SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Things you are looking for  /  A Family Film that I can Shoot This Year

Hi guys,
I've submitted some works in the past and made some short films with them.  However, I've come to the conclusion that my scripts are terrible (so are my movies) and I'd like to partner with someone and make a family film that doesn't entail too much cast.

I'm essentially looking for something that is for kids and that also has a family friendly theme to it.

I'm also looking for a feature.  I appreciate it.

All due respect Joe but it's not exactly a tantalizing proposition for a writer to provide material to someone who acknowledges their movies - are 'terrible'.

So, are we to assume you want to team up with someone to collaborate on both the writing and filming?

LC, yes a partnership.  Let me correct myself in that regard.  My movies were terrible because I wrote them, I think.

Fair enough. Just wanted to clarify. :)

What sort of budget do you have for the film?

I have quality production equipment.  I would invest $1000 into this.

Family feature, eh?  Something for kids... hm...

What exactly are you looking for?  Drama, comedy, dramedy?

Professional production equipment is the same thing as money and, depending on what you have, could add thousands to the budget. Being able to source free locations helps too, free actors that don't mind working for home-cooked food... it can be done.

Good luck with your project. I'm sure there are a few writers here that this would suit.

Good luck, Joe.
I think it would be easier and wiser to film several shorts first (and not just a couple). Might be just an opinion.
But don't listen to me - I'm old...))

I actually have plenty of experience filming shorts.  I've written features but they're so hard to get right. I'm terrified of features.  A feature actually demands structure and a build-up of characters.  A short is basically a giant short cut, where you don't need all the elements to get a complete product.  So I'm not interested in a short.  And at my age, I'm way past due for filming my first feature.  So I'm interested in a feature that I can submit for distribution.

Leegion, I'm interested in a comedy.

Got a link to any of your shorts? Win any festivals etc?

Oh, I got it. You're talking about the scripts only when you say they are terrible. Otherwise this:

my scripts are terrible (so are my movies)

makes it sound like the movies you made are no good. But I've misread I'm sure.

Good luck with finding what you're looking for then.

Ever seen The Little Vampire?  Has a good mix of comedy-drama and mine is somewhat like that, but it is a bit more bittersweet, minus the fangs.  I'll pitch to you:

The Girl of the Lake
Pages 85-90 (currently 59)

Logline: During a family vacation to a lake, a young boy befriends a mysterious girl who lives in the woods and friendship blossoms into an adventure of discovery.

Characters: 9 (including a Golden Retriever, can be changed)
Genre: Family, Comedy, Drama, Mystery
Rating: PG (with one use of "ass" in context to a donkey)
Budget: Low (if you know of a lake/woodland [I'd recommend Bitterroot Range if you're close to Idaho, but anywhere will do], have tents, and a station wagon)

This is probably my eeriest story, but it's 100% family oriented.  It's comedy mixed with drama, a dramedy, with tragedy at its core.  I mentioned "The Little Vampire" so think that, without the fangs.  It's a mystery too, with this girl who "lives in the woods" being at the epicenter of that concept.

It's my first family feature, no cuss words apart from the aforementioned "ass" in relation to a donkey.

Hey Joe,

All my work is terrible, so we have something in common. Maybe we should join forces and make something "Super Terrible".  Hee Hee
