The next one might be a prequel set in 2010, a time when nuclear war threatens to destroy the world.

This particular rumor was found in the buzz bin at Movies dot com.

Wrong.  The next one is an epic about a war against the Romulans which takes place between Archer's time and Kirk's time.

Hmm, can you tell me where I could find details about that? I have heard several things regarding a sequel. Its getting hard to differentiate between a trekkies’ wishes and actual fact. I have even heard that a trilogy is in the works which would show when Kirk, Spok, and Bones meet at Starfleet Academy.

If it sounds like a 'really really cool story' or involves any of the female characters taking their clothes off and getting into the lovepile, it's probably a trekkie's wish.

That sounds good, though I doubt that Spock met Kirk and McCoy at Starfleet.  He was already serving on the Enterprise under Pike.

Perhaps their first mission together.  Obviously, you'd need to recast everyone.

True, but this would not be the first time Rick Berman changes Star Trek history around to suit his needs. “Enterprise” was riddled with discrepancies when it came to the Star Trek timeline.

No more Star Trek, please.

I'm a fan, don't get me wrong, but Voyager annoyed me and Enterprise was a good idea that went horribly wrong, IMHO.

Let me live with my precious memories and reruns of the original series, TNG, and DS9.

The problem with these Star Trek movies began when the movies went from big changes to episodes, most notably from ST IV to V. That was when the disillusionment began. VI did a good job trying to pull us out of that slump with VII (Generations) merging the worlds together. Then we got First Contact and Insurrection, two big screen "episodes" of TNG. Fans were delighted, but that's it. Nemesis tried to pul it back with blowing up the Enterprise again (people seemed to love that: III, Generations), but the disillusionment was in full effect. XI will have to be an amazing film to turn on a lost generation of Star Trek movie goers.

I had great hope for Voyager, but the show didn't come close to reaching potential.  It seemed that the ship was always fully stocked and in great shape and the crew was never too depressed.

There was a two part story about a race of people that played with the time-space continuum.  The race's leader was trying to bring his wife back to life by preventing her death.  In this story, Voyager was in beaten up shape and a lot of crewmen died.  This situation could've lasted for a season or two, but the show took tyhe easy way out and the show lost out on a good story line.

I grew up watching TOS, but I haven't seen an episode in forever. I remember the Trouble With Tribbles being an especial favorite. I also remember A Piece of the Action where they left a commuicator on the people's desk at the end. Oops...

Look up 'Trials and Tribblations,' on Deep Space 9.  The crew goes back through time and get caught up in 'Trouble with Tribbles.'  It was filmed a la Forrest Gump and was hysterical.

I'm sure they'd have done a good job with it -- such as Enterprise's spectacular job with the "Expanse" -- and I agree that the series would have been more realistic, and would have had more episodes with true heroes and pioneers, had they struggled a LOT more; however, by compressing that story into a couple episodes, they allowed themselves many time-slots for many other unique stories.  I like how it all turned out.

Shame they never made a movie out of Star Trek: Voyager...

"...this is not a traditional captain and crew of a starship story in the least."

I don't know how I feel about that..I appreciate the change..but..it might not feel like much of a Star Trek movie if it's like that.  Then again, Nemesis didn't feel like much of a Star Trek movie either, and Insurrection, while it had high points, was little but an extended episode.

As for a movie set in Starfleet academy, I think that'd be great..but I wouldn't want to see anyone other than Shatner play Kirk, so I say make it a prequel to Next Generation instead, or something.

..noone else should play Kirk though.
Posted by: George Willson, August 27th, 2005, 2:38pm; Reply: 18
What the draft sounds like is an actual movie type script as opposed to an extended episode. A movie script usually has ONE main character and supporting characters to help out. Two hours is not enough time to become fully acquainted with a starship crew such as a series would tend to do. One character following one story? Sounds great.

Of course, what we may be in for is this movie that becomes the "pilot" for yet another Star Trek series. I'm Gene Roddenberry is rolling in his grave over just how spun out his little idea has gotten. Paramount is certainly milking it for all its worth. I'm sure everyone loves the potential, but you've gotta stop sometime. I'm just grateful the Bond franchise has stuck to their movies only, and not got all messed around like this.

star trek is great.
...but...

they made it clear when they ended Enterprise, i thought, that Star Trek was only good for so many different plots and variables of plots....
so then eventually you'd be stuck with things similar from other series...

i don't know about that.

but i think the more you try to 'star trek', the more you butcher a great mythology.

...case in point, some of the Enterprise episodes, and Nemesis (because some jerk who'd never even watched star trek decided that it would be cool to direct)

They've obviously got several options for stories they can cover.  I only wish they had a series running so that they could cover it all.  Why don't they just make a new series called STAR TREK: FEDERATION -- or something like that -- and tell a different story within the Star Trek universe each week?

... because y'know Kelsey Grammar had a commanding presence in that one episode of ST:TNG when he played the captain of a starship -- I'd love to see the further adventures of Kelsey Grammar's ship.  Could be fun!

Actually Diane Carey wrote a Next Generation book regarding Grammar's character, Morgon Bateson. He helped construct the current Enterprise. The book ended with Bateson facing down the Borg during the events of "First Contact" in his new ship.

Well, now it's time to put my inner geek away again.

I really don't see this doing much of anything at the box office.  "Nemesis" opened well with $20 million then quickly faded away.  Maybe we're all getting tired of Star Trek, who knows.  But on the other hand, Nemesis wasn't a bad film at all.  So whatever.

AND CURSE THE CONCEPT OF NEMESIS BEING ANYMORE THAN AWFUL!!!

no offence.  i just didn't like it at all.  if data dies, there's no way i'm going to like it, lets face facts.  and now that the Borg have been somewhat remedied with Voyagers little gift of transphasic torpedoes.... i'm curious to see if and when Hue will ever come back.

J.J. Abrams is officially directing.

Quoted Text
After months of speculation on the internet, it has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that J.J. Abrams, the creator of the hit ABC dramas "Lost" and "Alias," will indeed be directing the first movie in Paramount Pictures' relaunch of Gene Rodenberry's Star Trek movie franchise.

The 11th installment of the series will actually be a prequel to the original television series and the first movie, as it chronicles the first meeting of a young James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock at Starfleet Academy and their first space mission.

Although Abrams had been committed to produce the movie for a number of months, it was finally confirmed that he would also direct it. Look for more announcements in the next few months as he starts casting.

So there you go.

Cheers, Chismeister.

Mr. Spock

An official announcement was made on today at Comic-Con. Zachary Quinto will be living long and prosper as the new Mr. Spock. He is best known for his role as Sylar on NBC's Heroes.

Update: Leonard Nimoy is also returning. It was inferred that Nimoy is coming back as older Spock, not as a new character.

Why would they meet at Star Fleet?  Spock was already a crew member of the Enterprise when Pike was the captain.

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but Spock was 110 years old during the series.

Unfortunately, I don't think the people behind this film really care about this type of attention to detail. At first, they advertised this film as a reboot of the franchise, so those errors could have been easily written off. But now that Leonard Nimoy is returning and is coming back as an older Spock, a reboot doesn't really work.

Oh and here is the new teaser poster for the flick.

Only a partial reboot? Time traveling Romulans? Alternate timelines?

Apparently the plot for the next film has been revealed over at Ain't It Cool News. Moriarty, who has a friend with "a very nice office on Melrose" gave readers a hint at what they can expect from Abrams version of Trek.

Picture an incident that throws a group of Romulans back in time. Picture that group of Romulans figuring out where they are in the timeline, then deciding to take advantage of the accident to kill someone’s father, to erase them from the timeline before they exist, thereby changing all of the TREK universe as a result. Who would you erase? Whose erasure would leave the biggest hole in the TREK universe is the question you should be asking.

Who else, of course, but James T. Kirk?

I would assume that the Enterprise being built on Earth would mean it only had to exit the atmosphere and not enter it.

I read this amusing explanation at the Corner:

Quoted from The Corner

Jonah—

Just wanted to get my two somewhat positive cents in before you are
totally swamped by people who hate the idea of the new Star Trek
movie.

From all that I've read about the new flick, the plotline focuses on
time travel— specifically, it appears that the Romulans travel back in
time to kill Kirk when he's vulnerable, possibly even taking a stab at
killing Kirk's father.

The "old" Spock, i.e. the one played by Leonard Nimoy, knows something
strange is happening in *his* time, so he travels back to the younger
Kirk's era to warn him of the trouble afoot.

What does this mean for the nitpickers of all things canon? Well, if
the Romulans go back in time to kill Kirk's dad, the whole timeline
gets messed up. . . messed up in ways beneficial to a new director
wanting to change Trek to match his own ideas.

Need Kirk to be on the Enterprise earlier than originally thought? No
problem— the Romulans changed "history" and Kirk shows up at the
Academy a few years earlier than we remember it. Have to solve that
pesky problem that no one in The Original Series had *even seen* a
Romulan until Kirk fought one? No problem— these are Romulans from the
future that change everything.

Heck, you can even use this theory for everything— "Time-traveling
Romulans step on a butterfly in the 23rd century, and suddenly Kirk
knows how to drive stick, Scotty's lost all his hair, and the bridge
of the Enterprise looks like an Apple Store."

Anyway, I acknowledge that J.J. Abrams is playing a risky game by
"rebooting" Trek while still maintaining the thread to the past, i.e.
keeping Nimoy in the picture. Had Abrams gone the "reinvention" route
ala the Battlestar Galactica series, he'd have given himself a lot
more flexibility than he has now.

That said, the time travel scenario permits quite a bit to "change" in
this version of Trek. Me? I'm willing to give the movie a chance on
its own merits— as your other readers have written, it all comes down
to characterization.

    Cheers,
    Dave

I'm no Star Trek fan so I have no expectations.

I thought it was average.  Kind of like Star Wars with Star Trek characters.  While they did seem to get the characters fairly well they completely missed the point of the original series, which was to solve their problems non-violently if possible.
