Recent events have shown us the world can be a scary place, and we are but bit-players in an increasingly unpredictable and sometimes terrifying world...

But who doesn’t love a few jump-scares of the celluloid kind, especially from the comfort of your own lounge-chair?

This month’s theme is: Future Shock a term coined by futurist, Alvin Toffler.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/30/books/alvin-toffler-author-of-future-shock-dies-at-87.html

Your mission, should you accept it, is to tell a story of how you envisage an ever changing world in the future.

The genre is Horror, SciFi.

The focus of your story should primarily be on horror and your ability to scare your audience with your future vision taking in consideration technologies, existing and emerging.

The SciFi component should be based on current and futuristic concepts of science and technology.

Examples: Virtual Reality, AI, Robotics, Nanotechnology, Drones, Spying Smart Home Devices, Smart phones, Webcam, Driverless Cars, Cloning, Biotech & Gene therapy,  Recognition Software, cryogenics, personal microchip implants, 3Dprinters, etcetera.

Time Period: Your script should be set in the near future. It should not exceed fifty years and preferably be set in your own foreseeable life-time.

Budget: For production purposes, ideally your script should be self-contained with minimal cast, no huge set pieces, not too ambitious SFX, if any.

Horror micro-short films are very popular with filmmakers so keep this in mind when writing.

So...

Write a 2 to 6 page (not including the title page) properly formatted, short script.

Theme: Future Shock
Genre: Horror SciFi
Challenge: Stories inspired by a scary future. Micro-horror shorts with a view to being budget-friendly.

There will be a review page emailed to you for you to score the scripts you read. Please only give scores to scripts that you have read. Please do not rate scripts in your review.

Schedule:

Friday 5/29 - Theme and Genre release
Friday 6/5 - Scripts due 11:59 pm edt
Saturday 6/6 - Noon edt Scripts Posted
Friday 6/12 - Writers Choice votes due

This isn't a contest - it's a challenge. There are no official prizes.

You may submit more than one script but it's better to write one GREAT script than two or three mediocre ones. You may also have a writing partner.

You can revise your script as many times as you wish up until the deadline.

Do not put your real name on your script; this is an anonymous challenge. However, please use your real name when submitting your script.

After the challenge closes you can either have your script removed or resubmit your script with your name on it.

Participants must read and comment/review in the discussion board at least five other scripts submitted.

Please put ©2020 on your title page.

Submit your two to six page script, anonymously to simplyscripts.com/owc by midnight June 5th midnight edt.

Any questions about the challenge, post them here.

There will be a review page emailed to you for you to score the scripts you read. Please only give scores to scripts that you have read. Please do not rate scripts in your review.

Edit: Details of deadline will be confirmed by Don.

Okay, it's not me...

Don't worry, we'll get it sorted. If no one else can post on this thread there must be a technical problem (kinda fitting for the challenge) and once the cats stop chasing Don, I'm sure he'll come to our rescue.

Haha! I'm sure you can do better than that, Stevie.

Part of the challenge is legitimate scares. Pisser implies comedy which this is not, so sorry, no.

Thanks for that - one to ponder

These last two OWC’s Remind me of the old movie poet style comps, which I like.

Best of luck to all.

I would expect quite a few entries for this one.

There was one like this on Tournament. Sci-fi plus horror. People were complaining. This one is even stricter - you added future to this.
I'll see if I'll think up something but not likely. To me hte combination is not easy although I'm a fan of Black Mirror. But it's hard to write something like Black Mirror. The third seasons flopped in my opinion btw.

ANd they don't even have horror in every episode.

However it's going to be fun to read. Interesting to see what people come up with.

Oh, completely different from Movie Poet. See, we do a six page maximum, rather than a 5 page max.  And you only have a week, not a month.

And the 'official name' of the One Week Challenge is Moving Picture Verse Writertm

Very different.

Sunday morning, and I'm up.

Kham, throw ideas around. You don't have to copy Black Mirror. And you're right, they're not all horror Eps anyway.
Those links are for inspiration only.

You also don't need to go big with your idea.

You could have a very simple idea about a smart home device listening in to a couple's conversation, mix in some infidelity, some mounting paranoia, leading to horror/scares. Or a baby monitor. Or, you could have a home science experiment gone wrong ala The Fly. You could have a stalker story using a Drone. An engineered virus idea might be topical, a vaccine trial idea?

As long as there are some scares and there's a technical component and it's set sometime in the future you're good to go.

Zack's recent short Horror picked up so quickly on SS recently, reminded me that starting out filmmakers love to produce horror.

I originally had the idea of RomanticSciFi in the vein of Eternal Sunshine and Her, but thought the scary element might open up more ideas.

I think there are potentially lots of ideas here but like I said they don't have to be big ideas.

I'm the worst at writing horror.  The scary part is how bad it is.  I'll try to come up with something. Maybe Alexa and Siri hunting each other down in cyberspace in a winner take all for Queen of the Internet.

Now that I think about it -- no one can have that idea!  It's mine, you hear?  All mine!

Also, notice my new avatar?  Mine got here fast!  Thanks again, Don!

Some of my scripts:

Bounty (TV Pilot) -- Top 1% of discoverable screenplays on Coverfly
I'll Be Seeing You (short) - OWC winner
The Gambler (short) - OWC winner
Skip (short) - filmed
Country Road 12 (short) - filmed
The Family Man (short) - filmed
The Journeyers (feature) - optioned

Somehow I forgot that the OWC opened on Friday. Just checked in... "Oh, yeah." Lost two days of thinking time.

If something pops for me, I'll be in. But...

Really good idea, though.

Who says my character ascribes to a certain sex...

Seriously though, it’s a bit of a struggle. I have some concepts, but not stories.

This could be a rushed job, something I’m not good at. But let’s hope something comes together.

I'm definitely struggling. The horror part is killing me. I don't think any of my ideas could be classified as horror.

So, in rereading the parameters, am I correct that the script must contain both horror and syfy?  As in the syfy element must take on something horrific?

Also, the parameters state that the story should take place within each of our expected lifespans, but no more than 50 years - so, for some of us...a..older folks, we're probably looking at something within 20 years or so, max?

Could the script take place later this year?

Horror. SciFi. Within our lifetime.

It's a very narrow window we're trying to hit here. It's a great challenge. But, I haven't cracked it, yet.

And, I'm doubting that I will, what with other things to squeeze in this week.

I'll keep churning though. I'm not out until I'm out.

I'm flexible on your definition of 'horror'.
In my mind it doesn't necessarily equate to gore, but if your story has gory aspects, that's fine.

The focus is on scaring your audience.

There are lots of definitions of horror but there are common characteristics. Here's one definition.

The best horror stories share at least five elements in common: They explore 'malevolent' or 'wicked' characters, deeds or phenomena. They arouse feelings of fear, shock or disgust as well as the sense of the uncanny – things are not what they seem. There is a heightened sense of the unknown and/or mysterious.

The SciFi relates to the tech gadget or future device or invention sabotaging,  or maybe malfunctioning, creating horror in the life of your character. Maybe you have a jealous robot companion turning rogue.  You're not limited to the examples I put up.

Jeff, yes, it can be near future if you like.

Does this help clarify things?

Not sure I'll be in on this one - just got a big chore from the wife to convert about 15 DVDs worth of old home movies into MP4 files - at least that's technology-related and for me personally it is a horror story. Will have to see how the week goes.

That's great, Zack.

Is your SciFi hangup one you can share - need more clarification? Or will it blow your cover?

I had a writer friend read my draft. He was confused.

Writing sci-fi and trying to show and not tell is a tough one. I've got my work cut out here but I'll do my best. I will not be surprised though if most of the comments on mine are, "I just don't get it?"

I wrote a page and a half and looked at it and thought:  This will get viscerated, even with a rewrite.  So it's back to the drawing board.  Or writing board.  Or whatever.

Some of my scripts:

Bounty (TV Pilot) -- Top 1% of discoverable screenplays on Coverfly
I'll Be Seeing You (short) - OWC winner
The Gambler (short) - OWC winner
Skip (short) - filmed
Country Road 12 (short) - filmed
The Family Man (short) - filmed
The Journeyers (feature) - optioned

Gary, the problem is if you write something and don't recognise it's a bit crap.
I've sure done that before.

And Mark, (like John said) maybe it's 'good confusing'? A second opinion perhaps? I don't mean me, btw.

It's pretty hard sometimes to objectively judge our own work.
A certain look from my other half is often enough for me to go back to square-one.

Keep at it, guys! Still three whole days to go.

Oh, trust me, I know that look very well...but I rarely go back to square one.  I sure wish I did with The Ballad of Pun Li and the one that followed about some airline that I wrote completely baked and drunk in an hour.

Sometimes, she's a genius!  Usually, I am the genius.

Oof, I'm only just learning about this now. I've been out of the loop for a while, but didn't expect another OWC so soon after the last one (that I also missed completely).

Hmm. I owe four shorts for production that I'm a bit stuck on. Maybe a couple of days coming up with something for this is the change of pace I need. I'll put my thinking cap on and see if anything bubbles up from the depths of my tired mind.

It was the 2019 writer's challenge.  I think maybe I put the wrong title on it...You Never Know What You'll Get.  No clue where that title even came from.  The airline one was Paradise Airlines.

Funny thing is...I reread Pun Li.  I'm going to make the necessary changes, fix the glaring mistakes, and I actually think it will make sense and be quite funny, but most found it horribly sexist, racist, and some other things.

I'm an idiot...

I had another writer/director read it and he got it no problem.

However, I have written another draft to make it clearer as I know some people try to speed read every entry in an hour.

Mine will be the one with the massive electronic post-it notes that says, "SHE'S REALLY A ROBOT!"

Not really and no robots in my screenplay. Or is there??

Great to see Owen and Rene joining the throng too.
Throng?
Well, here's hoping for a small crowd anyway.
Looking forward to the reads.

I’ll be roasted over this one, like never before.

Christ it’s got to improve for me to enter, but I have a day left

I have an idea, but not sure it will work. Also have a lot on, under, and around my plate so it will have to be as short as I think it’ll be to happen at all.

Feature-length scripts:
Who Wants to Be a Princess? (Family)
Glass House (Horror anthology)

TV pilots:
"Kord" (Fantasy)
"Mal Suerte" (Superhero)

Additional scripts are listed here.

Mine is a true stinker.  Might even rival Jeff's Pun Li script.  If you smell something bad when you open the PDF, you'll know it's mine. I know, I'm outing myself, but it'll be too obvious anyway.

The field just narrowed for a much prized mug...

Still one day to go to pull off that Opus magnum!

Jeff, throw the kids in the pool with Terri.
Bill, you got it.
Dave, put down those DVDs.
Zack, Blondie is coming after you. Scary thought right there.

Mark, yay!
Gary, yay!

Kham, I'm pretty sure there's a bigger field than that. Plus there are always the lurkers... I mean, quiet achievers.
Not entering myself. I think if you run it you have an unfair advantage of knowing ahead what it is.

I also second what Owen said.

If you don’t enter, you can’t be nasty - my new rule

And I need it

This will be my least prepared script  and I’m not even sure it  meets the criteria and that’s not a good thing with the readers!

But it’s all I got under the circumstances

Hey ho, nice to be a part of it.

I haven’t entered yet but hope to polish this turd just a little bit more before doing so.

And to think I hoped to write two scriptS at the beginning Of the week

Thanks Libby and Don

I have words on the page.

Not enough of them, and some of them don't even go together... but, I'm looking at progress.

I even have an opening slug that Jeff will hate. So, I'm getting closer.

No name this time, or at least a fake name submitted? Anonymous challenge once again.

Yes, I made sure to put a fake name on it. Last time I misunderstood the "anonymous" part.

Very true.  All week, no real idea, no motivation.  My bad for sure.

Or...is this all a ruse?

Entered.

alas not my finest hour. Things didn’t work out. but I am pleased I kept going and have thrown my dice onto the table, so to speak

This was an interesting challenge.

I had quite a few ‘concepts’ but as I’ve said before, couldn’t get them into a short story

I think there could be some really cool ideas in this and I look forward to read the others.

If I were a film maker I would be reviewing these scripts closely

There could be a golden nugget in there

What?
I should have checked in earlier. Like a few days earlier. I wasn't expecting a OWC so soon after the virus challenge. Whazzat?! FIVE HOURS LEFT?? Looks like I'm out of this one.

I do have a sci-fi idea, one I been kicking around for some time, but I don't think it'll be limited to ten pages or less, and I'm sure as hell know I can't come up with a shotgun script in five hours. It also might not seen as 'horror', but maybe more of a panic attack...

Hmmm, still haven't thought of a concept. If I do write anything by deadline, it's gonna be TIGHT...

I really thought I wasn't going to be able to finish writing. All the interruptions and work stuff and family stuff and I was ready to throw in the towel three hours ago. And then, like some Christmas miracle, it all stopped and I was able to focus on finishing and just hit the submit button.

See y'all on the other side.

I'll be in.

No idea what I have.

I think there's something in there... but, I'm pretty sure this isn't it.

Feel pretty good to just get something in. Had nothing til this morning. And, I had quite a bit to do today outside of this.

Not gonna be able to meet deadline, too much other stuff going and sci-fi's not really my thing. I will be reading and commenting, though!

Impressive

I always need longer, never been one for these last minute scripts.

One OWC I had a script, I think it was the grieving spell, and found out as I went to enter that I was two pages too long. I then had to under take a quick and ugly butchering of my script. Actually proved to be a goood lesson in just what can be removed.

Well done to all the others who have thrown together a last minute entry.

I had a few idea, which I will share once the scripts are revealed, but couldn’t get them together.

Cool, scripts are up

One thing worth remembering, I think, is that they are meant to easy, low-ish budget productions

Happy reading

Safe to assume we're using standard scoring here, and not the extended scoring of some past challenges?
