https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/r-lee-ermey-dies-actor-232811224.htmlLegendary character actor R. Lee Ermey -- a real-life Marine best known for his Military roles, such as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket and the green toy Sarge from Toy Story -- has died. He was 74 and suffered pneumonia.
Non-Military credits include a sheriff in Se7en, a sheriff in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 remake and 2006 prequel, and, curiously, a warden on SpongeBob.
I didn't like his politics, but he seemed like a nice guy when the cameras stopped rolling. That being said, I wouldn't wanna sit down for dinner with the Hartman character, lol!
The opportunity has never presented itself for me to see his signature film, but I am a Kubrick fan; I've seen four of his movies: Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining.
RIP Gunnery Sgt. Ermey. (He was given an honorary promotion.)

A great performance in Full Metal Jacket. The archetypical drill instructor in movies (Sorry Mr 'Heartbreak Ridge' Eastwood.

Ermey's performance was superior, but to be fair they weren't doing the same thing. Gunny Highway was a platoon sergeant fixing broken Marines, not a drill instructor forging Marines out of squishy civilians.

It's such a long time since I've seen Heartbreak Ridge, I didn't realise. Man, I love 70/80s Eastwood films. And of course 60s.

I still haven't seen Louis Gosset Jr. in an Officer and a Gentlemen. I think he won an Oscar for that.
