That is what you’re supposed to do. You must have had your name inside the document somewhere (perhaps right after the word “by” on the title page?).

Some people have their email on the title page which tells us who they are.

Haven't reasd the Happy Days yet, but I'll get to it. Seeing how the trend in the OWCs are going, I expect Fonz to kill baby sharks after jumping them  ;D

Wow. Somehow, I'm already halfway done. I still have A LOT of shows to get re/acquainted with. I thought I'd watch the half-hour shows first so I could get this done faster.

So far, I have liked all but two entries. And of all the shows I've sampled, the only one I didn't like was The Lone Ranger. Too slow, too boring. In serious need of a reboot. Too bad that reboot didn't deliver and, imo, was equally as boring as the 1949 pilot.

But overall, pretty good selection this month.

I’m a little more than halfway done. Some impressive entries so far.  I will say I’m disappointed in the lack of Comments so far.  Don’t know if the page count is scaring readers off but you would think that at least all the participants would be commenting as well. Maybe some of the newbies don’t know about the quid pro quo system of reviews here.

Also, when does this end? I haven’t seen a countdown clock for reviews to be in so I’m guessing it goes through next week?

I'm actually surprised I'm this far along, considering...

1. I didn't know until Monday that the Blumhouse Halloween trailer would be dropping this Friday [June 8], with epic goodies and extras every day in the interim. As a result, Twitter and the Halloween message boards are in a frenzy. In fact, the official thread on OHMB balloons to at least 20 pages every day.

2. The special-effects makeup game show Face Off came back  this week for its (supposedly) final season.

So it's been a busy week. I'm so grateful we have two weeks to re/acquaint ourselves and then read hundreds of pages of scripts. If we only had one week, I probably would have withdrawn by now because I'm so tied up. :D

For the most part, I've been impressed with the posts and the overall quality of reviews. I think the comments from the last couple OWC's and WT about being swayed by previous reviews was taken to heart. I think most are commenting before reading other posts.

Hmm, possibly there's also little traffic because any talk here in the "chat" would end with breadcrumbs since every entry somehow has a individual topic this time... so we cannot really communicate and exchange about the writing process, concepts and so on.

I just hope that some writers aren't sad because of a negative critique and bail early from the challenge in front of these masses to read.

I know it's hard to get around the extended page count but just feel a bit demoralised about the lack of reads this time around after putting something together. We've all got real life to contend with so obviously this screenplay scrimmage isn't, and certainly shouldn't be, a priority but I kinda was hoping for a little bit more on the reading front.

Maybe it'll all come good in the end but it just sucks a little knowing you've done the legwork for everyone else, fingers crossed an extended deadline will help.

I used to be so much more active on SS and wrote dozens of reviews and did script exchanges almost constantly.  Unfortunately, real life got in the way and I've been out of it for quite a long time.  Also, there were some real trolls on these boards for years and years that I just couldn't handle anymore, but they all seemed to have finally disappeared.  Thank God.   I've just recently done my first script swap on SS in probably six years.  I can say this.  The quality of writers and work has gone up dramatically since I first joined the site.

Nice to know that you're back on board and enjoying it again. The main point above is come the OWCs, all participants are supposed to at least try and review each other's work, nominally 5 scripts to qualify for voting has been done previously (if memory serves me well).

Im guessing it's your first challenge (the naming of the author on your script gave it away), but the reviewing part I'd say is more important than the writing, as you learn more and see the spread and diversity of work. I think yours has got about 8 different reviewers thus far, maybe share the love.

I don't know why I'm bothering, but yeah, I'm rewriting my entry a little. Not a ton, because I'm generally satisfied with it. Reading a recent script in the OWC helped with my decision.

Yep, I'm with you Darren. I set my eyes on one particular piece of work that even though I didn't like the overall storyline, it was that good for technical bits and writing style I'm definitely bookmarking it for a pilfering (learning and adoption) session.

So, that's them all done for myself. Loads of variety and lots of really good work, will be really interested to see what comes out on top. Looks like it's currently between a handful of goodies.

Things I noticed/liked:

1. Thank God someone else (Hawkeye) was getting a bit miffed with all the child murder!!! It seemed to stop after a while, but then I wanted to murder some of the characters in other scripts so it may have left a mark.

2. Chris Bodily. Whoever you are, mate, those reviews of yours are amazing, never change.

3. I guess we'll never know how many dead bodies Potsie has seen, especially if he's been hanging around with the Fonz...

4. Lone ranger heros who ride motorcycles should never adopt a Labrador puppy, it's not fair and it'll never work out from a scale perspective. If they really insist on a puppy a Maltese could work, or maybe a miniature dachshund. Avoid a great Dane.

I just got back from a 4-day camping trip that last week was largely devoted to prepping for. I'm ready to dive in to reading and commenting more this week.

I was in Vegas from very early Thursday.  Just got back late yesterday.

I did not enter, but I was going to try and read and comment on as many as I could, but with such a pathetic turnout, in terms of peeps who did enter, but decided not to read and comment on the other entries, I think I'm done.

Very, very happy I did not enter, as I would have been livid with the lack of comments.  

Just finished my last review. A lot of good writing on display here. Great efforts and congrats to all for entering. I’m now going to go hide under a rock in dismay at how bad my entry was in comparison.  Ha ha!  Just kidding. I’m going to just drink a lot instead.

No way!!! Has it been a whole year already since the last Vegas trip? You'll be sad to know that Michael Mann never optioned my "Jeff in Vegas" script from last year, sadly not even a sniff from anyone for some reason...

I believe to be fair, when saying that I don't review Dexter, Miami Vice, and Gomer Pyle, because the respective writers, who revealed themselves, didn't review other scripts so far. And I just see those have an equal number of reviews as others, which is wrong, imo. Wake up, folks…

Otherwise, I never had a challenge with so many satisfying scripts. Originally, I am an assh**** regarding my usual evaluation -- 30 scripts = 2-3 recommends -- here, this time, it's simple, it's going to rain recommends from my side... great scripts

I perused most of these scripts just to check out the competition but haven't read them to completion or taken careful notes.  I guess since I've been disqualified I quit caring as much but I'll be sure to post my thoughts on the scripts in the next couple days.

You don't always have to be specific. You can always say why you liked a script or disliked a script. Favorite/least favorite characters or scenes, and, as far as this OWC goes, a comparison bewtween the "new re-imagined" fan script exerciser (a point, by the way, a notice seveal readers of most scripts forget) as compared to the source.

It is unfortunate that some peeps read responses before reviewing and have the comments, good or bad, influence their own subjective views. Or don't comment in fear that it might.

And, as mentioned, if a number of folks see a story or character problem, there is nothing wrong with you confirming it. Or, if you disagree, debunking it.  If anyone cares to read reviews  that they already commented on, would anyone be stunned to find that at least half of the reads mention, say, the same spelling errors? You'd think by X time the point was made to the writer, but there it is again in a new comment. Nobody gives it another thought. Maybe someone's review missed a typo and you didn't.


There's always something you can add, subtract, give an opinion on.

BTW, There is nothing...ahemmmm...wrong....with...commenting on your own script, just don't get too inside baseball (*i.e. 'wonderful insight' saying things only the scribe would know)  and don't reveal yourself. No long essays, I mean, you know, if you are really worried about revealing yourself or just want to mess with folks. Just don't make yours the only comment you give.

The reviewing part? Not necessarily. Some of us review even though we don't have an entry. I reviewed a few this time around that sparked my interest. When I enter I review them all or at least review most/read all, otherwise I don't feel qualified to vote, although the voting ballot often includes a 'did not read' option on individual entries.

It's good to partake and get into the spirit of the challenge.

Woho! Thanks, Don. With more time to review, I will most definitely review all of them! Higher quality reviews even. I think we should always do the challenge this way. Two weeks to write. Maybe not 24-page limit, but definitely more time to review. It's better this way. I sensed better quality scripts so far. The two-weeks thing is working.

I don’t see this two week thing becoming a trend. It was only turned into two weeks because the challenge parameters seemed to warrant a higher page count. Still, the challenges benefit from tighter restrictions and lower page counts. These things shouldn’t drag on like this, imo. I think with lower page count, 10 max, and a set list of criteria, gives most writers the opportunity to shine within the framework. And may the best writer win. And I only say this because I seem to write better within that construct. Maybe others think the same. I don’t know. Just my two cents.

Yes, let's keep the OWC as the One-Week Challenge. I don't mind a little extra time to read, especially if there are a lot of entries, but the fun is in the time crunch.

Having said that, a TDC (Ten-Day Challenge) would allow a second weekend for people who come up with an idea late or can't bang out 8 or 10 pages in time for the Friday cutoff.

My uneducated opinion is that it dilutes the excitement that is experienced when the contest first opens.  It'll be a month from when the contest first opened and I finding myself losing interest in the outcome. Maybe that's just me.  It could also be I know I'm not going to win so it doesn't matter to me if the results are announced next week or two months from now.  Okay, I'll crawl back under my rock now.

Come on guys, get out from under that rock there! Sure, it's not as rapid fire and manic as usual but it's still the OWC, or maybe TWC this time.

Rather than being a great night down the boozer where it starts off with best intentions, you have one too many, a few fights kick off here or there and someone wanders off with an empty pint glass (the mug) at the end, this has more of a laid back cocktail bar feel to it. I think there's been far less scrapping than usual so that may be part of why there's a relaxed, less sparky feel to it all.

That's not to say we need to get the gloves off to make it more fun as it's been fun enough already, in my modest opinion...

Lest anyone thinks I’m being negative towards SS, I want to clarify that I love everything about SS and the fact that it has opened a ton of doors for me and introduced me to a lot of wonderful people (and a couple of a-holes, but that’s to be expected no matter where you park your caboose).  I loved this challenge and I really got into it.  My only qualm is the timing aspect — the last challenge seemed to go on for three months, and this one is going to hit a month before completion. I'm fairly new here, and apparently every contest I've witnessed (January TWC, March Madness, Writer's Tournament, May "O"WC) has been an extended-release formula. The first actual OWC I see here will probably seem frenetic by comparison.

Hey, is that the same rock people use to avoid spoilers ahead of major releases? I want to keep track of where that rock is for future reference.

Sorry for my lack of activity, been having some health issues. Feeling pretty good now, so I'll be downloading some of these scripts and reading them at work tonight. I'll give some reviews as soon as I get home. Any suggestions?

I've forwarded the ballot to Dan to send out.  In additional to writers, he may include those non-participants who have been reading and commenting.

Writers who chose not to be anonymous have not been included in the ballot.

Tradition holds that one does not vote for ones self

We are just going for Writer's Choice.

As for the "non-reviewers"  Please note, some folks wait until after the event to post comments and he/she believes comments unduly influence voters.

I agree this has dragged on a long time.  The Two Weeks was an anomaly, but we committed to the concept and once committed we thought we should allow enough time to do it right.  The next OWC will be an One Week Challenge.

Voted. Only two scripts rose to four star level (out of 5 stars), and three more getting 3 stars or 3 1/2. I looked mostly for cohesiveness, characterization and story, regardless of whether I was familiar with the source material or not. Fun challenge, and thankful for the extra time. Thanks Don and Dan!

I had two at excellent and three at VG (or four even, but three for sure). Quite a few goods.

Good challenge, regardless of the timescale and apparent lack of reviews. They were generally long scripts so I do understand that it'll have been tricky due to real world issues for everyone to go round all the houses, still there's a couple of days left so fingers crossed a few more reviewers pile in.

A couple of excellent, a couple of very good, shall be interested to see what comes out on top.

Ballots are in and there doesn't seem to be a lot of guessing going on so I'm just going to confess: I wrote"Branded". Here are my lessons learned:
- I should never have titled the episode The Lone Ranger. It confused the hell out of people and there were enough clues therein to elude to the similarities.
- I should have explained that perhaps McCord found the pup abandoned in the desert and at the end given it to Vasquez in the hospital since they got on so we'll.
- I should have just revealed that it was C-4 explosive they were smuggling instead of leaving it a cliffhanger.
- I should have described better that McCord was found outside the walls of the Outpost, therefore adding to the premise that he was perceived as a coward.
- Last, General Reed is the reason for the massacre at Bitter Creek and the season storyarc.

Clever reason (would never have thought of that), but no. Not mine. I had never even seen the show before. My script, however, does contain a creative license spelling of a word. Creative license is one thing (e.g. Mortal Kombat), but reading about how many (surely unintentional)misspellings Quantum had, I couldn't stomach it.

I barely slogged through Monster, and I had to bail on Becker (a show I quite like) because the writing/English was so bad. No credible producer would read a script with a misspelled title unless it was creative license. I couldn't begin to guess who wrote Quantum.

I know you didn't write Happy Days because you didn't seem to know who Hank Aaron was. Hammerin' Hank is a very famous (retired) batter. He played with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (which is perfect for Happy Days) as well as the Milwaukee Brewers (also perfect for Happy Days).



He's about as famous as Babe Ruth. I'd love to know who wrote that one. It was clever.

I have no idea who wrote The Lone Ranger (NOT Branded), but surely they did it because Knight Rider was already taken. That's an example of a reboot that's too different.

My best guess on any of them would be Darren for VR Troopers. He seems to love B movies and the writer intentionally wrote some of the monsters as looking "cheesy" and "cheap." But I don't know about the typos.

Not that I know. I was just putting feelers out there. I've been very busy for the last year, so I haven't really participated much here. It just seemed to me that there's been an OWC going on for the last few months and I was just curious if there was a sense of OWC fatigue, or if people were still game. Lol.  ;D

I think if there is fatigue it’s because the contests are spilling into one another because of how long it’s been taking to wrap each one up. Maybe get the current one completed as soon as possible , then have the July one the last two weeks of next month.  Just my two cents.

Man, we are easy! The body is not cold yet, we're jumping to another offer.

Regular OWC!  PLEASE!!!  1 week to write, 1 week to read and vote, a few days to savor my big win.
