This is one of the few scripts I have read that maintains the full personality of the film. It's both funny and moving, everything a romantic comedy (even one this unconventional) should aim for.

Tom is a hopeless romantic working for a greeting card company and Summer is a cold girl doesn't believe in love. The film chronicles their relationship in a non-linear order over the course of 500 days. This non-linear approach is reminiscent of "Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind", my second favorite film of the decade (behind Mulholland Dr.).

Tom is a character whom all guys should be able to relate to. He believes that he will never be happy until he finds "the one". However, Summer is not "the one". Tom seems to view Summer as an idea more that as a person and this comes off even more than in the film. Their relationship is doomed from the start. That's what makes it so engaging.

The script contains a large number of scenes that couldn't be found in either the film or the deleted scenes. And for the most part, the cutting of these scenes was justified. Some of them stuck out and didn't fit in the overall scheme of the story. Some were just saying the same thing over again. One very noticeable change was the insertion of a fantastic split-screen sequence in the film replacing a rather dull scene in the script.

Overall, this script is definitely one of the most engaging I have read, and is a fascinating study in the distance between script and film.

Haven't read the script yet, but the movie is one of the best I've seen this year. A fantastic dramedy; moving, funny, heartwarming.

Also, I loved the non-linear way the story was told.
