If something, such as a story or joke, has a sting in the/its tail, it has a surprising or unpleasant part that only becomes clear at the end. Just think of when you're watching a Horror, or equivalent Thriller, ScFi, and something entirely unexpected, horrifying or shocking happens. Maybe it appears with a happy ending but then there's a big unforeseen catch at the end.
Just wow us, frighten us etc., with your story. You'll be right.
