Meet The Feebles is Peter Jackson's second movie following Bad Taste. The movie is acted out entirely by Muppet-esque puppets.
Meet The Feebles lacks a consistent singular storyline. Instead, it consists of several storylines all tied to one event: a live presentation of the Feebles Variety Hour television show. The main storyline seems to be that of Blech the Walrus, the show's producer, who attempts to balance managing the show with hiding from his supposed lover, Heidi the Hippo, star of the show, that he is sleeping with another woman... err... cat (?). Other storylines include an aspiring actor (a muskrat?) trying to break into show business and both falling in love and encountering corruption along the way as well as an STD-infected rabbit host trying to hide his disease from a muckraking fly journalist.
I feel utterly ashamed that I haven't already seen this movie. It's absolutely brilliant. There's some great slapstick in it as well as some all around clever gags (including a group of Vietcong squirrels trying to teach some captured lizard soldiers that "Lyndon Johnson is a very bad egg") but for the most part, the humor is very, very dark and probably only funny due to the fact that's it's acted out by squeaky-voiced animal puppets. Meet The Feebles is extremely unpolitically correct and makes Team America look like Sesame Street in dealing with such themes as racism, drug addiction/dealing, the porno industry, bizarre fetishes, and the corruption of the television industry and the media, all of which is played out in the most over-the-top fashion. Fortunately, I have a taste for dark humor. Also, Meet The Feebles is a really messy movie. Pretty much every bodily fluid you can think of is spilled and by the gallons.
All in all, Meet The Feebles is a hilarious and brilliant movie. I'm already having trouble deciding whether or not Bad Taste or this is his best work. I'd recommend it but it's not at all for the faint of heart. However if you feel up to it, I'd say, without question, give it a watch.
Boy -- does this one sound like it could go either way.....
You make it sound pretty good, though, James -- I'm gonna toss this title into my Netflix que -- 'cause I actually liked the horrible puppet work for that Devil Rat (or whatever the heck it was) in "Dead Alive".
But if this film completely sucks I am going to return to this thread to mock you and discredit your taste in movies.
You can also check out "Let My Puppets Come", the 'puppet porn' flick, which is considered by some to be the precursor, and is directed by Gerard "Deepthroat" Damiano. It's not great, but it does have a few laughs here and there and it's certainly different. Also, it's got music by Alan Silvestri, of all people. I own it!
