This isn't really a rumor since it's been confirmed but, Henry Cavill IS the new SUPERMAN!

Thoughts?  Yay or Nay?

I've never heard of him but, physically speaking, he definitely fits my romantic idea of what I think Superman should look like.

Perhaps someone could post a picture -- I would but don't know how.

Can't really say I agree with you. At 6 1 he's just a little too short to play Superman. He's like a second choice. I think I could do a better job myself :)

I'll vote yay. Seems like a good choice.

Don't know much about this guy as I don't watch 'The Tudors'. Brandon Routh was a great choice in the last film but was hampered in that the film failed to ignite at all. Let's hope this new film doesn't fail to hit the heights as Louis Leterrier's Hulk, which failed to improve on Ang Lee's and surely killed off that character for a while.

As a small child I remember being profoundly upset when I learned that Superman didn't need his cape to fly.

I never got over that -- But I sure did get over him.  I don't really care who they cast because we all know it won't be the last person cast for the role.  There will be another reboot in 5 years or so; just give it some time.

Superman is one of those roles any halfway-decent actor can play. I never liked the character much, to be honest, and the role is not exclusive to one actor either.

To be honest, no one is a "de-facto" Superman like Robert Englund is the "de-facto" Freddy Krueger and Brad Douriff is the "de-facto" Chucky, so I couldn't care less who plays him. Most of the time, whether a character is likeable in a film or not depends more on the screenwriter and director than it does with the actor, at least with established characters like Clark Kent.

That's why I've never cared who portrays characters like Superman, Batman, etc. Another actor always comes in and replaces the previous one almost immediately, so people never get attached to one portrayal of their character. I was surprised when Christian Bale returned for The Dark Knight.

I was looking forward to Man Of Steel, the follow up to Superman Returns which I personally thought was pretty damn good, and although I'm dissapointed this will be another reboot, I am intrigued by what this is going to turn into.

Also interested in how WB expect this to turn over the multi millions they seem to demand and expect when they might well get a lot less, but time will tell.

I don't rate Snyder at all but I shall keep little faith until I see the final product.

I've always loved Superman movies - the first three ( and yes, I include 2 & 3) were what made me love movies in general. I can still watch them now and enjoy the heck outta them.  

Personally, I also liked Superman Returns. I thought it was a massive homage to the original movie but also tried to move in other areas. In a time of "let's just remake the fricking thing" it was nice that Singer tried a bit of both. It clearly didn't work for the masses but I get a massive kick out of it.

Superman Returns was good, but not great.  Although I thought Brandon Routh was fine in the role.  The story was just decent and I really thought they should have gone with a different villain other than Lex Luthor.  Gene Hackman owned that role and it was kind of played out by the time Spacey got to it.

Just saw an interesting article on Yahoo as to why so many of these superhero roles are going to Brits and Aussies.  Basically said there simply weren't too many American actors with the combination of physical size and acting chops to pull off roles like Batman, Thor, etc.

I liked it as well, but that scene was fucked up. I've never been a fan of superman. He's too indestructible. It just doesn't make for good obstacles to overcome unless kryptonite is involved... and it always is.

I know a lot of fans were in uproar about that scene but I liked it - I thought it showed Supe's human side, which is what I've always liked about the character.
I found that his innocence, in particular in the first film, and his attempts to fit in amongst society aswell as do the right thing with all his power were great conflicts and obstacles.

I'd like to see a different adversary other than just Lex, and sure, a big battle is overdue and would be pretty cool to see. I'm quite sure that's what the Returns follow up would have delivered anyway.

Few rumours speculate about Ursa being involved which may naturally include Zod. I'm sure this will also annoy other fans as they've been used before but that was thirty years ago. I won't personally have a problem with it.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops.

The first glimpse at the new Superman movie “Man of Steel” by Zack Snyder with Chris Nolan on as producer. Not much to see really but it looks darker than previous versions with “Russell Crowe’s” Jor-El voice over and a strong music score. Looks promising…

There’s also another trailer but with Kevin Costner doing the voice over as Pa Kent.

Loved that teaser. No idea why someone would think of using Lord of the Rings music, but it works. I've always wanted a much darker interpretation of the character. Like James said above, he's too indestructible and too incorruptible, so no Superman movie has ever actually delivered an interesting version of him. Looks like that's what they're doing here, although I still think his outfit looks dumb. Red boots? C'mon, would it kill him to read a copy of GQ?

Great teaser, thanks for the share, Steve. Snyder is one of my favourite directors.

Just hoping that they don't shoot the action scenes in hand held like they did with everything in the teaser.

Actually, Nolan had been working on this for more than six months before Snyder was hired. It was his idea.

Yeah Nolan stepped out of the director's chair in early 2010.
Warner made the deal with Snyder later that year.
But, my point is that after Sucker Punch tanked...
Suddenly, Nolan is doing all the press for almost a year.
It's like they lost all faith in the guy. I don't blame them.

Sucker Punch was just TERRIBLE. Haven't read the script, but the story was WOEFUL, what am I saying, there was no story. It seems as if this was just pure geek fantasy stuff that they wrongly assumed would sell. Hot girls and weapons, fantasy world, violence, CGI - but all incredibly pointless. It was a computer game plot, not a film.

I know I'm asking for disappointment, but I guess I'm still interested in seeing a Zack Snyder-directed, Hans Zimmer-scored, John Williams-less Superman movie. Snyder's going off a Nolan script, the teaser isn't nearly as stylized as '300' or 'Sucker Punch,' Zimmer found the right sound for Nolan's 'Batman' movies, and the old Williams stuff is still some of my favorite music of all time but it's not really fitting with the Nolan approach. So I'll let myself enjoy it if it's enjoyable, but I will be the first to say, "I told you so, world!" if it sucks. ;)

The Donner/Mankiewicz approach is one of the best examples of entertainment to ever hit the silver screen in all of film history, in my book. Despite its flaws. That's because Tom and Dick (and wth...Harry Andrews) knew how to have fun with it by using mostly normal, everyday situations to exploit the character and flesh him out. Sure, there were a few scenes/sequences that were over-the-top and bended some rules, but a comic book movie all but needs to do that at some point. Doesn't mean the rest of the movie has to suck. My favorite material comes out of the scenes at the Daily Planet or when Superman performs the simple rescues, like the elevator gag or getting the cat out of the tree. A lot of superhero movies--or just movies in general--don't bother to use the mundane to explain the extraordinary and a recipe for mediocrity that creates, methinks.

They actually ripped that score from Lord of the Rings. It was Howard Shore.



Which means to me, this was a pretty quickly tossed together trailer just in order to create a buzz. I always trust in Hans Zimmer to write a knockout soundtrack, but this isn't his music in the trailer.

Oh, I wasn't talking about the score in the teaser. Just the film's score in general. I was just naming off reasons why I'm giving "Man of Steel" the benefit of the doubt. I brought up the teaser because it seemed like Snyder's reined in the visuals a bit more, compared to his last outings. Then, on a separate note from the teaser, Hans Zimmer will probably find the right sound for the movie that he did for Batman. It's taken me years to admit this, but Zimmer's good at what he does. I just don't like him nearly as much as composers from the generation before his. :)

I liked it. I'm becoming much more interested in this than GSAF II: The Rerun of Khan.

The trailer looked good.  Wouldn't mind seeing this one.

I liked it, loving the dark undertone but would have liked to have seen more of Zod in the trailer.

Certainly looking forward to this new take on the famous hero. Fingers crossed.

Both the teaser and the new trailer have impressed me. It appears there will be an interesting dynamic, with both Costner and Crowe playing off one another - thematically - to help Clark Kent become Superman. The Costner line in the trailer re: 'the man you choose to be will change the world' resonated with me.

Definitely excited to see this one.

Did they really have to crib the score to Gladiator for that extra doom and gloom?
There's so much Smallville angst, I can't tell if this is an origin tale or a soap opera.

And is it just me, or are the filmmakers playing the Jesus card with Cavill?
The beard. The poses. The exile. The resurrection as a superhero.
The imagery and choreography reeked of those overtones to me.

But still...this looks okay.

Thought same thing. Although I liked the trailer, Snyder is hit and miss for me.  Still not convinced yet - but will wait for the next trailer.

Along Brett's sentiments, the tone doesn't really feel like Superman to me. Seems to be stepping into a territory Batman is generally more suited for.

I liked Brandon Routh's Superman, but felt Singer made a misstep by trying to essentially recreate Chris Reeve. I think distancing the new Superman from the Reeve films is definitely the right direction. I just hope they found the right tone.

Loved the new trailer. No one's ever made a Superman movie the right way as far as I'm concerned. They never did him the way I thought he should be done, but it looks like Snyder/Nolan/Goyer have nailed it.

Pretty epic. I wish we could get a good look at a Lois Lane scene, though. I want to see Amy Adams in action, but I guess there'll be plenty of time for that.

Growing up, reading Superman comics as a kid, I never found the DC comic to be dark or overwrought with deep analytical thinking.  He just picked up trains and flew with a cape and skin tight suit and fooled people into thinking that he and Clark Kent were two totally separate people.  But I was also a kid and must have missed the deeper meaning (KRYTONITE WAS AN PREDICTOR OF GLOBAL WARNING PEOPLE, RIGHT?)...

But really, why another reboot?  I could understand a continuation of the story, like the Dark Knight trilogy, but why keep retelling the same story?  I know, because it sells tickets.  I don't even know why I asked.

Anyone else as fired up as I am with this new trailer? Love the aspect Nolan and Goyer used that the "S" is simply a symbol of hope.

Listen to that sound track as well. Hans Zimmer is rocking it again. That man is sickly brilliant.

I'll be in line opening day, they got their hooks in me...

I'm excited about it. Love the music!

It's kinda like cheating on a wife by saying this... but even though I'm working on a Marvel film now (due out in August 2014), I just prefer the way DC are putting their stuff together. Some call it too dark or whatever, but I call the other stuff too light.

This is looking very, very promising.

I don't know if anybody watches the animated films that are pretty much only on Netflix as far as I know -- I watch them sometimes with the kid -- but DC has it all over Marvel in that area, too.

They have done some pretty terrific stuff with Batman, by animation standards, anyway.

Marvel doing good stuff, too, but the film I'm on now... I think it's going to surprise people with how good it can be.

As it stands, however, Iron Man obviously no match for Superman! But I better keep my mouth shut before I'm fired ;P

I like the route DC has taken. A bit more adult subject matter for an aging fan base who want more realism. At the same time, these are the icons I grew up with. I would hate to see any of my fave superheroes become so dark and gritty that today's kids can't identify with them. Almost feels like they're being robbed. And last I checked, most of them represent the best of humanity.

Must be a difficult balance to please your adult crowd and still give the kids something to cheer about. I think Marvel is actually doing a better job in this aspect.

Yep. I'll be there too but I was also there for Superman Returns in '06 and I had high hopes for that one as well. In saying that, this version does look great and I love the darker undertone not to mention Michael Shannon as Zod.

Although I fear the wrath of Simon (Not Zod) for this. ;D I decided to upload the new, and I think best trailer so far for all you Superman fans to check out. It’s got more Zod, action and an awesome soundtrack.

He was outstanding in the Tv series "The Tudors." Handsome with an edge... I know I wouldn't like standing next to him at a party... I'd get zip attention. That said, he was brilliant in his role.... subtle but efficient.

It's interesting that foreign actors have overtaking Americans in iconic American roles. Batman is British. now Superman. Not complaining, really I'm not as I'm all for the best actor landing the role. I personally love the latest Aussie invasion, apart from Mel Gibson and Ncole Kidman, et al, the lead in "Walking Dead" playing a Southerner is magnificent. As an American, personally i don't mind if a foreigner plays an American superhero, but I don't think I'd enjoy 007 played by an American.

Does that make me a hypercrite?

Although I ain't sure about Cavill - I really think they may have nailed the rest of it - Goyer's solid, and Snyder's got cred (Nolan's only producing - I thought he would be directing ... :(), so I'm getting pretty excited about this to be honest. I'd still have preferred the Coen's to have written it - but you can't have everything :)

Don't know about the film but our Henry brought his mates Russell Crowe and Amy Adams here yesterday to our small island - bit of a moment for us!!

Went to see it today - got there a bit late, and the theatre was crammed - never seen it so full, lucky I got a seat at all.

Rotten tomatoes gaves it 56%, but RT audience gave it 82%

Beginnings was great - they worked that out well, and the story-line on the whole's well thought through, but later on there's some horrible plot holes. Some really good FX in there.

Ending dragged out for me - packed it full of fx, but neither of SP nor GZ seemed to feel any ill-effect no matter how many buildings they got rammed into, and oft-times I had to wonder just who was winning.

Cavill was fine but it's not really a role that's going to stretch anyone, and M Shannon was a worthy adversary. I actually thought Costner was quite good as well.

Overall, I thought they did the 're-work' on it quite well, but after the re-work (boot) they had to actioneer the bolted on end, and they really went for a bunch of films you've seen before - blow as much up as you can. The human side of the story's worth developing, but as they come in $20m bites, what do you do with the other £180m?

So I liked the start, and most of the middle, but it ended with nothing new brought to the party. :)
