Refraction (was Something Old) by John Newman - Horror - Everything Daniel Bantree believes about his life and tragic childhood begins to crumble when he is forced to kill in self-defence. 120 pages - pdf, format
Is evil a force, something that slides in and out of time, above, beyond, and distinct from the terrible things that people do? For Daniel Bantree the answer is yes. As a six-year-old-child Daniel stumbled upon his Mother’s brutal rape and slaying, and watched his incorrigibly insane Father committed to a lunatic asylum. Forty years later Daniel tries to call it coincidence that he lives in his parents’ old house and works at the same factory that his Father did; most people, however, would say that Daniel is irresistibly drawn toward the very vortex of evil that he claims to have spent his life trying to escape. When Daniel is forced to kill in self-defense he opens the door to something bad…something old. Events begin to pile one on top of the other threatening to push Daniel to the edge of madness and beyond. Daniel’s Father wakes from a forty-year catatonic slumber, and leaves no doubt that he is an instrument of evil. The pretty upstairs neighbor whom Daniel had attempted to save from an abusive relationship rejects him and then disappears leaving only a crime scene awash in blood. Finally, there is the mysterious old lady who takes up residence in the apartment across the hall; but whether she exists anywhere but in Daniel’s own mind is a question he is afraid to ask. As the story unfolds the question must be asked: how much of evil is without and how much within?
Have posted a revised version of this script; the revisions were at the request of a Producer who is trying to raise the money to begin shooting. Would like to get feedback from fellow writers.
