It’s not exactly breaking new ground in terms of story and characters but as low budget action thrillers go the throwback/b-movie feel and bare-bones approach to story were enough to keep me entertained.  

The action is on the lean side but nicely handled - tilted toward a less is more ethos.  The dialogue is tight and doesn’t spill into sentimentality as Gibson’s estranged ex-con/biker/alcoholic (insert flaw here) father reconnects with delinquent and on the run daughter Erin Moriarty to protect her from a gang of pursuing cartel members.  

The quieter moments between the two main characters take precedence and help elevate this above what could have been the throwaway crime flick that it probably would’ve been were it not for the quality of the two leads.  

I didn’t go into this with high expectations but I was pleasantly surprised at what I got out of it.  

I dug this one. Bare-bones and entertaining about nails it. A good companion to Don't Breathe, I thought, both unfussy, fun, violent little Christian tales.

Not the best performance from the daughter, but then she's largely a foil for Gibson's redemption. Obviously Gibson can carry a movie himself anyway -- and thank goodness he's finally back -- but nice to see William H. Macy and Michael Parks show up for some flavour, too.

Wasn't a huge fan of it but it wasn't that bad and it didn't go down the most obvious roads these types of movies usually go down. So, that's somewhat of a plus.
