SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Screenwriting Class  /  2 Separate Dialogues Side by Side

Hey guys,

I was watching Jaws the other day and noticed in one scene there was 2 dialogues running at the same time, one a telephone conversation and one a chat between 2 people and was wondering how this would be written up.

One was not the main and the other in the background, they where both relevant and equally important dialogues.

Would they be written up one after the other though somehow linked ????

Just curious as this threw me.

On final draft it's called dual dialogue. As long as it is still easy to read/understand to the reader, I've used it before.

You write the dialogue as normal, one after the other for two separate characters.

Then, you highlight both.  And click "Format" I think, and click "Dual Dialogue".

Hope this helps. :)

Hey Alex.

Dual Dialogue is formatted like this...

                       MARIE                                                  BOB
I'm sick of your bullshit! Why              O yeah? Well you're not exactly
can't I do what I want you                   Little-Miss-Perfect, either! Dumb
        worthless piece of shit!                       Woman!

-Of course, it doesn't have to be an argument. It could be anything.

Are you going to have it where the characters are talking over each other?  Talking simultaneously?  Or are you going to switch between one conversation and the other?  If it's the latter, I would go with INTERCUT.

Thanks Phil,

Neither, I saw the scene in "Jaws" and it got my attention.

Now that i know though, I'm sure i'll use it somewhere down the track.
