I couldn't see a review of either of these, so...

Based on the novel by Stephen King and true to the original story Gerald's Game this is well worth catching on Netflix if you love horror/thriller.

'A woman accidentally kills her husband during a kinky game. Handcuffed to her bed with no hope of rescue, she begins hearing voices and seeing strange visions.'

Solid cast: Carla Gugino is always terrific talent imh, as is Bruce Greenwood great at playing both goodies/butter wouldn't melt and baddies/really sinister, and he plays both in this.

I'm becoming a big fan of Mike Flanagan: Occulus, Hush, Before I Wake. I really enjoyed Hush.

This one doesn't disappoint, just the right blend of edge of your seat suspense and a little gore via a particularly effective hands over my eyes scene - I won't reveal and spoil it, this is one of those scary but very credible 'what if/what would you do if you found yourself in this situation' scenario films. Not that I ever would.  : ;D

I also watched another adaptation of Stephen King's novella: A Good Marriage
Not bad. Anthony LaPaglia and Joan Allen. Just not as much meat on the bones in this one but a couple of very creepy moments.

Agree with you on both, but Gerald's Game is head and shoulders above A Good Marriage - which felt a little Hallmarky imho.

Bit of a King renaissance going at the minute... we've also had 11.22.63, The Mist, Dark Tower, IT, 1922 and Mr Mercedes... all in the last two years and the quality has definitely improved from earlier
King adaptations... long may it continue,

I didn't like Gerald's Game.

Didn't see A Good Marriage.

Ditto to all that, Ant, very well summed up. Stephen King would be very pleased I imagine at these latest class productions.

There was something Hallmarky about AGM, you're spot on. Just a bit too 'lite' and sanitised for the subject matter and more suspense and impending danger needed.

P.S. Demento, if you don't like Gerald's Game don't even entertain watching AGM. It'll be sure to disappoint. Having said that I fail to see what you don't like about Gerald's G, cause it more than delivers on the original SK book. Each to their own I suppose but I'm curious...

As a massive fan of Stephen King and having read most of his novels several times I was excited to hear about all the adaptations coming out.

Overall I’ve been less than impressed. Didn’t enjoy the film adaptations of Gerald's Game, A Good Marriage, or 1922.

I did enjoy It but disagreed with some of the changes.

The Dark Tower, being my favourite book series of all time, was destroyed by the film. What an abomination. Trying to fit over 4000 pages into a 90 minute movie, yikes. I know there is talk about adapting book 4 into a standalone series but still. WTF!!

The Mist original film was good for its time but this new series is so cringe worthy it’s hard to watch.

Haven’t watched Mr. Mercedes yet but I think at this point I'm too scared to see anymore of Stephen King's work massacred.

I highly doubt it.

He'll be very pleased with the cash rolling in and the upturn in quality of the adaptations in general...

IT, of course, is now the biggest grossing horror movie of all time, and it's only half done ;-)

No adaptation is going to please everyone, but agree that Dark Tower is a total travesty, the book series deserved so much better!

No doubt ha-ha, and good on him. He will probably also say how happy he is with each adaptation because it would be stupid to trash them while they are still so new and making money. Give it a few years and he might share how he really feels, like his hatred for The Shining adaptation.

Well he hated The Shining so much that he bought the rights back off Kubrick and then made his own version... could definitely see him doing that with Dark Tower!

We can only live in hope.

Gerald's game was definitely a nice surprise.  Very well put together and nicely wrapped up at the end.

A Good Marriage wasn't bad by any means, but agree that it felt very light and lacking.

Also agree that recently, King's works have gotten much better treatments, then they used to get, back in the day.  But, bottom line is that King's novels are usually very difficult to adapt into a single movie, as they are all (mostly, all) very deep and contain big backstories and multiple plotlines.

I was not a fan of It at all, but it's nice to see how well the movie did.

Gerald's Game is dividing opinions here. And I'm definitely in the very disappointed camp. I've just started writing a thriller that takes place in one room for 95% of the time and I'm actually using Gerald's game as a what NOT to do guide. The huge V.O at the end explaining (spoilers) that actually a deformed serial killer just happened to come along ... words can't express how poor I thought that was. And the whole abuse backstory just to end up with the 'oh yeh - I cut myself once flashback - that's what I'll do' ... F me.

Then again I thought it was so abysmal that I fast forwarded a couple of sections in the middle - such as watching the father masturbate behind his daughter's back. So perhaps I missed the point. But I don't think so.

I have never been bothered enough about a film to write a negative review. But I do feel slightly better after getting that off my chest.

Interesting that others liked it though. That's the beauty of film.

Just watched Gerald's Game last night. Was really enjoying it until the very end where the movie completely shits the best in the last 10 minutes. As Anon stated, it was poor, befuddling, and completely unnecessary. Honestly, I was going to give the film an A- or B+ but then the ending happened and it dropped to a C+ at best. I can't remember the last time an ending left me with such a bad taste in my mouth after viewing.

That being said, GG has one of the most disturbing, graphic and vomit inducing visuals I've seen in any movie this year. So kudos for that.

I can see how the last ten minutes might rankle with some. If you've read the book it rounds off a few unanswered questions. As a film though the P.S. is not really needed and could potentially ruin the feel of what's gone on before.

I'm a bit lazy and find it time consuming to write long reviews, which is why I usually keep things very short.

I just thought nothing in the movie really worked. It didn't flow well for me. Over the years I've really come to look for rhythm and structure in movies. I found myself being annoyed with this film early on and things didn't get better as it kept moving forward. I also didn't like how the premise was set up.

I was actually looking forward to it, even though I didn't like any of the directors previous movies with the exception of Oculus, which I thought was good.

I didn't like it either and I liked the book. Not my favorite by far, but I did like it. The movie was boring and I caught myself fast forwarding.
