Promote your local bands!

I thought it be cool, seeing how SS is an international community, that people recommend cool bands from around where they live (city, state or province or whatever you got where you live). Bands that probably aren't well known in the great big world.

I'll start with three from my home town of Aarhus, Denmark:

Carpark North - Human

I'm not a huge fan of the band as such but I love this song and the video is awesome. Even if they kinda rip off the beat from My Sharona.

Veto - We are not your friends

I chose this one because the video, although pretty boring, kind of reminds me of one of my scripts (Yeah, you'll never guess which one...). The song is nice and mellow and the band is awesome. The lead singer has the best live vocals I've ever heard in a rock band.

Spleen United - Spleen United

We make kinda artsy videos in Denmark, huh?

What good is promoting local bands on an international forum? It's not as if thteir CD's will be available everywhere. And people only travel so far for a local band.

Two things:

CD's? Most people I know don't use CD's anymore. They use Mp3s. iTunes, anyone? They are available everywhere. That being said, 90% of my music collection comes from amazon.com or the likes. Welcome to the 21st century. ;)

If you had followed the links, you would see that I'm not talking about a cheap unsigned local alt. rock band struggling with their first Demo, but simply bands that are from your local area that may not have had an international breakthrough.

Two out of three of the bands I've mentioned are going on a U.S. tour this year and next.

It's simply about listening to new music that you wouldn't be exposed to otherwise, Phil. You don't have to participate, but I think you're inventing problems that really aren't there.

Anyway, I'll offer up the Soviettes -- they've broken up though. Also, and I'm sure most are familiar with these guys, The Replacements -- long dead, but if you want a taste of the Twin Cities, listen to "Skyway."

The problem with this thread is that people will name their local bands and it will end there. There won't be discussion of the bands themselves. Similar threads have happened with naming favorite movies and favorite directors. In the end, all you have is a list.

Throwin a plug up here for Dropkick Murphys...Bein a Boston Guy, these guys are the real deal...Got a new CD coming out in September...These guys have tweaked thier sound alot from hardcore punk to now more of celtic flavor, which given the Beantown roots fits real well...You might know them from the opening of the Departed...Consider yourselves plugged, boys...

Keep in mind you don't have to opine on everything. Sometimes silence speaks volumes. If you think the thread is useless, don't bump it. Pretty simple.

This thread us not a discussion thread per se, but you're right all we end up with is a list. We have to find the music ourselves. I'm sorry if I may sound condescending, but it doesn't seem like you're terribly familiar with the concept of iTunes or Peer-to-peer software like Limewire or Kazaa, because that's when the lists come in handy.

Much like a cooking recipe, you need to go get the ingredients yourself.

Again, if you want to to participate, please try to stay on topic and recommend some music.

I checked out the groups you posted, and, although not really my style, it is cool to see what folks in other places are listening too. As writers, I think that's a dimension that I think that rounds out a character. Makes a big difference if someone is listening to Junior Boys Techno-Pop on thier IPOD vs Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. A few of the short scripts used this to good effect, like the kid wearing the Korn tshirt. Tells me alot about that character just from that one detail. (A good example is Jack Black in School of Rock, as his character was a totally committed to the music he loved). I'm a metal guy, which is seems to be more popular in Europe than the US (Although we certainly have some standout artists here)...Particularly looking forward to new Arch Enemy coming out in Sept...you can check out the slammin' new track at http://www.Archenemy.net..

Love the Replacements!  Great call!

Saw The Dropkicl Murphy's last summer at one of the last shows at CBGB.

For Philly bands, check out Marah.  Especially if you like the Replacements.  My favorite band ever and the second best live band you'll ever see.

And they're not local, but the other band that everyone should check out is the Drive By Truckers.  Best live show you'll ever see.

Randy, thanks for the You Tube posts. Muse sounds great live, not just an excellent studio band. Oh well, time to take to my Black Dog outside before his levee breaks, and well, that'd be nobody's fault but mine...

Truthfully though, I enjoyed that one more than some of the other ones posted here.

I have a question for you writers out there. Do any of you have your iTunes sorted in order of genre like drama, drama sad, drama love, drama happy, action/thriller, comedy, horror and so on. Just wondering because I listen mostly to music to get me in the right mood for what I'm writing. I have a feeling I might be the odd one out though.

Pia, that's a great idea. Sometimes I'll set up a playlist of an imaginary soundtrack more according to character than scenario. I'm researching a story that takes place in the Rural South during the 50's, dealing with music segregation issues. One guy is a Kerouac beatnik, so I've got all bop jazz playlist set up for him (Bird, Gillespie, Miles, Satchmo) one for the white bread teens (Pat Boone, Patsy Kline-ugh, Big Band), and the Blues/proto rock for some of the more progressive kids (Robt Johnson, Jackie Brentson, Early Elvis, Chuck, Little Richard etc). It's a fun way to approach the characters as I try to get in thier heads a bit more...Excellent tip, though. I'm gonna do that. Thanks!

Yes, oddly enough it's really growing on me too. They opened for Justin Timberlake, didn't they?

I believe it was Natasha Beddingfield who opened for Timberlake. They might have though. My wife went to the concert, but they stood in line for two hours so they missed the opening acts.

Yeah, seems like I got things wrong. I just glanced through this article and thought it said they had opened for Timberlake.
