SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Movie/Television Rumor  /  Ben Affleck cast as Batman in Man of Steel 2

Hmm... interesting.

I can't really see "Batman" in Affleck though, he's got the look of Bruce Wayne, but Batman?

Then again, I said the same thing about Heath Ledger as Joker, and then I got my mouth shut after watching a magic pencil trick.

Thoughts?  Good or Bad?  The Right Choice or a Bold Move?

Wasn't Man of Steel, Superman? :D

eh reminds of when the studios picked George Clooney. I wouldnt say he's a good choice or a bad choice. He's a safe choice.

With the summer blockbusters performing terribly, the studios didn't want to take any risks. Kind of sad really.

I'm sure he'll be alright. His acting has improved over the years and my god, was Argo fantastic. So I'll give him a chance. He deserves it.

Bring back Michael Keaton!

Ben Affleck is a tremendous actor... if he's directing himself. The Town and Argo are brilliant films. Haven't really seen him in too much else recently, bar Terrence Malick's To The Wonder, but he didn't really have too much space there to show his acting chops. So I guess it's time to see how much he really has improved working with directors other than himself :D

The whole world is pissed that Bale is not coming back. I don't like Affleck at first thought, but hell, he may actually be good in this role. I just think this whole film is doomed for mediocrity. It will make its money. No doubt, I'm just not expecting to be impressed by this mash up.

I'm actually more concerned about who they cast for Lex Luthor.

Lex Luthor is a tough cookie to dip in milk... but...

Ben Foster (if they want to go the young route)
Bryan Cranston (if they want someone older)

Those two could play great Lex Luthor's.

I hope it's Brandon Routh.  Oh the duality.

I'm all for Affleck as Batman.  Dude gets a bum rap; I've always thought he was under-appreciated as an actor.  However he's obviously already proven himself to be a tremendous director.

It's too early to make a call. Depends entirely on where they take the character. The buzz suggests that Batman is very much second fiddle, meaning we're going to see a very different interpretation of the character to the standalone Batman films. In that light, there's no reason to suggest Affleck is a disastrous choice as some predict.

My biggest concern for Affleck is that he overhams the arrogance of Bruce Wayne and becomes that generic version of a Ben Affleck cocky character. If he can subvert that cockiness in some way (as he did superbly in Mallrats), he'd be a great Bruce Wayne. Personally, I think his Bruce Wayne will be a dealbreaker. If you can't believe an actor as Bruce, you won't believe him as Batman.

Yep, case closed.  He's going to have to step his game up for this one as Bruce.

We all know Batman's origins, but I curious to how it plays out introducing a new version in a film not dedicated solely on his character.

It puts an iconic hero in jepordy if you ask me.  I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about it imploding.

did Christian Bale really turn down 50 million?

It is the word on the street. Any guy who could reduce himself from a 200lb bruiser to a 120lb starved Skitzo has more conviction than I will ever know. I think he would've returned if Christopher Nolan did. Seems as he's standing on his word and missing the biggest payday of his life. I respect that.

Ben is a good actor, when he gets a role that doesn't stretch him beyond his ability and more importantly his believability. I'm willing to give him  chance as a cinema goer, but if I was a studio or casting director, I'd be very nervous about handing over the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. I'd can't imagine Bruce with Bens voice, or Batmans menace with Bens tooth grin. Daredevil anyone!?

Jason Lee could be Lex Luthor

Jason Mewes is the Joker, Kevin Smith the Penguin

Matt Damon could be Batgirl

Dude, you are out of control.

Jason Lee as the Penguin, Jason Mewes as Lex, and Kevin Smith as the Joker.

Batgirl will play Matt Damon.

I'm pretty excited. The people I worry about are Zach Snyder and (to an extent) Goyer, as they made some bad choices in Man of Steel. I was sorely disappointed by that film.

I really hope Affleck gets some creative input on future DC films, still hoping for him to direct the Justice League movie.

Not surprised with the complaints about Affleck.

A lot of people shit on Nolan's Batman trilogy for the dumbest reasons.

Ok, it was recently announced that Affleck will be writing some of the screenplay and he's been given a 3 picture deal. This gives me way more hope for the Justice League film series, and I don't have any doubts about it being successful.

Well...this is still a rumor, but looking more and more likely.

According to this report, Lex Luthor will be played by Bryan Cranston.  We'll see...

I've never really been a fan of the Amazing Atheist, but I've respected most of his opinions. I think I should point out some things about his video:

5. Yeah he did. There really isn't any arguing against this. Although one thing is for sure: he was most likely as disappointed in this film as the audience. It's well known he's a huge fan of comics, so the fact that the movie wasn't able to cut it was probably also painful to Affleck.

4. I can't really argue against this one either. Although I've never vehemently hated any of his performances that I've seen, sometimes he can be wooden. But he was pretty good in the films he's directed and the Kevin Smith movies, but I still agree that he isn't particularly great. But there's one thing: Batman isn't the main character. He doesn't have to hold up the movie by himself. It's a SUPERMAN/BATMAN movie, which people seem to forget.

3. Really? His chin? To be honest, his face would look a lot like the Dark Knight Returns batman under the mask.

2. He doesn't need to be, Bruce Wayne isn't exactly an intimidating character. But in Batman, his "soft face" isn't going to make a difference, because he's behind the mask and he could easily be intimidating at that point.

1. But what about Michael Keaton? People FREAKED OUT when Keaton was cast, and I don't think anyone would complain about his performance now. I mean really, nobody would have expected Mr. Mom could have been a good Batman.

Plus, nobody has seen any posters or any trailers of the new movie, so judging him at this point is probably not a good thing to do. And I really, really hope he doesn't suck. Also, as I have said before, Affleck is a HUGE fan of comics, so that would make for a more rounded view of the character.

Oh really, now?  So you've not seen Changing Lanes?  The Town?  Chasing Amy?  Argo?  Dude's got chops.  What he doesn't have is the ability to discern between a good project and a bad one -- but he's getting better at it.

I stand by what I said, Bat-facepalm be damned.

And now there's rumours that Justin Bieber is playing Robin... what?

This is almost certainly not true, the studios aren't going to want to deal with the flack. Plus they risk losing a huge chunk of their audience.
