I was only thinking the other day about my OWC scripts and how they hadn't got much attention, production-wise. It then occurred to me that I hadn't even uploaded them to the shorts section here, nor had I done anything with them at all really. Then I get this email, and I remember sending one of them off to this short script competition - free to enter, of course. I wrote it a couple of Halloweens ago, the OWC where we had to write about a portal. I wrote a no dialogue piece called Impropriety, using a 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' theme.
It was well received but I didn't win a mug. So, I figured I'd give these festival comps a go, having never done so before.. and lo and behold, I've made it to the semi final. I notice Mark Renshaw is also in there. If I don't win then I hope that he does. The winning script will be produced.
Great news, best of luck to the both of you. Now if I may hijack this thread a moment, where do people keep finding these free competitions? Is there any site where you can search a database of competitions for "free" listings? So far, all I've found is moviebytes.com and they don't have much of anything to choose from.
Make an account and run a search. You don't get many options for free. But if you're prepared to part with small amounts of cash, there are others for $10, etc.
Anything interest I see I usually post over here too (as do a few others).
Free comps are few and far between, and free comps worth entering... well V rare... but there was a free to enter feature comp at Xmas who's prize was production (modesty prevents me from saying who came 2nd in it), Scriptshadow had a free to enter feature comp that the winner got a $5000 option etc... so there are a few out there each year.
Cool, yeah, I figured they were rare. But I didn't know about filmfreeway and I completely forgot about withoutabox. Thanks for this, I'll be sure and check them out. And I'll be sure to pay more attention to the contest posts here.
