Hey y'all,

Anybody else interested in doing a script club after the October OWC? There's a script-to-screen comparison I want to do. I read the script a while ago (and loved it), but when I saw the filmed version today it was interesting to see the changes that had been made. It's also a relevant script to us because it was a first (spec) sale by somebody who'd not been produced before, and it opened doors for them.

The script is Going the Distance by Geoff LaTulippe. It's a romcom about a couple trying to sustain a long-distance relationship. The film ended up starring Justin Long and Drew Barrymore, but it's pretty different to the original spec that presumably got all the attention (including a place on the Black List a couple of years ago) - I think it'd be really interesting to talk through the changes, why they were made, whether they were for the better, why the script got noticed, why (in my opinion) it works, etc. The script is readily available online here - http://www.mypdfscripts.com/screenplays/going-the-distance-early-draft - to avoid the confusion that seemed to happen with Black Swan, we'd be reading the earlier draft, the 111 page version. It's a fast, easy read, in my opinion it's really, really funny (or at least, I remember it being really funny) and I'm not sure rom-com is a genre that's been done in Script Club before? Or if it has, it's not been done often. A script-to-screen comparison would be good, but for those who don't want to watch the film I think there's good material to talk about just from the screenplay.

I know there's a lot of hate for this genre from all you gorehounds on here, but these scripts always seem to do well - there's always going to be more of a demand for romcoms than for torture porn flicks. And besides, maybe we'll learn something? Let me know if anyone's interested.

Oh, and by the way - two back-to-back OWCs? Really?

I'm dying to see how a good script translated into a film with such low ratings, both critical and general audience, the latter of which managed to make the film barely profitable.

I'm in.  I really enjoyed the film.

I'm not opposed to the idea, it's a useful exercise, even if I hate the genre!

Click on 'Download script', then in the pop-up click, 'regular download', then in the next pop click 'click here to start download from sendspace', which is about half way down. Just tried it again and it worked for me!

Yep, I'm in:) Who knows, maybe the OWC really will be horror, and the romcom would be a nice relief:)

I like the genre, but I hated this script. Still, I'd be interested.
