Don't know if there is a thread for this already. If so I'm sorry!

This movie, for it's time, wasn't all that great. Even compared to the special effects used in films that had come out around that time, it was pretty lame. I mean, this film came out after Star Wars. The special effects in this stunk SO bad compared to Star Wars it wasn't even funny. In fact, for me, some of the characters were hard to look at.

FILM MAKING QUALITY: B-

The story was pretty good and something that had never been done before and for an independent group was a huge thing. So they were, in independent film making terms, were trying to do something that I'm sure wasn't thought possible.

STORY: A-

The acting was HORRIBLE! At least to me it was. I don't know. I think this film was a let down considering the hype it had around it. I don't know. It just seems like this film could of been so much more, even in that time..

Overall: C+

Nothing great at all even considering what year it was made. I wouldn't waste my time on it.

Oy, children! When Tron came out, it was still awesome. It's easy to compare it now 20 years later and judge it against its contemporaries, but you'll have to note that there was also a video game by the name of Tron. I don't recall which came first, but the movie's effects were replicating computer systems at the time, which the film did well. The Tron video game was almost identical to the film, which makes me wonder which did come first.

As a child, I enjoyed this film and did for many years after I initially saw it.

And Mike, that's just obsessive...

Well, you have to be an animation nerd that watches the behind the scenes of every single 3D and 2D animated movie I can find. Those guys were hyped about it. lol.

I just did a little mor eresearch on this, and apparently Tron was one of the first, if not the first film ever that used CGI to create entire scenes, and was WAY ahead of its time.  So much so, that it wasn't nominated for a Visual effect Oscar because the Aceademy viewed the use of a computer as "cheating".  The Abyss would go on to win 7 years later.

A few more reasons why Tron wasn't as big a hit as was hoped.  It was going against ET, and in 1982, not many people had home computers, much less knew about them, and a lot of the internal jargon was lost.

And based on a little more research, it looks like the movie came out before the games, but I also found this interesting piece of trivia.

Apparently, there is a scene in the movie where a sign is posted that says "Gort Klaatu barada nikto" in reference to the command that Gort was given to not destroy the world in The Day the Earth Stood Still.  Some may also remember it as the words that Ash had to speak when taking the Necronomicon from the graveyard, minus the Gort of course.

You learn something new every day.

Just had to make this one stand out because in light of recent films, this bit of history is kinda funny. It's interesting how history finally pans things out. By these standards, Star Wars III cheated the whole movie. I'll bet the people who worked on those scenes felt a little cheated though around Oscar time, and more so 7 years later. Ah, history. Gotta love it sometimes.
