... is this challenge in place of the usual Halloween OWC?  Meaning there won't be one?

I have no comment at this point in time.

Just to be clear I can write a horror story as long as it is inspired by the Night Gallery?

The same set-up: introducing paintings that deal with the story. And, it should be between 3 and 5 vignettes.

Long story short: write 3-5 short horror stories which feature an introduction and a painting that goes with them.

Can the stories be about anything? The only thing is that I have to write an introduction and a painting for every new one?

The stories can be about anything, so long as it's horror. And, yes, you need a new introduction and painting for each story.

Does the setup have to be exactly like the show or can it be a different interpretation that accomplishes the same thing? Specifically, do we have to break the fourth wall for the intros?

Same, but different is a fair approach. I called it the Night Gallery 7WC to put an image in your head, not to say that it should be recreated verbatim.

I like this challenge.
It's a compilation of 3-5 short horror stories.
Each about 20-25 pages long.
And they have a painting that sums up the story that we show at the beginning.

So now I have to come up with 3-5 short horror stories and think of a poster for each one.

Cool.

I even signed up for a free trial of Hulu to watch some episodes since I'm not familiar with the series.

The series isn't very good, nowhere near as good as The Twilight Zone was.

I like the challenge too. For me, the real challenge is time. I'm currently writing another film for a friend to shoot. I'm not sure I'll be able to do this too, but I'm inspired. I've already come up with the framing device and trying to decide if I should follow a theme or something else to link the stories together.

I’m going to give this a shot precisely because horror is well outside my comfort zone, but no promises that anyone else will ever get to see it if it turns out to be a steaming pile of poo.

Feature-length scripts:
Who Wants to Be a Princess? (Family)
Glass House (Horror anthology)

TV pilots:
"Kord" (Fantasy)
"Mal Suerte" (Superhero)

Additional scripts are listed here.
