This one's the dark side companion piece to The Fountain. The weirdest thing I've seen with this much money behind it in a while, which is enough for me to recommend it on its own. But it was also good.

So far as I can tell, most in the theatre hated it. Even if the story doesn't do it for you, though, it's a remarkable technical achievement and well worth seeing.

Michelle Pfeiffer is a standout.

I just saw it. I found it a little odd and pretentious (I hate using that word), but it was also very, very well-made, which I supposed is to be expected given the director's filmography. Jennifer Lawrence tends to get on my nerves, but she didn't here. I found her character very sympathetic.

The movie seemed to work for most of the people in my theater, but it was also a very small crowd. There was some uncomfortable laughter. A couple of people were crying or teary-eyed, including my fiance, who was raised to be religious. If you've seen the movie you probably know why.

I don't think I'd watch it again, but I enjoyed the experience, especially the crazy climax.

I didn't like it.

I felt that the concept was okay but it could have been done in a more subtle way. This felt too in your face and over the top.

I read the script instead of seeing the movie.

It got really repetitive past page 95. In fact, I skimmed past that page. But up until that it held my attention. I think there's little story, just people keep invading her house and that doesn't qualify as a well-rounded complete story for me.
On the other hand, I notice I like everything spelled out to me, so that might be just me.

Ditto on pretentious.  Kind of, yeah, I agree with that too.

You know what? I thought this movie could have been more pretentious. I actually didn't think it was pretentious enough. I guess this is coming off very pretentious :)

If you are already going to make a movie such as this, then you should try to make it more skillfully with more layers and subtlety.

The movie Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal that came out a few years ago was a good example of a movie of this type done right. A pretentious, cryptic movie, that needs a lot of attention and studying to figure out.

This movie felt a bit clumsy and over the top.

Finally saw this and have to say I loved it. I probably wouldn't have understood the symbolism if I hadn't read up on it before hand but it didn't take away from the film. Great performances all round.

I'm with Warren, loved it.

It was full of ideas, great visuals, great performance and kept surprising me.

Nice to see a film come out of Hollywood that expects the audience to think!

Watched this yesterday.

I really enjoyed the first half. But, an over the top second half defeated the purpose for me. Religious allegory or not, there was too much chaotic overkill in the denouement for me.

Aranofsky and Lawrence have been nominated for Razzies which is kind of, (though par for the course with a film like this, ) unfair considering Lawrence gave her all with a great performance.

I'm glad I watched this on DVD and not at the cinema.

I wasn't too crazy about this one. Definitely thought it went off the rails in the last quarter. If it's a deep movie, then I guess I'm just stupid.

I could've sworn this was, at least in part, an allegory for social media. Based on the interviews with Aronofsky, it seems like that wasn't on his mind at all when he made the film, which is a shame because it's the only potential allegory I can see that amounts to anything interesting. Otherwise all you're left with either retelling Bible stories for its own sake or in service of the same generic environmentalist message you see in movies all the time. At that point, it's hard not to think of the film as a scam, especially based on its marketing and the cute way it goes about trying to hide things and drop little clues. Nevertheless if you don't think about it too much, it's kind of a fun home invasion flick with that weird, often lurid vibe that Aronofsky excels at.

Just watched this, and I'm still in a wtf did I just see mode...

So I think there are a few themes running through it - one is that Lawrence is Gaia (Mother Earth). The other is death and rebirth (the movie begins and ends with Bardem taking the crystal, the "heart", and living his existence over and over again), and the obvious one is poet as Messiah.

Some things I didn't understand though - one, the bloodstain in the bedroom. All the while I thought it was going to be some portal to something else - another dimension, etc. And even though it reappeared in the 3rd act (does this movie have 3 acts or 2?), I failed to see the significance.

Another is that the baby is born on the floor right over the blood spot - yet nothing is made of it?

And I don't understand the invasion in the 1st half of the movie. Aronofsky spends too long with the family, creates a death that seems to be insignificant to the overall goings-on, unless the theme is out of the death, life happens (Lawrence gets pregnant), and then he settles things down, only to start them all over again with a LIFE OF BRIAN fanaticism gone haywire.

I mean, I get the overall themes, but there's a lot of extras in here that really don't tie back.

Liked it in spots, was disappointed in others, and really watched it almost in fast-forward mode in my mind because I knew that the crazy ending was coming.

Oh and sacrificing and eating a baby - ewww, even to make a point...

This is now streaming on Prime, so I gave it a watch, not reading anything beforehand.

Quite shocked this was released in theaters, under the guise of it being some kind of home invasion movie, as it had absolutely nothing to do with that...or much of anything, actually.

A true WTF 2 hours and it actually upsets me that peeps would praise this in any way, shape, or form.  Because it's from Darren Aronofsky?  Because it has boasts an all star cast?  Because it tries its arse off to be as weird and confusing as possible and that's a good thing, now?

C'mon, people!  Wise up.  This is garbage.  This is blasphemous.  This is not entertainment and those that follow will do their best to praise it, but this emperor clearly is naked as a jaybird, and needs to be called out.
