...'  That's not a heatwave... That said I get it. You guys are not used to it just like I'm a wimp in the cold. Been to the snow once. That was more than enough.

** Warren, what Dustin said, I do believe OWC results are in on 26th, unless Don posts early.

**And Henry, I'm not getting in one of them anytime soon! Maybe a flying car in the future, but I'm driving.

I think most of the scripts were pretty good.  Still amazed that 33 scripts could be written this well with such little notice (which I happened to like - way to go Don!).  Many of these could be produced so I'm hoping some ambitious filmmakers will be poking around and find some of these.

I liked the ones that took the "trapped" element and changed it a bit.  Some had the occupants trapped at the end.  I also think that some that people didn't feel met the challenge, could still get made.  Also, some of you also felt like I did, the driver of the taxi is sometimes the one "trapped" because he really can't leave!

Good job to all and I enjoy the heck out of this site!

Read em all. I'm not voting because I did not have a horse in this race.

I was surprised at the variety of entries. I realized about half way through that cab drivers were named Driver for clarity not because writers were too lazy to name their characters. For  me, as long as they thought they were trapped they were trapped but I can understand a tighter definition.

It was a pleasure reading your scripts and comments.

Good writing!

Lol, it’s true though. Like Simon, too much heat drives me bonkers. I like a mild, breezy 20 --> 25 degrees, it’s about all I can take. I know a few cops and they all cringe when it gets too hot around here, it tends to bring out the freaks for some reason… like a full moon. It’s a weird phenomenon, whereas the cold tends to make everyone docile.

Anyway… read them all, commented on about 95%. If I missed yours let me know (… as you can see, I’m leaving short lame ass comments this time around, so I don’t blame you if you back out of that offer). Outside of that, this OWC was a pretty good show of imagination for a week’s work. Curious to know who wrote what…

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh! Try 40 and above in the shade with no A/C, or worse still nights on end trying to sleep with it and dying for the Southerly change to hit.

Yep, left Melbourne a couple of months ago and those days in summer are absolutely brutal. My first son was born a couple of years when it was 40 degrees for a week, never been so happy to feel the cool change when it dipped down to 30! However we're in glasgow now so actually missing the type of weather, swings and bloody roundabouts!!!

Also the worst was when the big bushfires were on and it hit 46.5, all the leaves came of the trees and stepping out was like walking into an oven, brutal!!!!

You guys all seem to be talking in terms of Celsius temps, which I'm not familiar with.

We're over 100 degrees Fahrenheit pretty much every single day in the Summer, and we were over 120 a few days in June.

But that's perfect for me, as the A/C runs 24/7 between 76 during the day and down to a chilly 70 at night.  And, if I'm outside, I'm in my pool pretty much all the time.

I'm also looking forward to the reveal.  Good job this OWC by many writers!

Brits don't have AC at home and many workplaces don't have it either, we certainly don't have any use for pools, they just fill with rain water.

We're also not used to any sustained temperature highs as we normally get our summer interrupted by rain on every other day at the very least, most often we get our sustained rain interrupted by occasional bouts of sun - especially in Manchester and the north-west in general.

So if we do get a few days of 'high' temperatures then it is a big deal as we have an entirely different type of weather to complain about

On OWC related front, I think there was a very high standard this time!

Just as an FYI none of us growing up in Oz had A/C, it was unheard of. And it'd be rare if you knew someone with a pool. You'd make fast friends if you did! You suffered, (or went to the beach, then be stinking hot on the walk home), it was part of being an Aussie, tough it out. That's changed now, thank God, they're cheaper now, but you still only turn it on if it's baking, otherwise you're still a wimp. Unless of course you live in the West. I hate sweaty palms when writing.

P.S. You guys in the Mother Country are renowned for taking your shirts off when the dial goes over 25.

Getting closer now to WhoWW. Looking forward to it!

I grew up in Sweden. I can remember freezing to the point of hands, feet and face were numb and couldn't move. Even worse was the pain of circulation coming back to your hands and feet. I could tell many stories of suffering in in real freezing condition, but I chose not to. It's not exciting, nor inspiring. I live in Florida now and people complain about the heat and humidity, especially in the summer, but whenever I feel hot, I tell myself, you're not fucking freezing! My dream is to move even further south to the Caribbean somewhere and eventually die on a beautiful beach of old age with my feet in the sand. Maybe a rum bottle in my hand. No eye patch though.

I guess I would qualify as a "wimp", then, because I can't sleep in any temp over 72 degrees F.  Not gonna happen.

But I pay the price with a $600/month electric bill!  OUCH...it does hurt!

30 Celsius would be around 86 Fahrenheit. 72 F or thereabouts would actually be more normal for summer here.

I find it very hard to sleep in hot weather.  I very much prefer cold.  72 at night is hot.

We just moved, so, this new house has central air.  Much easier to sleep now...  The old apartment had one air conditioner and it never hit my bedroom, so, I had to use fans.  It was hot at night.  I typically run hot anyways, I find 50s to be warm... damn spine, right??

You know, I gotta say, getting back to the OWC, I was impressed how many reads each story got.  There was a good mix this time.

I don't know if it was the blowout from last time or Don's wording that all people who submitted had to read at least 5 (I think it should be raised to at least 50%, unless you have a solid reason why you can't, then we just have to understand)...

So, while I'm sad that my story didn't go over better, at least a few called it ambitious and that's not awful.  I just have to clean it up a bit.

This OWC was pretty successful with a lot of good stuff.

So, any guesses on who wrote what?  Anyone have any guesses on which one I wrote?  And I will say, it was NOT Taxi Joe...

Dan

I am assuming the writers will be revealed on the 27th? Once voting has finished.

I want to respond to some of the feedback mine received, and plan to do so this weekend - regardless of an official reveal. It won't matter once voting has closed anyway.

I reckon Last Cab for you, Dan, just based on some things you've let slip. I originally had you pegged for one of the gory ones.

I will say what I wrote after voting closes.  Not that anyone voted for mine, but, I will say that some of you got it right, while others got it wrong.

I actually think we should do this once the comments slow down.  Have one person put up clues about what they wrote.  It'd be fun to make a guess, kinda like Hangman OWC....

Don't be so sure - back in 2014 when I won, all the comments suggested the complete opposite to the final result, which came as a big surprise to me. There is the point that anyone can post feedback, but only the writers can vote, so the comments aren't always a clear guide.

According to the top of the page, it is now 2:15am on Saturday 27th August in the Good Old US of A, so I believe that voting has closed...

(Here in Britain it is 7:18am)

Good luck anyway.

36Celsius here and I'm so happy it came down a bit from last week. My morther doesnt believe its 36 though. Theres a law that permits to stay home and not go to work if its above 40 - so shes sure its all a big conspiracy to announce lower temperature for the people not to hold a grudge against their employer.

Bingo! The Room was something that became our ritual back in Cali, then hit the jackpot during the last midnight show when Wiseau showed up.

Jealous of what, Warren?

We don't have sex with each other and mainly because most of us have never seen each other.

I believe Pia met Dena though. Don't think others met.

Actually, there's quite a few members who have met IRL. More than you think...

Onto your other topic, Kham, you have to have seen the movie they're talking about.

Btw, was it me who steered this thread in the direction of the weather, while we await the Don's announcement?

Love your Ma's conspiracy theory, Kham. Classic.

Oh hi, Khamanna.  (okay I'll stop now:p)

It's a Tommy Wiseau movie quote.

I purposely didn't reference the post I was replying to because it's as random as the scene in the movie. I knew those that have watched it would get it.

The Room is a classic for sure - though maybe not for the right reasons.  Still, I guess it gives us all a little hope.  I think as a drinking game it works pretty well.

Khamanna, there’s a link to The Room script on the movie script home page - might want to check out a few pages before parting with your hard earned cash…
