There are people that do stupid stuff on these boards.  People that post poorly formatted scripts, people that don't read other people's work, and people that are just plain jerks.

And threads that center around these people seem to effortlessly grow into two or three page extravaganzas.  Everyone likes to jump on the righteous defender bandwagon and tell them why what they're doing is wrong.

Thing is, everyone knows they're wrong.  So do yourself and everyone else a favor, and stop bumping the threads.  Remember when that guy posted his script and said that it was "without debate the greatest script ever written"?  Breanne commented that she was angry because now a bunch of people would read the script just to prove him wrong.  Following her post were about ten posts by people going, "Guess what, jerk, it's NOT the best script!  HA!"

There are script review threads sitting around here that have three or four responses saying, "Well if it's not in good format, why post" or "If you don't review other scripts, why should we review yours?"

If you're not going to review their script, why post in their thread?  People are smart enough to figure out that the best way to get reads is to give them.  Eight people tell it to everyone who posts a "Hi all" thread in Getting To Know You.  If you think someone honestly doesn't understand correct format, kindly tell them how they can learn and be done with it.  If they argue that their format is fine the way it is, then screw 'em, don't read it.

I know these people are annoying, but the fact of it is that if you ignore them, they will go away.  So the next time someone says something inflammatory, or ignorant, or stupid...don't waste your time!  Think of all the great scripts by great writers on this site that you could be reading (and that are much more deserving of your time and reviews).

I agree with most of what you're saying, Heretic. However, I take slight issue with this point, because sometimes Don gives the formatting of some scripts the top rating and then other members take the writers of those scripts to task over their formatting.

I don't always format to the letter of the law, however, I think my formatting is good enough and people if don't want to read it because it's not "exactly" what some people call the Hollywood standard or whatever, then I think they need to relax a little.  

Of course you are right, Tic.  And it’s particularly frustrating to watch when you’ve got some new stuff up yourself, ain’t it?

I’ve been barking at a couple of people lately -- but hey, us purple guys get to do that -- and generally I do try to steer people in the right direction.

But then I will usually attract a few posts after mine.  And then it’s like moths to a flame.

You can’t fight it.  Arrogant people on these boards will always be a magnet for trouble.  

But if your little diatribe helps to assuage the problem even a bit, the next problem I want you to tackle is junk posts.

If you are posting more than 10 times a day, you are making junk posts.

Save your posts for when you’ve got something meaningful to say.  Like Tic here.

I agree with everything you've said and not only that, I practice it. I've rarely found myself involved in board flame wars and everyone knows there's been plenty (with the exception of that one sockpuppet who called us all hacks, he was just asking for it) and tend to avoid scripts that get majorly slammed. I've slipped up a few times but for the most part, ignoring attention whores has served me well. Glad to see someone else feels the same way.

I think the most I've ever posted in one day is five times. What exactly constitutes junk posts, may I ask? I've got an idea but that's about it.

I admit it’s easy to get carried away. One member sees a chance to play a bit with another member and posts something playfully; that member responds; and the next thing you know, the whole thread gets carried away. I don’t think there’s anyone here who hasn’t slipped into that mode.

Even this thread has already gone off topic.

At one time, I tried to stay just on the script threads. It severely limited the time I spent here because I oftentimes only have a few minutes to drop by and see what’s new. Being able to post something quickly allows me to have camaraderie even when there’s very little time.

For that matter, one could say most of the sections here - including the movie sections - are just junk. After all, this is a script site.

No need, maybe the thread needs to be cleaned out, but definitely not deleted. You had a valid question. In fact, I’ve recommended to Don that the Bot Question be added to the help section.

And, I've got nothing against camaraderie. My comment and I think Bert's original one, were aimed at people that post nothing but- junk. One person in particular is guilty of this, and he's even posted on this thread.

If you are thinking, "could he be talking about me?", look at your last 30 posts -- or 60 posts -- and figure it out for yourself.

Having said that I just downloaded Celtx. It's going to make formatting scripts a hell of a lot easier.

I estimate that four of them were written while a bunch of people were arguing with some dude.  Regardless of the quality of my writing, I think I may have come out on top in this one.

I feel compelled to pose the question once more.  Can't we just ignore people if we don't think they have anything to contribute?

I wouldn't have been so bothered except that I was trying to find a specific post in a thread and there was a lot more useless argument to wade through than I had expected.

We could ignore people that don't have anything to contribute, but then where would the fun be in that? :-)
