This was OK. I just got it because I wanted to after just reading it a few months ago. I suppose because it was made in the 80's they had to limit what they could use, but I found that they made the story very childish. The score for the film s*cked really bad. They had drums and stuff! Goodness, who would add rock drums to a fantasy film? A dufus...anyway, if you area a rock steady fan of The Hobbit, see if they have it on DVD at Blockbuster...if you've never read the books...stay AWAY!!!!!

A musical cartoon of The Hobbit childish? No....   And in 1978? When cartoons were actually made for children, and not to entertain adults as well? What a crazy thought.

My friend was on a LOTR kick and she bought this; I think she lost her mind listening to the songs.

I'm not really an adult, and Walt Disney said that he didn't make cartoons for children...he made them for the child in all of us. lol.

Anyway, the "Lord of the Rings" cartoon wasn't as child like as this was, and it was made first.

Either way, they were both bad adaptations and I hated the music in this film. I can't wait until the live-action one by Peter Jackson comes out! I've read a lot about it and it doesn't look like it'll be anytime soon.

I found the Hobbit to actually be a decent adaptation for what it was worth. It has several sequences in it that I don't find suitable for young children, such as the large battle sequence near the end, the rather large spiders, and a lot of the film would really be lost on them. I think that it being the only adapatation of that book, it did fairly well.

You watch enough adult movies, don't you? And by adult, I don't mean pornography.

I haven't watched the movie but I could tell I didn't really want to. The animation looked kind of weird-- not what I was expecting.

Actually, on the Disney comment, if you watch his early films such as Snow White, Fantasia, you'll find that they aren't entirely child oriented. Dumbo, for example had both smoking and drunkeness in it. Fantasia had nudity. Snow White had the witch mocking a skeleton who died of thirst and Snow White's romp thru the forest wasn't exactly light-hearted.

Actually, a lot of the older cartoons weren't for kids.  Originally, Popeye lost his eye in WWI.  Casper became a friendly ghost after hois parents drowned him.
