I had this as an idea for a short, but couldn't make it work the way I wanted. Now, it's a poem. I'd say "enjoy", but it's not that kind of poem.

It only hurts,
For just a sec.
I'm not okay,
I am a wreck.

I feel the blood,
Ease down my arm.
I know the pain,
But there's no harm.

I hope you know,
It's all your fault.
Those things you said,
They wouldn't halt.

You called me gay,
And called me fat.
Then called me cunt,
And gutter rat.

Those words do hurt,
They all add up.
So, I go home,
And cut, cut, cut.

I'm sick of life,
I've had enough.
You think that your,
Life is so tough?

Why pick on me?
'Cause I'm simple?
I know that that,
Is all just bull.

You do it so,
You can feel good.
All this pain,
It's understood.

I'm not angry,
You had your say.
Now, leave me be,
And go away.

I'm coming back,
Once and for all.
Can't stop me now,
It's your call.

I don't take things,
Personally.
If you stop now,
I'll leave you be.

But if you don't,
I'll have you know.
You'll be the first,
That has to go.

I wish this pain,
Would go away.
But understand,
I am okay.

Sometimes words rather than images are the best way to convey things. A friend of mine has a 13 year old daughter who regularly cuts. It's driven her mum to her wits end so I know how painful for everyone this type of thing is.

In high school, I had a few friends who did, too. It wasn't one of those things that they would talk about, but you just knew. You just had to do what you could to help, in any way..

Very true.

The thing is, only they will ever truly know why they are doing it. It becomes addictive for them, that supposed release of pressure.

Being there for them, listening and getting professional help (when necessary) is all you can do as an outsider. A little bit of compassion and humanity costs nothing.
