are you putting your back against the wall right out of the gate if your idea is a mix of two movies that didn't do well at the box office?  Ever watch a movie and think, this would be really cool if it had this and this?  So you essentially mesh to movies unlike eachother into one.

You always see stuff like "It's Die Hard meets Forrest Gump."  2 smash hits, and then id wager to bet when you read it, it pales in comparison to both of them.

If the approach is "I think these two were great ideas that didn't quite come together, and I believe there's a hit here." the wrong one?  waste of time?

I'd list my "work" here, but I don't know how to hyperlink.

"Career" Highlights
-2, count em, 2 credits on my IMDB page.
-One time a fairly prominent producer e-mailed me back.
-I have made more than $1000 with my writing!
-I've won 2 mugs... and a thong.  (polaroids of me in thong available for $10 through PM)

I'm a big believer in not anticipating the marketplace, as it changes so frequently.  If you have a unique take on a story, or a combination of two stories, that you are passionate about, write it.

Hmm, I'm not too sure about that one. You have to consider that there are a lot of contributing factors to why a movie flops at the box office, ranging from the starring celebrity going and pooping in the street and saying they hate old people to just bad marketing. I think there would always be potential blending two movies that flopped because it doesn't mean they are necessarily bad ideas they just didn't preform and again that could be because another Twilight film came out the same weekend. I don't think it's a waste of time at all, I'm sure even if you are blending notions from two movies, the work is still original, but you gotta have faith in it!

I would never even say "it's _______ meets _______" unless provoked anyway.  Thanks for your thoughts

In one of Joe Esterhaz's books he talks about a guy who in the 80's or 90's (when Bruckheimer & Simpson were pumping out 'high concept') who sat down with the main idea's of many films on cards and mixed them around on a table. After pitching various mash-ups to the studio's he made millions. (I'd take anything big Joe says with a pinch of salt, mind).

Die Hard on a boat = Under Siege. Top Gun with cars = Days of Thunder. Rocky with a microphone = 8 mile. That kinda stuff.

If it works, it works...even if the two movies were bad. But like anything, a crappy movie is crappy for many reasons. A good movie is a good movie for many reasons. The approach to the script doesn't always have any bearing on that. Even if the script was killer or crappy.

I have absolutely no idea what I am talking about...

Conz, do what you like.
