Posting this for Warren since I got the maths wrong:
Challenge: Write a mockumentary.
Genre: Comedy… but any extra genres are allowed as long as the script has comedic undertones.
Script length: 5 to 10 pages
Characters: Unlimited
Criteria: There is no restrictive criteria for this challenge as the challenge itself is to write a mockumentary; that alone will be tough as this genre is quiet unique and comes with its own quirks.
Scripts due to SimplyScripts.com/owc on Friday 20th 13:00 AEST (Friday 20th 11:00 am EST)
+++++ THE USUAL:
This isn't a contest - it's a challenge. There are no official prizes.
You can revise your script as many times as you wish up until the deadline.
Do not put your real name(s) on your script; this is an anonymous challenge. However, please use your real name(s) when submitting your script.
After the challenge closes you can either have your script removed or resubmit your script with your name on it.
(Don's rule) Participants must read and comment/review in the discussion board at least 10 other scripts submitted or your work will be removed (no harm, no foul. I understand that live gets in the way.)
Funny! Dena and I were just talking this morning about the Charlotte 48hr challenge we're writing for tonight. We both agreed that we'll be okay as long as the director doesn't draw rockumentary!!!

Just think this needs highlighting.
For sure, does not need to be full blown comedy... think sci-fi, western, horror, essentially any story that can be documented by someone else. I think a lot of the comedy comes from the awkwardness of the situations.

How did that go for you two? I did the Cleveland 48 three weeks ago. We got Science Fiction. Felt bad for the people who got western/musical. I can write western just nowhere to film it or costumes for the cast. Musical? They can keep my money.
After that aside, mockumentary always sounded fun. I might give this one a try if I come up with an idea.

We got thriller/suspense which both Dena and I were VERY happy about, but the director took an hour before he told us what he drew and while we were waiting Dena got really sick, so I ended up staying up until 2am writing six pages. Very stressful. She's still sick, but hopefully will be fine soon. The film? Who knows. We'll see how that turns out.
I'm tossing my hat in the ring here though. I did tinker with some ideas, just in case we'd get mockumentary.
PS: I see my autocorrect changed it to rockumentary when I obviously meant mockumentary...
Hmmmmm..... maybe, just maybe, have an idea for this one... we shall see...

Nearly missed this as my day job is super busy at the minute, but a comedic mockumentary is well outside of my comfort zone - just as I like my challenges
Haven't been around for a couple of months due to work and personal issues and during that time I've been watching a load of Parks and Recreation so I am definitely out of this one. Way too influenced by the plethora of characters that show provided. Good luck to those who do enter and kudos for taking on such a difficult challenge, I will absolutely reading all of them.
If at first you don't succeed........bribe someone.

It's a super fun genre to write in, give it a crack!

Sounds like you are in the strongest position to compete :p
What a great idea! I'd love to take part in this, just so busy with work and I've a big deadline I've got to hit for Friday so I may not have chance but I'll see.

after such long writing rest, it's really hard. I don't know whether to explain the setting each time, show the props as they come into view, or earlier... so many questions.
And I know proper writing is important. Or is it. I forgot even that
I’m in. I don’t think I even remember the last OWC I entered. I bet it’s over a year. Seems like I wrote one last spring maybe. About the pandemic in 2020.

Meanwhile, I had the idea fully fleshed in my head on Sunday but didn't have time to write. I was supposed to have time, but I had to postpone.
Believe it or not I forgot half of the idea, or more how to go about it - and I had it in my head. And now it's 3 days and 16 hours left to a deadline on that clock - are we submitting on Australian time or something?

Hi, Kham, yes this is running on AEST.
But... it still means everyone has the exact same amount of time to write.
Going to have to bail. Right now dealing with a hand injury that only allows me to hunt and peck at the keyboard.
Isn’t this why God gave us noses? As backup for hand injuries?

Paul, Dave, James... I'd love to see all of you in this. All of you are really strong comedy writers.
Zack, give us a gory-as-hell horror mockumentary!
Just got back from a long road trip. Really tired. On the other hand, I don’t have a mockumentory in my portfolio…

Alright, I've got a VERY rough draft finished. It's NOT good. Lol. But I love the idea. Got tomorrow off, so let's see if I can't polish this turd up a bit. Prepare yourselves, people. I'll be in.

In a way, yes. But the amount of time remains the same
Yes, it's the same, I'm not saying it's not. But people expect it on Friday night as it usually is, so my assumption is some probably check on it Friday after 12.
I saw it earlier on Friday, but I could get to thinking about it only after the workday anyway. Although starting to think about it right after work works for me.
Hmm. I remember doing the challenge from Baku Azerbaijan. I probably had to set it on my time then.
I actually ran out of steam to finish it and thinking my idea is very stupid. I'll write for the challenge if anything new comes to mind. But I'll read! these should be a lot of fun

Don't give up, Kham! Embrace the stupid! That's what I do.
OOOOOPPPPPSSSS totally mis-read the countdown, seems to say there's 21 hours left and I haven't started yet!
What sort of deadline is this!
Oh, crap. Same. What the heck -- not sure I can finish in time. Maybe I'll just submit what I've written and let everyone DQ me.

A mocumentary is supposed to be stupid so it sounds promising.
Well, I've submitted. If it's the last thing I ever write, I can at least say I gave it a half-hearted effort.

I feel pretty good about mine, which probably means it will get slaughtered.
This feels like the majority of challenges I enter. The ones I love people hate and the ones I'm very unsure about are generally the ones people react positively to.
Oh man, I think I'm really pushing it with my take on a mockumentary. But I'm hoping readers will agree that I at least made a real attempt to bring something new to the table for a change. Got about half a page to shave off, then I'll be ready to submit this monster. Lol
I was almost in this one, got to eight pages before I decided I — didn’t have enough time/story was rushed/ending wasn’t coming to me. Maybe it’s something I’ll revisit at a later time. It was about a self proclaimed masturbating champion (14 times a day) and Twitter sensation was was having a documentary made about his exploits by a Nigerian student filmmaker, who claimed he was the Nigerian Steven Spielberg.
For another time. But good luck to everyone who enters!

Wow! That is so weird! Exact same story as mine, except my character masturbates fifteen times per day.
I'm actually kind of excited to enter this time. Haven't really written anything or taken part in much of anything since the pandemic started, but then all of a sudden something happened and I've written almost five pages/day for the last ten days or so. I'm hoping this will continue.

Aha! Well, good luck with your script.
I was on the same roll as you seem to be on right now. But currently, my output has gone kaput.
I'm soooo curious to see who made it this round. Are there some peeps keeping quiet and not letting on? Otherwise, I'm not sure there's a huge bunch of entries.

I didn't make it. Didn't even have time to try. Just fell on the wrong week... which really bums me because I love this challenge.
I'll be reading.

Sorry, work has been hell this week, so I didn't get around to writing anything and I so wanted to.
I came up with a mockumentary idea around 20 years ago about a documentary crew following a crazy guy called Kane Van Vordenburg who believed he was a vampire hunter. As the documentary progressed it gradually became apparent he was legit and vampires were real. This was ages before What We Do In Shadows but had similar vibes. Even though it's now not an original concept at all, I was planning on revisiting the idea for this challenge, but didn't get chance. Ah well, it wasn't meant to be.
Best of luck with all who entered.

Finished. Easy since there were only nine entries. A little disappointed with that number, but those that did take part did a great job, IMO. I liked all of them, but had some trouble following a couple. Easy fixes though if the writers want to.

I read them all. It was interesting to see the differing approaches to a mocumentary. We were all clearly challenged by this one. It felt like we had a challenging time combining good story WITH the mocumentary aspect. But I was amazed by the creativity on display.
An interesting assortment of topics: Serial killing; Cannibalism; Unjust racial bias; Cornholing; Lesbian Turtles; and Genocide survival (just to mention a few).
