Don, I'm not sure whether it's worth the trouble or how easy it might be, but could there potentially be a board that might be characterized as "Family" or "Family Friendly?" Something to that effect?  I know I see so many requests from newsletters or posting sites looking for family-friendly scripts.  You know, the type of stuff you might find on a made for TV-movie channel like Hallmark or elsewhere.

I know a lot of people on this site may not write that type of script, so there might not be a ton of content for it, but rather than a producer having to dig through a ton of comedies or dramas to find what might be pertinent to them, it might help narrow the search somewhat.  There's a big demand out there from producers for low-budget family fare.  Just a thought.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary,

Until I can get the search working correctly, I'd have to do this as a primary genre, e.g,

Family Friendly, Drama
Family Friendly, Sci Fi

If you has to pick which primary genre for your script, would you (and others) prefer Family Friendly as the primary category?  And would you consider Family Friendly to also include Faith Based?

My two cents...

I think Family Friendly would be fine as the main category... but personally I see Faith Based as a different category.

I agree that Family or Family Friendly would be the main category, and then I think anything that is family friendly could fall under that, whether comedy, drama, faith-based, etc.

I think if a producer was looking for something PG-rated, that would allow them to zoom right into what they were looking for.  Just given the size of the market for that type of material, it might be worth looking into.

I think that is a good suggestion.  Any other thoughts?

I think Romantic Comedy ought to have it's own section or at least a separate section under comedy.

I would also like a "Dramady" category.

Maybe both of the above could be sub categories under comedy.

Dave, et. al.,

Looking back, I've had a lot of submissions for Rom Com and Dramedy, so it makes sense to add as a top level. I hear the call for Family Friendly.  I will add them after the OWC closes.

At this point in time, I can only do one 'bucket' so while I could have RomCom and Dramady as subboards of comedy, they wouldn't roll up to comedy. iow, at this point in time, if one were to submit as Rom Com.  It would only appear on the Rom Com board and Rom Com page.

So, discussion board wise, we'd have

Comedy
Dramedy *doesn't roll up to comedy, you wouldn't see it in the comedy thread
Romantic Comedy *doesn't roll up to comedy, you wouldn't see it in the comedy thread
Family Friendly

Do we want to try "Faith Based"?  I don't think we'd get a lot.

I think Faith Based would fall under Family, as well.

Faith based would be good, as well. Might as well go for the whole bag.

A family category is an excellent idea. I'd definitely try to incorporate it. Personally, I prefer the descriptor "family" to "family friendly."

Faith-based is too specific IMO, and indeed I don't think it would garner enough entries to justify its existence. I can appreciate the idea of romantic comedy as its own genre (and, to a slightly lesser extent, dramedy), but I also think both are too specific and ultimately open the floodgates for all other hybrids. Which ones do and don't you give their own designated categories? That strikes me as a rabbit hole that goes on for a long, long time.

James and everyone,

Thanks everyone for insight.  I agree that Faith based is a little too specific and genre slicing and be a rabbit hole.  I've checked the sub genres folks have used and these are the numbers:

Dramedy  100
Romantic Comedy 349
Family 86

I kinda think that justifies splitting them out.  I hold it to those three.  Also, I'll be splitting up the shorts by genre, tho not on the boards just yet.

I’m slightly confused by the site redesign.

At the moment there are two short horror threads, one stand alone one in the unproduced threads and one in the new short scripts thread.

Is that a mistake, or will certain horror shorts go to one and not another for any particular reason?

Also does this now mean the old short scripts thread is no longer in use, as far as adding more shorts? Will everything be subdivided?

Pay no attention to the Fat Little Man behind the screen...  Move along.  Nothing to see here.
