Only one week left to the traditional July OWC!

I hope those of you who are not on vacation and such will take part. You will need to bring your A-game though. Over the years, the OWC scripts have really increased in quality and many have been re-written into features that have sold and kicked ass in some of the biggest competitions. Dena and Khamanna to name a few.

I'm going to leave one hint...

The July 2018 OWC will be announced next Friday.

Another hint... it's cold in Oz.

Is it your second hint? I missed the first one.

Cold in Oz... cold in Oz. freezing cold? Freezer. Refrigerator. Now, the refrigerator brings all sorts of trouble. The hint is too broad!

In the theme of Wicked (relating to Oz, I believe) do we have to write our own musical??? If so I'll call first on Scooby Do the Musical...a tale of addiction, hallucination and rehab post 60s.

That or Jeff Goes to Vegas and the Search for the Treskilling Yellow. There's a musical number there about why the Penny Black is overrated

If you're doing Nightmare, I've got dibs on Friday the 13th. I can picture it now. Jason slaughtering teens while his dear old mommy sings 60's hits to him.

I’m with Cam on musical, cold in Oz could be a reference to Frozen and The Wizard of Oz. The other clue I have no idea how they fit in, but maybe Shh is reference to a Quiet Place, so we have to do a musical...with no actual singing....interpretative dance musical! Genius!

I'm hoping this OWC steers clear of all this. I hope the Oz hint has nothing to do the Wizard of Oz. Give us something straightforward we can be serious about. To me, it's very tiresome to read scripts by people trying to be more clever than the next guy.

Oz could be The Wizard of Oz, Australia, Ozzy Osbourne, Ozzie and Harriet, or HBO's 90s prison drama, Oz.

Cold could be literally cold or it could be cruel or heartless... which could be a reference to the Tin Man, who wants a heart.

Shh... makes me think of A Quiet Place.

I've got it! The theme is Ozzy loses his voice and needs to tell Sharon to turn on the furnace.

Feature-length scripts:
Who Wants to Be a Princess? (Family)
Glass House (Horror anthology)

TV pilots:

Perhaps its set on Arrakis, which is virtually indistinguishable from the interior of Australia. There aren't two many faith-based films that feature the Orange Catholic Bible.

Boy, you’ve all had some good guesses at this.

If I recall, no one has ever got close to getting this right ... so my prediction is that ... you will be miles off

I haven’t been around much in recent times, and haven’t written in a long while, but if the parameters are not way too narrow etc it may be time to dust down that key board. Hopefully my software works and I can remember the protocols - they get picked up in a OWC!

Actually narrow is not always that bad,  an example being it had to be set in an elevator proved to be creative, as did the character in a wheelchair, just don’t go too off the wall. Something that can allow different characters, different voices, places etc

One final thing, since I last wrote anything my daughter has started to be interested in writing - it would be a curious thing for me to introduce her to this world.

All the best, and glad to see SS is going well.

Regards

Bill

Boy, you’ve all had some good guesses at this.

If I recall, no one has ever got close to getting this right ... so my prediction is that ... you will be miles off

Good to hear from you, Bill!

My daughter always wants to help with my writing. She tries to tell me dialogue, tries to get my characters to do something...it's adorable, except for the whole trying to focus and write thing.

She's started writing her own stories though, since before she was 8.

I’m guessing it’s something to do with global warming, perhaps when all the animals and food die out.  Some sort of sci-fi alternative future.

Yes, it’s interesting introducing my child to all this. I feel she will be a much better writer than me, but I can still guide her. That’s probably the best I can do.

By the way, your signature is missing some great scripts you wrote around here - was one of yours the ‘last stop’. I remember that one. Quality work.

I'm pretty sure it's about botox.
Shh - you do botox but never tell
Cold - botox likes cold
Not anime - botox again!

Osbourne, you say? I don't know, Mark. Could be Mickey Rourke, too.

There's a bomb under the table. Hmm, that's how Hitchcock always described his approach to suspense. Interesting.

As for introducing children to writing,  well inspired by my writing, my 8 year old daughter decided she too wanted to write. I gave her an old laptop and off she went. Her first creation is a My Little Pony story. What horrors have I unleashed?

Alas, there isn't room in the signature field for all the links. Those three are polished shorts, the early OWCs are from my "deep cuts" selection.

The Last Stop is one of my faves. It would be crazy expensive to produce, but still worth polishing as a sample. Thanks for that thought!

A suspense filled, mystical, fantastic, but also realistic and gritty OWC. Sounds like a good time to finally write my SexBots script.

Btw, Inuit people are indigenous to Northern Canada, Greenland, Alaska. Not Australia. Using the word Aboriginal would be different. Here endeth the lesson, and bring on the Reveal.

Yes, Aborigines in Australia wouldn’t be called Aboriginal-Australian. An Inuk-Australian would be an immigrant or child of immigrants, speak with a bit of a funny accent, and probably carry a larger knife than otherwise expected.

(FYI this joke has now officially been flogged to death...)

Well, given the fact I'm the only one to ever include Danny DeVito in a OWC   ( http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-1016OWC/m-1476551732/s-new/ ) I've surely got to win this one...any sign of Frankie Muniz???

Well Kham is right. I saw it but skipped over the fact Danny and Michael do share screentime in Mars Attacks.
I have no idea what Kham's obsession with Botox is though.

I hope so too. You have helped out this site so much over the years it deserves to be be rewarded. I haven’t been around much, and my heart is elsewhere re writing, but I like to pop back every now and them

However, re topic etc,  as I now consider myself to be  a non writer I hope that the criteria are accessible.

I also have this wish, not shared by others I accept, that we would have the chance of writing an affordable to film script so that this May interest film makers etc That’s an exciting part of this stuff..

Ok, I wil wake up, read and see

I may not have writen for a long time , but I hope it is fired up again

But, whatever, thanks Don, Pia, I do appreciate the chance.

And no, we'll see today, around midday.
