As per title - I know people write spec TV pilots for writing samples or even for pitching, but is it even worth writing a miniseries pilot on spec? Is that a thing that’s done?

I’ve written one on spec, although nothing has come of it yet.

On the plus side it’s the most fun I’ve had writing anything.

This.

If you find it creatively rewarding, it's worth writing. My favorite things I've ever written are the first two episodes (so far) of a series that will probably never be read by anyone, let alone produced. But I laugh out loud as I'm writing it, I enjoy spending time with my oddball characters, and it lets me indulge n my weird, quirky, horror/sci-fi/humor side. That alone makes it worth writing, to me.

Though to be clear, any writing you do that helps you improve your craft is worth it, whether anyone else reads it or not.
