SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Screenwriting Class  /  Using CONTINUOUS in slug lines.

I have a question because I see it used sometimes and sometimes...well, I don't see it used.

Do you have to use CONTINUOUS in the slug lines? I personally don't like to if the action already reads clearly but like I've said...sometimes I see it, sometimes I don't.

Thanks!

Continous should only be used when things are happening at the same time and same place as the previous scene.

Which is why I always get upset when people complain that I use continuous in my stuff. Apparently, they don't see that almost all my scripts play out in a real time (or close to it) format.

Shawn's busy making me all confuzzled... =)

I like the way "continuous" can be used to hold continuous sequence together. Basically what Pia said, using the widest possible understanding of "place".

For example, let's say we have a car chase that involves INTs from more than one car, and EXTs from more than one location related to the chase. I'd use continuous on all these slugs.

Likewise: a sequence like in the latest Fockers movie, where the father in law follows the son. I think it starts in the house, continues outside, ends up on a subway car. I would use continues and moments later, things like that. I think it helps the reader know the scene headings are strung together in sequence.

Seconded pretty much!

Though I'd swap out the word "place" for "sequence".
As in multiple aspects of a chase/goal unfolding at the same time.

I like using them to convey...duh...a fucking continuous scene.  If you don't use it and you're not able to use a Mini, you're making a mistake, IMO.
