SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  February, 2010 One Week Challenge  /  February 2010 One Week Challenge is coming
Posted by: Don, February 3rd, 2010, 7:00pm
Can you write a script in one week?  Can you write a script on a particular theme or genre in one week?  This is the challenge for you.  On February 5th, 2010 at 10:00 a theme and genre will be posted on this board.  Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a 6 to 12 page, properly formatted script on the theme and genre presented.

The Schedule:

2/5  10:00 pm est - theme and genre will be announced
2/12 11:59 pm est - submit your script (you can submit earlier if you wish).
2/14 scripts will be posted without the writer's names on them.
2/21 writers names to be revealed.

The twist this OWC is that one or two scripts will be selected to be turned into a machinima.

What is a machinima?  See below to give you an idea of what we are talking about.

Nice idea! I skipped the last one (out of laziness, mostly) so I hope to enter something this time round. Hope, but not promise. I might or might not - we'll see...

Interest in these things has grown amazingly even in the 15-or-so months I've been on the boards, so hopefully we'll have a lot of good, enjoyable entries this time round too.

You bewdy! For some reason I thought this was starting Feb 13?  Ripper, something to get stuck into over the weekend!

It's de rigueur to not declare one's intention to participate in the OWC, so I won't. But I'm certainly looking forward it. ;)

That machinima is pretty cool - and nice story, Pia. How long does it take to produce a machinima, approximately?

I never participate in these trivial exercises.  HaHa!  Funny...yeah, I'll most likely be in.  Looking forward to it.

Listening to the SS Radio, so I can't check out this machinima thing.

Hope it's a horror based theme, set in WI or CO.

AYYEEE!!!!!

AAAYYYEEE!!!!!  Yes!!   Let's get started then.  A road trip, zombie, slasher script, all in 12 pages.

Not to mention ubiquitous fab four references (always welcomed in my books, I may add. Post "Help" preferably)

I'm thinking the lyrics to "Tomorrow Never Knows" intermingled with a signature Dreamscale death sequence involving a Converse shoe lace, kiwi flavoured gum, a used cue tip (de-chalked) and a single, slightly overdone poached egg.

I'll leave the rest up to ye, I can say no more...

Col, I'm seriously hopeing you jump in with your own OWC.  It is time, my friend.  Jump in...you'll enjoy it.  It's actually quite the challenge...

I have considered it a number of times, it is a great challenge but I never get anything down on paper in time for it (see my post on the thread "How much time do you spend to write?) I realised a long time ago that I would be absolutely woeful if required to write something within prescribed deadlines, the thought scares me.

This should be fun, I'm pumped.

Tommy!  You're in?  YES!  I'm pumped as well.  Hope it's a good theme...no more children's or family crap!

Agreed...but we'll have to wait and see.

But it is a good one, isn't it?  Don has really been coming up with some great stuff this past year or so.

And I am gonna bend Don's ear until he blocks my account that NON-READERS SHOULD NOT QUALIFY for the big "prize".

If you play in the challenge, read some dang scripts in the challenge!!

Don't post a script if you don't intend to read scripts.  Don't be a leech.

And this was the other reason to start the Script Club a little earlier than planned.
Posted by: Dreamscale (Guest), February 4th, 2010, 9:44pm; Reply: 14
George, I think you guys started it too early...especially now that I know tomorrow is the new OWC!

I still haven't read Armored, and at this point, it doesn't look like I'll be in.  Sorry, cause I really actually wanted to see that movie in the theater, and now that I hear that the script was totally compromised, I'm even more curious to read it and get involved in a discussion.

Doesn't look like it will be happening though.  Sorry, all!

There's still going to be another week before the OWC's are posted so it's a good time to read Armored. It's an easy breezy read too.

I will not take part in the OWC because I'm seriously trying to train myself to writing features. Sorta liked the sample of Machinima that Don put up though.  ;)

I will try to read the entries though. I'm not bogged down with a stack of scripts to read at the moment....unless I have forgotten someone. If I have, please let me know.

Good Luck everyone!  :)

Pia, I'm going to assume that you're just saying you won't enter the OWC, as many, including myself, have said over and over again, to make it look like you're out.  I predict you'll be in...and I sure hope you are.  Especially when we get the theme of pure, unadulterated horror, no punhs held!  C'mon!!!!!!

YES!!!!!

I think the genre should be action. Has there ever been an action OWC? Could be fun.

Valentines Day is coming up.  I'm willing to bet the genre will be romantic/comedy.
Sorry about your luck, Dreamscale.
Posted by: Dreamscale (Guest), February 5th, 2010, 11:46am; Reply: 19
RomCom is OK with me...as long as there aren't any rating restrictions.  My next feature is gong to be a RomCom anyways, so why not get started now?

Maybe the theme will be different ways to kill your lover with some sort of heart shaped weapon?

I haven't done one sense the SEVEN DEADLY SINS OWT. Been too busy. I think depending on the topic, I might jump in as well. Is the start time tonight still?

I wonder if it would be entirely wrong to not only submit multiple entries, but make them a multi-part series...each part no longer than 15 pages, of course. Just musing, of course, but the thought entertains me. People have done multiple entries before, myself included, but I don't think they've ever related to each other.
Posted by: Dreamscale (Guest), February 5th, 2010, 2:59pm; Reply: 23
I wouldn't recommend it, George.  Keep it simple and submit a killer script!

We had that one with the houseboat...that had some good actioney scripts...(Cobra Blood Cocktail and the like)

Yeah, but that was thriller. Why not do Action with Valentines Day as the theme? That'd be great!

I'm serious Jeff. I'm way too busy at the moment and I'm trying to concentrate on features. I haven't entered an OWC in a year or so.

However....if the theme is  horror/push the envelope...

Cool. I'm Ready. Here's Carl Orff's Carmina Burana...You could not possibly have an Action valentines day script with out Carmina!

The February OWC theme and genre have been LEAKED!!!!!!!!!

Theme:

A man who wins the lottery gets robbed.

Genre:

Adult.

Dull theme. Been done many times. Let's change it to "A man loses his family jewels"

The genre is fine though.

I'm still trying to come up with the theme and genre.  I still have an hour and a half to pull something out.  Based on Carmina Burana vid from Blakkewolf, I'm thinking something along the lines of penguins and cleavage...

That might work if it's horror...or adult.

Carmina Burana is both.  Hasn't anyone read the lyrics?

Otherwise known as a John Terry.

(I defy anyone outside the UK to get that joke without having to do a little internet research!)

I'd imagine that story has made the news all around the world, it certainly has here in Australia.

So looks like the challenge has been set...

Theme: The Dark – A complete story that sheds light into the darkest reaches of the mind, into deepest shadows of the imagination and into the blackest void at the end of the universe.

Genre: horror, supernatural thriller, fantasy, or science fiction.

Should make for some interesting stories.

It's a BYOB or Merlot at Skype...waiting for the "ball" to drop, announcing the OWC.

Yes, but I mention him because he's been front page news in the UK all week. England football captain impregnates team mate's ex-girlfriend (and mother of his son) during their six month affair...he's been witch-hunted all week. He was stripped of the captaincy this afternoon - ah, the power of the media!

I knew nothing about it.  I just took a guess based on your pun.

Therefore, I pee on your defycation!

Wait...that didn't sound right.

It was, admittedly, a pretty shit joke. :)

Unlike this OWC theme, which is actually really cool! Trickily vague, but cool.
