I remember when this came out but wasn't very interested in seeing it, and quickly forgot about it completely.

DirecTV had a free STARZ weekend preview, and I DVR'd this, and my girlfriend and I watched it over the weekend.

We were both very impressed.

It's very interesting, first of all, as we didn't really know all that much about JP Getty's life...and what a total arsehole he was.

It's also rather exciting in parts.  As a whole, it works exactly as intended with strong performances throughout.

I'm a little surprised at the low BO, especially considering it's a Ridley Scott film with big star power, and a globe trotting structure with some great set pieces.  Rotten Tomatoes got it right with a nice 78% approval, and this really should have appealed to the masses.

It was kinda just there for me. Meh.

Reasons why I don't think this movie made money.

- Period pieces usually aren't BO friendly. Especially these types, mid-20 century.
- An unpopular topic. A case people are rarely familiar with.
- It's a crime-drama-thriller. Something that would appeal to a more mature audience, a demo that doesn't frequent the cinema as much.
- From the marketing, it appeared as the movie was a long, drawn-out drama. Which it was.
- No actors to appeal to young audiences.
- Seemed like something that would be better as a mini TV-series than a movie. Which coincidentally was done, at the same time (Trust 201.

It was decent imho, if a little drawn out. Not something I'd say 'oh, you have to see this!'

I don't think the film ever fully recovered from the recasting of Plummer in what was originally Spacey's part as JP Getty.

Apparently, scenes were being reshot just a month out from release.

I think that helped it. It had the name of the movie out there. Free press. I'm sure a lot of people that had never heard of the movie, heard of it because of the controversy. Plummer got an Oscar nomination.
