SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Getting to know you, getting to know all about you...  /  Hello fellow writers!

I'm a new comedy writer here at simply scripts. I'm really trying to break into the world of television. Last year I took a couple of UCLA courses, and I recently finished my first spec(posted in the new script section). I'm currently working on an original pilot. I'm finding out that the easy part of writing for television, is writing for television. Getting noticed and breaking in is the hard part, especially when you're living 3,000 miles away from Hollywood. I would love to connect with other writers who are in the business who may have some pointers on how to get noticed. I would also like to connect with people like me who are trying to get noticed so we can complain about how hard it is.  :)

Welcome to SS! There are lots of writers here just like you, so you should have no problem fitting right in.

What would you like us to call you? Ctct0924 doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.  ;D

Hi Cactus and welcome to the SS family.

I've written a bunch of articles on breaking in that have been posted on SS that might you find useful... you can see em at http://www.anthonycawood.co.uk/articles

Cactus? Is it? Seems quite a long way from Ctct0924. Oh well, it's easier to remember. It'll do unless I hear different.

So hello Cactus. I suppose 'welcome' is in order, but frankly I don't need the competition.

Get a script up sometime. I'll have a look at it. If it's any good I have my Radiohead and Smiths at hand.

You'd think you guys were unfamiliar with weird usernames.

I was thinking perhaps it's an acronym for: counter terrorism, or cut the crap, cinnamon toast crunch (cereal), or...
Maybe it's Chris/Christine the comedy tv writer. Do I get a prize? Seems I must be a bit bored right at the moment.

Welcome, anyway. Have fun. Read lots. Look at the Portal and Recent Posts for what's current - comment/review etc. :)

Cataract?

And if it is, will he be able to read this?

Given current odds, you're probably right, but this person could be female, you know?
I'm guessing you might be rather fond of the gals, right Ren?

Especially the blind ones.

It's not my fault blind girls like me. Me and Helen Keller were as tight as erm, something very tight indeed.

I'd like to think they like the sound of my voice. And my soulfulness. The fact is they probably find it a lot harder to just run away.

Hey there and welcome,

I prefer writing TV as well, no comedy though, but hour long dramas and I can hear you about the difficulty with breaking in somewhere. I suggest to also write some shorts and try to get them made, some imdb credits probably don't hurt your chances. Also here on SS, Shooting The Shorts is a great platform to promote your shorts, I just got contacted by a producer who wants to shoot one of my scripts he found on STS, so that's definately something you should think about as well.

Good luck!

"Cactus" here!  ;D Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I'm currently working on a pilot and will post as soon as I'm finished. My Veep spec just got posted last week for anyone interested in giving notes. It's called "Presidential Vacation".

Welcome Cactus.

I look forward to reading your stuff.

Oooh. So it is Cactus. I was going to use an exclamation mark there, but that's what a wanker would do. Yes, I know. It was rather hard to refrain.

You'll be able to read this as well, seeing as you're not called cataract,

I worked on a pilot once. These days I'm far more interested in the air hostesses. If only they would reciprocate. Sadly, their vision is rather good.

Now, I'm off to do some of the stuff I should have done last week. Once I have I may have a look at Presidential Vacation. I don't watch Veep, as my better half took a bizarre dislike to it. I know. I'm just glad it wasn't steak or Kate Winslet.

So glad you didn't use an exclamation mark. Wouldn't want you to lose any SS street cred. I ended up choosing Veep because it was the only show on the list of shows from my TV writing class that I've watched a few times. It's a pretty funny show. Next time your better half isn't around, I'd recommend watching a few episodes-unless of course you're watching something Kate Winslet oriented. I'd be interested to get your take on my script when you have some time. Thanks again!(I couldn't resist)

Greetings, Cactus (exclamation point)

Welcome aboard the S.S. S.S.

As a helpful aid to those who want to read you scripts you can add a link either in your comment or have a standing link to scripts you've written in you signature below.

(See below)

I'd like to read your spec, but clicking on things and typing are so difficult.  If you could make it painfully easy for me to find your script, I'd be happy to read it.

I'll probably find it on my own through my amazing online clicking and typing skills, but a link would make it easier.

Happy writing.

Thanks Jordan! I just updated my signature with a link to the script. Not sure how to make my link all fancy though? This will have to do for now I guess. Thanks again
