I spotted a trailer for this and it looked like the type of film I’d enjoy so checked it out on Netflix. Directed by McG, it started off okay. A bunch of underdog kids go to summer camp and encounter the usual stuff there. What really worked for me was the comedy aspects. It certainly was aimed more at kids but it was kind of working for me as well early on. Then the aliens invade and it goes full-on ID4 mode.

When the main alien attacks the kids, they use cheap looking CGI combined with some Claymation and practical FX. It’s so bad. It really detracts from the action. The acting also suffers during dramatic or action scenes. The kids are fine with the comedy, not so good with everything else. Mixing comedy with drama and suspense is difficult to pull off. Rim of the World fails quite spectacularly here.

This movie probably looked great in the script. It follows all the formulas to the letter and borrows heavily from pretty much every alien invasion movie. It is self-aware of this so doubles-down and mentions ID4, Star Wars and a whole bunch of pop culture references in the dialogue.  

As the movie progresses it actually gets worse. For example, one kid becomes quite badly injured. In several scenes, he’s incapacitated but in others, he’s fine and able to continue as normal.  When you find out what the kids have to do to ‘stop’ the aliens, the reason is even lamer than the virus from ID4.

I would suggest avoiding unless you want to study how all the right elements of a movie and following a forumla can be horribly mashed together to produce an abomination.

I actually really enjoyed his last flick "The Babysitter". Thought this looked interesting. I'll give it a watch and see what I think.

I was referring to Charlie's Angels, Terminator Salvation and the inimitably terrible This Means War. He's the classic "all style, no substance" director for hire.

And yes, given I've seen 3 of his films, I clearly didn't heed my own finger wagging advice.

Completely agree on McG being all style and no substance. Still, I'd check out The Babysitter. I thought it was a ton of fun.
