Hi everyone,

I have a question for people who have sent their short scripts to horror screenwriting contests (or screenwriting contests that accept horror scripts) in the present or the past.

Which contests would you recommend entering a fellow writer? And why?
For feedback, because they help expose your work, etc.

I have one or two in mind but I would like to know what you think before making any decision.

Thanks in advance!

Shriekfest! - https://www.shriekfest.com/

Highly recommended! Great communication throughout. You get informed at each stage how your script is doing. If you get in the finals, not only do you get invited to the live festival in LA (sadly I couldn't go as I couldn't afford the airfare, but I know someone who has and says it is great)  you also get an interview on their radio show in which they pitch you and your work. I was in the finals last year and I've had several referrals since from it. A day after my radio interview was aired, I got a script optioned.

This is 100% better than other horror festivals I've been a finalist in, like 13Horror.com, where I was just mentioned on their website, you have to keep checking a Facebook page for the results, the emails were almost non-existent and no follow-on referrals.

Mark, did that radio interview only apply to features at Shriekfest? I made the finals in 2013 for a short but didn't get anything out of it. Not even a certificate. I agree, communication was great and Denise (the founder) is wonderful, but placing in the Top 10 didn't really do much for me other than give me some bragging rights.

They must have changed it since then, now if you get into the finals with anything, they invite you for an interview.

Mine was for a short script, well two actually, I got two shorts scripts in the finals but didn't win.

Also, to add since the finals I've been referred to two producers looking for horror features from any of the 2017 Shriekfest finalists but I didn't have anything suitable.

I won in the Short Horror/Thriller category at Nashville film fest a couple of years ago, the script has been produced now and will be returning to Nashville in competition as a short film...

I like Nashville as a comp as there are multiple script categories, it's reasonably priced, finalists get festival tickets (like Mark I couldn't attend) and the winner gets $250 plus a nice winners certificate.

I might be biased though as I've won with two different scripts in different years

Hey Mark, Anthony,

I will definitely take a look at Shriekfest and Nashville.

Especially at Shriekfest since it was already in my mind and Mark's experience with the contest was great. Mark, you have made a good point.

I didn't know Nashville Film Fest had multiple script categories. Reasonably priced? It's definitely worth to look.

Mark, Anthony, just out of curiosity, which were your winner scripts? They're available anywhere so I can give them a read?

Thanks for the replies! Hopefully they will be of help to others as well.

David

My Horror winner was Glitch - https://dl.orangedox.com/sHbu2tKpLRpNA0v2V8

The other one isn't online at the request of the buyer, was called A Certain Romance...

I was also unaware Nashville included a short script category. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up Anthony.

As for the two script that got into the finals, they can be read here:

Seek - https://www.dropbox.com/s/3k4skgfodkjk9uw/Seek.pdf?dl=0

The Enchanted Quill - https://www.dropbox.com/s/9bysbrqetr6qqib/The%20Enchanted%20Quill.pdf?dl=0

Just a note - both of these were the result of a One Week Challenge on these very forums!

Thanks for sharing, Mark.

OWC entries wow!

I've just read Seek and it's an original twist on Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with some horrific elements.

The Enchanted Quill is next in line.

Thanks Anthony!

I'll read Glitch and wait to watch "A Certain Romance" on the screen

@ Mark... Nashville don't just have one short script category, they have several. Which I always think is better as your Horror script doesn't end up competing with a bunch of well-meaning drama's

The 2018 short script categories were

Comedy
Drama
Thriller
Tennessee
Young Screenwriter
Genre Short (Action/Adventure, Family, Animation, Historical, Inspirational, Music-Inspired, Science Fiction)

The last categories used to be split out into their own, but they keep changing it every year.

Earlybird deadline is usually end of July, entrance fee up to that point is only $20... and entry window is about to open for 2019 festival.

I wasn't planning on entering any comps this year but I might just have another dabble and see if I can make it 3 out of 3
