What's you favorite horror sub-genre? What about your least favorite?

My favorite is the slasher sub-genre. Surprise!

My least favorite would probably be the exorcism sub-genre. Besides "The Exorcist", almost all other exorcism films suck.

What about you guys?

I would say psychological as my favorite and torture porn as my least, but then I liked both Saw and Hostel...

I'm also not a big fan of witches and supernatural, but I LOVE The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby and The Omen... I guess it comes down to how well it's all put together.

GREAT to see you back Zack!!! Between you and Ashlie, it almost feels like the old days!

Ah, I almost forgot torture porn. I also strongly dislike that sub-genre, while also being a hypocrite and believing Hostel is a masterpiece.

Feels good to be back.

I'm hip on the inter-dimensional crossover horror: Stranger Things, In the Mouth of Madness, From Beyond... and all things HP Lovecraft. Oh! Can't forget inbred backwoods horror.

I really can't say there's much horror I don't like.

I'm old school. Give me B-movie horror any day of the week! Sleepaway camp...all of them.

Then maybe Hitchcockian horror....thriller?

And American Psycho, of course.

And, sorry, but I admit I love 70's rape/revenge films. (WTH does that say about me....)

My least fav:

Gross-out horror:

The human centipede I will NOT WATCH!

Slither.....no.....bugs.....NO!

Hostel...depends on my mood.

AND NO PUPPET OR DOLL ANYTHING!

T.v. show. It was pretty popular.

Amazing Stories: This anthology series features unreal fantasy and horror stories a la "The Twilight Zone." Each short story was all-inclusive and many featured famous actors. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer of the show, which aired for two seasons on NBC.

Damn. How the hell have I never heard of this? I'll put it on my list of stuff to watch.

Another sub-genre I really enjoy is the haunted house one. I love me some haunted house movies.

It was weird, I remember that much. And there was another one that came on showtime...Dark Shadows or something....wait was that a soap opera?

True dat! A good old fashioned ghost story. Especially with kids.

Have you ever seen 'Dead Silence'? I foolishly went to see it with my friend and I didn't sleep for a week.

Ahh, I thought who's this Disco person? That's what happens with a change of avatar/pic.

My fav is psychological horror.

I enjoy being vicariously scared more than revolted.

And suspense and edge of the seat stuff where it messes with your head more than just gore for the sake of it. Slasher horror and torture porn not my thing but the Wolf Creek series impressed me with combining both.

Jacob's Ladder, It Follows, Oculus, Sixth Sense, Don't Look Now, and some of Polanski's stuff, not least his version of Macbeth. And who can forget Lynch with Eraserhead.

I'm with you on The Exorcist, no exorcism movie comes close IMHO, and it combines true horror with psychological.

I think Brian De Palma's film Blowout is terrific too, not strictly horror, but it is really...

Cosmic horror such as H P Lovecraft.

The modern master of it is a guy called Mark Samuels.

The best stories for me have a spiritual dimension.  Stories that deal strictly with Materialism are too thin for me.  They feel a bit autistic.  I like stories where there's something hiding just behind the thin facade of what we call reality.

Good thread.  Nice to see horror getting its due, as IMO, the horror industry has been killed by all the completely BS PG13 rated crap we're spoon fed again and again.

I love all horror, really, but I'd say my least favorites are haunted houses/ghosts and exorcism crap (not even really a fan of The Exorcist).

Favorites would be anything done well, as Pia said.  Hostel and Hostel 2 are 2 of my favorite movies, but over the top, cheap torture porn doesn't do all that much for me.

I like psychos and sickos and backwood nutjobs, slicing and dicing their way to dinner just fine, but there are just too many poor examples out there, although the original Wrong Turn is a truly great flick, while the sequels are some of the worst shit around.

Slasher flicks can and have been great, but yet again, they have also been done to death and are usually downright terrible.

I like me some creature horror for sure, be it real life creatures, or monster/alien creatures.  I even like fairy tale-type horror, done for scares.

Bottom line is I like me my horror, but just wish we could get some real horror that hits hard and take no prisoners.

Couldn't these be considered slashers? And Wrong Turn 2 was a fine sequel. After Part 2, well, yeah they are all shit.

I'm sure some would consider those to be slashers, but if we're breaking down to sub genre, I think there's a difference when you go all TCM or the like.

Wrong Turn 2 was decent, but pretty goofy .  The sequels that followed were just garbage and Declan O'Brien is a complete arsehole!!!

What an insidiously cruel question. The correct answer is obviously none. Why choose one flavor of ice cream when you can have them all?

But for the purposes of pure, frivolous fun...

My all-time favorite films seem to fall under body horror, so that one's certainly up there. The Neapolitan ice cream of horror subgenres. You get the psychological and the gore, not to mention some of the most memorable, often grotesque images in the game. Sadly unexplored but loaded with potential.

I probably like more films in the splatter genre than any other. There's definitely some overlap between splatter and body horror too, e.g. The Fly, Hellraiser. Splatter flicks also make the best movie nights/double features with lots of booze. Fucking party!

I love cosmic/Lovecraftian horror, which is probably my *current* fav. Thus far, it's more of a literary subgenre with very few (if any) films doing it justice. I'd like to see that change, but in the mean time, I'm happy to experience it on the page. I love the atmosphere and harrowing sense of dread and have become practically obsessed with its themes of the unknown and disintegration of reality/sanity. Horror with a nihilistic edge -- the best!

Least favorite subgenre is found-footage. Really more of a format than a genre, but it's become fused with horror to a point where I think calling it a subgenre is fair game. Anyway, haven't seen a single found-footage horror film that was worth revisiting, let alone anything beyond "good"/adequate. Cannibal Holocaust is barely watchable/not entirely found footage, I keep forgetting Man Bites Dog exists, and The Blair Witch Project is hollow, dated bullshit whose legacy has next to no value (these are supposed to be the pioneers and standard bearers of the genre). I can't tell if the format inherently ruins otherwise quality films or if the folks who gravitate towards found footage horror just coincidentally have bad taste every single time. Either way... shit sucks.

Dishonorable mention... I used to think exorcist films were the worst subgenre since there're only one and a half good ones: The Exorcist and *maybe* Exorcist III. Blair Witch ain't no Exorcist. I guess it's better than Exorcist: The Beginning...

Again, though, I couldn't pick a single subgenre. For every great film I could pick from one, there'd be a great film to match it from another. I tend to gravitate to darker fare, but sometimes the right exploitation trash just hits the spot. They all got their gems.

I do want to add that whatever the sub genre is, I despise horror films that don't take themselves seriously.

That's not to say that a horror film can't have some humor, but it has to be played for reals and not a joke or pisser.

If memory serves, Jeff, you didn't like Cabin in the Woods. While it's a horror-comedy, it is real for the characters in it, the same way Shaun of the Dead was. Kind of a fine line, I suppose...

Didn't really dig Zombieland. Not sure why, maybe I need to give it another chance.

Slither, Drag Me To Hell, and Cabin Fever, are all fun horror flicks.

Rob Zombie and his movies are eww. lol. Although I did enjoy the last two minutes of his newest flick, "31".

Not a big fan or horror to be honest. It's usually cliche and not scary. However I did enjoy Sinister (2012) with Ethan Hawk as it was more about the mental breakdown of a desperate man done well with some grinder style slasher scenes. It was really well down for what it was.

That said, I do have a great idea for a horror script kicking around in my head. I hated them so much I thought hwy not try and do my own?

I actually liked the "Black Christmas" remake. Bizarre horror film.

Somewhere in my collection of dusty VHS tapes is an un-opened copy "Salem's Lot". I've yet to watch it.

Indeed, I didn't care for The Blair Witch Project at all. I actually revisited it just a few months ago given the resurgence of hype over the years, especially on this board; I hadn't seen it since I was 12 or 13. I liked it then, definitely. I'd never seen anything like it, but then at that age, I'd never seen anything like... most things.

First off, it has a lot of the same issues I hate about most found-footage films. Jump scares. Lots of screaming, crying, heavy breathing, etc. over shaky cam/black. Lots of characters repeating the same lines over and over, whether it's someone's name or general freaking out over some "creepy" prop. Overall... loud, incoherent, and redundant with no real story or character progression other than characters dying/disappearing or new interchangeable props and/or monsters (if you're lucky enough to have actual monsters).

Am I exaggerating here? Doesn't seem like it. Apparently, the directors would have the actors camp overnight and either make random noises in the woods for them to react to or set up props outside their tents to have them ad-lib to the morning, then wash, rinse, repeat -- different noises, different props. Scary for a few minutes, maybe, but after that, it's just redundant. Maybe it's a smart approach if you don't wanna spend any money, but I don't see how you can stretch it out for 90 minutes -- not if these are the only tools in your toolbox.

In between are stupid/annoying characters wandering aimlessly through the woods and fighting with each other. I know it's supposed to feel realistic, and in a sense, it is, but it doesn't do much for me other than get on my nerves. Are we supposed to be interested in these characters, or is the novelty of "realistic" supposed to carry the film?

A lot of the documentary stuff at the beginning of the film, I can't tell if it's supposed to be a joke or not. If it is, it's brilliant and I'll give the filmmakers genuine props. Every time the girl narrates for the camera, she takes on this pretentious, faux-scholarly persona, like that's her idea of how a historian's supposed to talk. She doesn't talk like that for the rest of the film, so I assume she's putting on an act. It's kinda hilarious and a nice touch if intentional but doesn't do the character any favors in the likability department.

Overall, boring, silly, annoying, super dated, and so far hasn't inspired any films that are any good with its so-called legacy. Maybe Willow Creek. Willow Creek was a better film and it was directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. I mean, I like Bobcat, but honestly... how does that happen?

Sorry for the rant. I didn't plan to write one. I'm not above writing one, so not like I'm trying to save face here either. But yeah, really did nothing for me. People seem to love it, so I guess it's my loss that I don't.

Ligotti is very good.

For pure Cosmic horror I prefer Samuels.  Ligotti has never quite taken me to that place outside of reality,  but I do like him.

The man who collected Machen and the White hands and other tales are good places to start.

I'm a big Body Horror fan, love Cronenberg Tsukamoto and Yuzna/Gordon... and not a big fan of Action Horror, always seems to be more action than scares.

Found footage is also a pet hate, all that shaky cam shit gives me a headache... notable exceptions are Cannibal Holocaust, Blair Witch and first Paranormal Activity.

For me a surprise omission from people's lists is J Horror, I think there are some truly The Grudge, Ring, Dark Water, Audition - in fact anything from Takashi Miike.

There's been some very decent stuff to come out of Korea too, A Tale of Two Sisters, The Host, I Saw the Devil, Chaser, Train to Busan.

But I consider myself a Horror fan above all other genres and will happily give most things a go, at least first 10 mins

Zombieland, Cabin the Woods, and any of those supposedly smart and funny "horror" movies are awful, IMO.

I love found footage.

Noroi: The Curse, The Tunnel, Rec 1 and 2, Grave Encounters, The Conspiracy, Europa Report, The Banshee Chapter...I love it. So many amateur directors try it that it makes the genre as a whole relatively weak, but the good stuff is so immediate and so powerful. Fantastic.

I was just gonna say J horror is really great. 'The eye' not the jessica alba remake but the original.

Oh an Australian Grindhouse.

Ligotti is very good.

For pure Cosmic horror I prefer Samuels.  Ligotti has never quite taken me to that place outside of reality,  but I do like him.

The man who collected Machen and the White hands and other tales are good places to start.

Thanks, man.

On Ligotti, I can understand your point. I'm currently reading Songs of a Dreamer. The stories I've read so far seem to blur reality and fantasy rather than commit to one outright. Of course, the reader can choose to interpret them one way or the other, but the ambiguity seems to be the point.

Quoted from Scar Tissue Films
His books can be expensive,  by the way.

He doesn't release them widely.

They're only for the special people.

Seem to be available on Amazon at reasonable prices. I saw The White Hands hardcover going for quite a bit, but that seems like a collector's item. Limited releases, perhaps, but available.

Not a fan of J horror myself. I saw most of those films back when The Ring (2002) was released and shed some light of them for Western audiences. I enjoyed most of them, as I recall, but wasn't crazy about them and none of them stuck in my memory. I can't remember what happens in half of them.

Audition is a different animal IMO. I don't it fits into any particular box. Love it, though. One of my favorite films.

Love Miike and Sion Sono as well. I also don't think you can put either in a box. They're all over (and outside) the genre map. J horror strikes me as having very specific attributes.

Yep James, Miike has dabbled in most genre's and is impossible to put in any sort of box, same with Sono (loved Cold Fish)... and neither are J Horror - though I'd make a case for Audition.

J Horror, I think the initial difference of it, Ring, Grudge, Dark Water gave us a very different type of horror, which as you'd expect has been appropriated by Hollywood... so it's now as familiar as anything else ;-(

May have to go watch The Happiness of the Katakuris now

Yep!  A completely wild, crazy, shocking animal.

I only saw it once, but loved it...but also cringed at the good stuff and yawned through the slow stuff.  But, damn...when this beast strikes, it strikes hard and fast!

Great stuff!!!

I don't have much preference-but I dig slashers like the first Child's Play, Elm street, Friday the 13th #6.Candyman and Tourist Trap. But I like me some vampires. I like ghost stories....and I' a sucker for Nature Gone wild. Who doesn't love Jaws?

I tend to use hybrids in my writing. One such script has creature feature, body horror, slasher, horror comedy and splatterpunk all rolled into one.

Films that draw lines from holy books seem more interesting like Rosemary's baby, The Omen or The Exorcist. Recent horror movies just put a ghost or whatever entangled in CGI shots and loud sound, the very element of fear  which is the story behind the happenings or the emotional state of the victims is completely neglected.

Which horror movie cliche's bother you guys the most? For me it's the mirror jump scare. You know what I'm talking about.

A person looks into a mirror, nothing behind them. Then they open the medicine cabinet, and when they close it someone is in the mirror behind them. Cheapest jump scare ever.

Which cliche's do you guys hate? Any you actually like?

Hmm, I dunno, a lot of the horror cliches still work their magic on me.

Still, I'm a cheap drunk as well.

I don't know if it's a horror cliche as such, but I still fall for the guy/gal about to cross the road, something grabs their attention, they turn back and get bowled over by a semi. If done well, when they're set up so you really aren't expecting it, they always work a treat for me.

And a figure, glimpse of something that skitters down a dark hallway, or over a ceiling, ala Freddie, The Babadook, Japanese horror, always creeps me out,

I watched Trainspotting again the other night and that baby scene... Let's just say: hands over my eyes. That's horror of a different kind. Not a cliche, unless 'dead baby' is one.

I'm all for cliches if they're effectively done.

I don't think anyone can get away with: 'I'll be right back' anymore though.

Love the zombie truck, Pia.

I like most types of horror.  For this challenge i hope we stay away from things like splatter and other explicit types of stories because if that is the same for everyone then each story will basically be the same.  Something tears apart something (most likely human) and each person will go into explicit detail.

IMO not much fun or creativity will happen especially in a 10 page story.  I hope whatever genre we get or share will have some variance in the content.  10 pages aren't a lot.

I am excited about this challenge.  I just hope we don't have to do anything that delves into splatter, extreme gore, cannibalism, or the ilk.

Thanks
Dan

DanC, I hear ya'. I get it. And I think I have a cool solution.

Also, the scripts are to be 10-15 pages. At least 10, no more than 15.

Tomorrow night I'm going to do the draw. I'm going to draw two sub-genres from a hat, and allow the writers to chose between the two. Or if the writer would like, they can combine the two.

Remember people, this is not an anonymous challenge. Talk about your work. I'm not saying show each other your scripts, just talk about them. Share the title and the logline, stuff like that.

Here is the list of sub genres.

Slasher
Body Horror
Zombies
Monster
Psychological
Haunted House
Supernatural
Torture Porn
Found Footage
Nature Horror
Cosmic Horror
Gothic Horror
Comedy Horror
Witchcraft
Splatter
Cannibal
Erotic Horror
Giallo
Dark Fantasy
Science-Fiction Horror
J-Horror

Wouldn't it suck if the draw was Giallo and Found Footage! Lol This is gonna be fun.

Good luck.

When I was young I was into horror big style. I loved it all. I'd go to the video store and get the cheesiest, goriest looking horror flick I could find. If it had fit women in it and the prospect of nudity - bonus!

I got tired of the horror film genre though. It all started to seem tired and cliche. These days I prefer my horror intertwined with superb stories, acting and production values like Penny Dreadful, Walking Dead and American Horror Story. It's less about being afraid or grossed out now for me and more about enjoying a cracking tale that just happens to include horror elements. It seems that TV can explore horror in far more depth than movies.

If I do watch a horror film it's a fun film, like Zombieland. I don't go to the cinema to watch something that's just for scares. I need to be entertained in a much broader sense. I'm just fussy I guess.

Horror films need to try new things. The last horror film to really impress me in this manner was Cabin in the Woods.

I think that's true for most of us.  What teenage boy doesn't want to see naked chicks on the screen?  I was the same.  I saw "I dismember me" not for the story but because Samantha Fox was in it.  For those too young, she was the original bad girl that every boy wanted to be with.  I think her bid hit song was something like naughty girls need love too.

Oh, Zach, please don't give us two choices that are the same or that can't work together.  Re-pick if you have to.

And as I said elsewhere, thanks for not having us do the same story over and over because that'd get boring quickly.  Thanks also for staying away from the most obscure genres like vomit horror and the mutilation stuff like "Flowers of Flesh and Blood.". I don't think very many, if any, want to read anything that detailed or gross.

Dan

This is kind of a strange new element to challenges where you have to say you are in before you even know what the complete topic is. I kind of follow from an elbow distance. I'm working on other things, but if a topic hits me, I might enter for fun. For the recent OWC, I received comedy, and I wasn't really into doing a comedy. No big deal, I just stayed out. Is this the new thing though? For some reason you have to commit beforehand, and not everyone gets the same assignment? I'm not complaining, please don't think that. I respect however people want to run it. It has the effect of pushing me from elbow distance to arm's length though...so everyone misses out on my crappy scripts! Good luck though!

You guys have no idea how excited I am about this topic.  Most of the ideas trapped in my head fall into the horror umbrella somewhere.

I have my ideas for zombie (please let it be zombie because I have an idea that has never been done.

I also have my supernatural, SciFi, fantasy, slasher, monster, and mad scientist.

I actually gave myself a nightmare last night thinking about these stories.

The scariest thing is that most of these stories came from dreams or nightmares in the past.  If we ever get the chance to enter other people's dreams, I bet there won't be anyone wanting to enter mine.  Hell, Freddie Krueger would say it's too creepy for him.

Oh,did any of you know that Krueger is based on a real incident?  It was years ago.  These ex-prisoners all suffered from some sort of hallucination about a human-like creature with a green-like sweater and spikes for hands.  It was after each prisoner at night in their dreams.  They all described to a T this creature.  They said that they were experimented on and their minds were forced to go places it wasn't supposed to go.  They all died in their sleep, screaming for it to leave them alone.

Clive's relative worked in one of the labs and told the filmmaker their fate, and he went on to write Freddie.

Now, this might be the most interesting part.  There was a sleep study done about 2 years ago and one of the subjects claimed they had the ability to "go astral \ethereal" and that night the subject was shown by the instruments to have experienced some sort of phenomena that had never been captured on their equipment before.  The subject confirmed that they had indeed left their body, as they often did.  I saved that article somewhere.

So the question is: did the prisoners minds go somewhere that drew the attention of this creature that led to their deaths??? Pretty scary, isn't it?

Dan

I'm working on other things, but if a topic hits me, I might enter for fun. For the recent OWC, I received comedy, and I wasn't really into doing a comedy. No big deal, I just stayed out. Is this the new thing though? For some reason you have to commit beforehand, and not everyone gets the same assignment? I'm not complaining, please don't think that. I respect however people want to run it. It has the effect of pushing me from elbow distance to arm's length though...so everyone misses out on my crappy scripts! Good luck though!

What he said.

Well, I second that. Will read some though.

I just wanted people to let me know if they were participating so I would know. No real reason beyond that.

And everyone will receive the same two sub genres.

~Zack~

Sorry Zack this threw me at first. We will all get the same random sub genres? Won't that mean so many, say, zombie ones and another genre and nothing else? I was of the impression you would draw out random for the list and we get a choice from the 2.

I'm 30,000 words into a novel. And I'm in the early stages of a biopic script that I'm thinking of entering in Nicholl's. So I don't want to commit to challenges...but I do have fun with them. So basically I like to see the topic, and if an idea hits me, run with it.

But seriously, I'm not upset about it, just giving feedback. You're doing great, Zack! Building anticipation is important. You're an asset to the site, good luck!

I'm drawing two random sub-genres, of which you may chose from. If you like, you can combine the two sub-genres.

And to those who don't like that they have to commit before the sub-genre, I suppose I understand your complaints. If I ever get a chance to do another one of these I will drop that stipulation. For this one, if you are interested in joining just PM me. If you don't like either of the sub-genres I draw, there is no penalty for backing out.

In January, this obligation to register was new and I didn't like it even then… let's see what it will be in April.

Back in the days, I found and joined simplyscripts only because of its openness of the OWC.

Whatever, have fun :-)

Can't get more reasonable than that.

If you send Zack a pm that you will take part, he won't hold you to it and demand you participate. So, what's the loss? You're not going to get some kind of penalty if you don't write something.

I told Sean I was taking part in the Jan OWC, but TOO much stuff was going on in my life at once, so I was not able to. I sent Zack a pm telling him I'm game, but I still have a LOT going on, including a granddaughter due any minute, so who knows...

C'mon people. Zack is doing the SS community a favor here.

I'm weirdly excited for this considering 'horror' was never my thang. But this seems cool and it can't hurt to get out of one's comfort zone.

If anything it will show if we as writers can REALLY roll with the punches in the writers room.

I actually think I'm the only one rooting for Giallo and torture porn.

Oh well.

Good on Cactus Disco!!!

I do agree with my old mate, Stevie, though, in that if it's...let's say zombie, an awful lot of zombie scripts will be painful, at best.

Wish it was random for each person who is in, with a choice of two, or a combination of two.  That would make for alot of great rads and a tough challenge.

I'm in, either way.

Happy Valentine's Day to all you Valentines out there!!!
