SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Things you are looking for  /  Looking for script/movie with internal conflict

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a screenplay (may be a movie too) in which a hero and a villain are the same person, I mean I'd like it to be something with big internal and neurotic conflict, a hero who, after something terrible happened because of his egoistic actions, starts to realize what kind of person he really is and after that he wants to change himself but both, his nature and bad luck, turns all his attempts to even more disasters and eventually to sad ending.
kind of thing with :"no matter what you do, you have to pay for all bad you've done" premise

need it in order to learn how to create such a character.
thanks in advance

See if you can pick up a copy of 'The Watchmen.'  That might be what you're looking for.

There's also the Jean Grey saga in the X-Men movies.

Adaptation?  The Watchmen was originally a comic book mini series by Alan Moore.  They're making a movie out of it now.

That's what I meant :-/
Probably should write it in a different way, sorry...

ok, doesn't have to be that kind of hero/conflict... :)

it also could be a completely different thing but what I'd like to observe is how the hero learns about himself, how he recognizes and faces his own demons, how he eventually finds the truth about himself and overcomes his nature in order to achieve his goal, or loses his battle and lets 'the dark side" wins'
still would prefer scripts without antagonist as other person, though. need it to be inside the hero

something like Luke Skywalker and his journey only without Lord Vader would be perfect:)

oh, forgot to mention that hero can have a mentor ;D

Hey,

Not sure if it's exactly what you want but you could try Oedipus(I presume the original stage play version is best although I'm sure there are screenplay versions if you insist on that) . Most(all?) tragedies have main characters doomed by their character flaws.

Another one that may fit the bill, off the top of my head, is There will be Blood.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a decent movie, but you will probably want to see how Doctor Jeckyll and Mister Hyde were portrayed.

Hmm, interesting question (and amazing run-on sentence). This may not be exactly what you're going for, but one good film that came to mind was Memento. The main character isn't really battling himself but rather discovering things about himself that he can't remember. So, in a way, he is almost two characters.

What abouot those films that portray a serial killer like Ed Gein or Jeffery Dahmer?

Hi,
Mr. Ripley: did some research into Ed Gein and Jeffery Dahmer stories, there is no "I want to change" element, which is quite important for me, but thanks...
Pete: feel free to point out all of my spelling errors :) I am serious, english is not my first language, I'm still learning so this will only help me. As about Memento, I've seen it and (although it's a great movie) it's not what I'm looking foor.

thinking all the time about it by myself and the best thing I can do now is to start working on my idea, develop and write it down, put it here and see what will happen... ;D

so, (still waiting for new movies, watching those I've already got) I am going to work now...

thanks again to everybody

Superman + Red Kryptonite = kind of what you're talking about. At least in the Smallville series.

Sorry if these are not exactly what you are looking for, but it's all I could really think of -

Thelma & Louise (both the lead characters)
X-Men (Jean Grey, comics and movies)
Fight Club (maybe)

If I can think of any more I will post them.

Hi Peter,

I may be a bit late, you may have found what you are looking for. I thought I would offer my script Hostile Conscience as my main character is battling an inner struggle of psychotic episodes brought on by an insatiable guilt. I cannot promise that it was done particularly well since it was my first attempt at screenwriting, but it does seem to fit the type scenario you are seeking. The antagonist and protagonist are the same person.

I just submitted this script today. I'm not sure how long before it will be posted.

I hope this will help
Brad
