I think it's important for writers to note that Don has specified:

*Can be children’s fable, myth, poem, or song.

Not just horror slant on Fairy Tale.

Not that I'm saying I'm in or not, but I will read regardless.

Theme is fabulous. So many possibilities. I wonder if half the ordeal won't be just picking one.  In any case, I think I'm down, even just adapting something straight and milking the horror elements. Will come out my way no matter what I do.

I can't help but think of the movie Shrek when I see all of these.  That doesn't help me think of horror.  Crap!     I bet there will be some good ones this time around as well.

Jeff,

No. Just, no. No Shrek. Here is something to clear the snot out of your head, Chpped Off Hands and The Red Shoes.

As James has pointed out, you can do a straight adaptation of any one of a number of children's stories that would make someone wet his/her pants or, as Libby has pointed out, you can take something out of R.L. Stevenson and with a twist or two (or not) can be pretty scary.

Fantasy draft? fantasy draft?

Ha!  No, I meant that, in Shrek, the fairy tale creatures all showed up at his swamp.  That's all.  The rules of the OWC are clear to me.  Just thought it was funny.  No, I'm good with it even though I'm not great with horror.  That won't stop me though.  Don't worry about me, I'm not as dumb as I look!

I'm in the middle of a short script, going to finish that first then look at this.

Great idea for a theme though. I'll get my thinking hat on.

Then why submit it, Ben? You've a whole week to tinker with it, work the story, fix it up. Just seems to me you're jumping the gun a little.

I was thinking I can re-submit if I decide to rewrite before the week is up.

But I generally need longer than a week to stew on something enough. I'm relatively happy w/ it anyway.

Got a big clean-up job this weekend after the hurricane, two short films to make sure they get finished with editing, two feature re-writes and two features to read....but hell, I'm a sucker for the October, especially, OWC. If I write something, it will probably be like I did things in the old days, written on Friday night.

Good theme, but like the Urban Legend one...really, REALLY hard to come up with something new.

One thing I've learnt though is that one of the my favourite horror stories, The Man Who Drew Cats by Michael Marshall Smith, which won the British Fantasy Award...was just a rip off of the Boy who Drew Cats...an old Japanese fairy tale.

A lot of the takes I think would require more that ten pages.
There was one that I did recall from my youth because the story was siple enough, and I got the feeling that that story will be chosen by many.

I'll give it a go as well as another tale, decide which one I like better and submit the better of the two.

How or why anyone would be done and submitted already is pure stupidity.

I've finished my short script. It's been AGES since I've written one and I'm so rusty, I was thinking of submitting it to SS to get some feedback, is that still ongoing or frozen while the OWC is on?

Now onto the OWC. I've started to look through the list of Fairy Tales and there's SO MANY! Plus, they all seem to originally be horror stories anyway!

For once I'm spoiled for choice and at a loss because of this lol!

I really liked that one "The Boy who Drew Cats" when I went through the list but decided to leave it alone as I thought there would be many who liked this one too.

I'm not on the coast, so it wasn't too bad. Got LOTS of trees though, so a BIG clean-up was needed. Was doing a little thinking while doing that. Got my story figured. Wrote most of it while having a cold one afterwards. Then, a friend told me I was losing my touch. That the old me would've finished by now...so, I did!

Yes...you are good.

Best advice is not to ask questions.  Interpret it your way.  Take a story, poem, whatever and add your own twist.

That's what I'm doing, at least.

You are not limited to the list. Is not Peter Cottontail a children's story?

Co'mon, Stevie!

Lol I just twigged about this, Don. Look, I will look thru the lists again. I want to do a proper horror one lol

Still at a loss for inspiration?

http://io9.gizmodo.com/5914283/10-creepy-details-glossed-over-by-modern-versions-of-fairy-tales

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/12/the-real-story-behind-eve_n_4239730.html

That should be enough inspiration, Stevie, for your Peter Cottontail Bunnyman.

Anyway, as for me, I've got a question about the rating. How far can I take this? Can it be gory?

Thanks.

There are three ratings: Children, Young Adult and Adult (and all that it implies).

Best advice is not to ask questions.  Interpret it your way.  Take a story, poem, whatever and add your own twist.

Hey, Jeff.

This is what I did with the last OWC and you were one of the people that told me I was out of bounds haha.

That's why I thought I'd check.

Thanks, Don and Jeff

Warren, yeah, I hear ya, but the last OWC had only 1 parameter, and it was very clear, and you didn't honor that 1 parameter.  But...you did write a good script, though.

Prussian - it says

Retell your favorite Fairy Tale as a horror story

I think any re-telling could be in any period of time you want it to be, current, ancient history, etc - but it's gotta be Horror...

That's my understanding anyway.

Prussian, greetings. Here in the US, we watch American football all day on Sunday. I'm sure no one saw your question earlier. There are only a handful of actives here now anyway. It wasn't personal. Now good luck with your horrific fairytale. Get to work, my old friend!

Great theme. Actually a german domain, so no excuses to not participate for me. I just got not much time at the moment. Whatever, I try and only hear to Don's advice "your favorite". Is there something about modernization of those tales? I wouldn't think so, it's not mentioned, so it should be authentic I believe.... another question mark here

Best of luck to all

"based on" so if you want to modernize it, that is fine.

I've spent the afternoon making some huge changes to the site and also Sunday afternoon in America is usually spent watching Football (brown, oval shaped football).

Considering most fairy tales are already horrific wouldn't a retelling make your story full of fluffy clouds, bright rainbows and  pink unicorns.

Completed my first draft. It's 11 pages (12, if you include the title page)? Can scripts go a hair beyond the 10-page limit, or do we have to trim?

Thanks.

NO! I did once and was SLAMMED for it! People didn't want to read it and many refused to because it went over 10 pages.

That's what I was thinking, too.

I had to find a different source for my script when all I saw on Don's link were tales of incest, cannibalism, and human trafficking.

Thanks Brothers Grimm!

Check out that story I mentioned. It's a really good version of it.

I tried to purchase it but something is wrong with my kindle. Will try again - I'm curious to read it. Unless it's a total rip off and no addition at the end. But let's hope it's not. Thanks.

Just pumped out 4 pages of something. I'm definetly rusty, haven't wrote in a long time and my dialogue's a little on the nose and I'm struggling to make that transition from a thriller to a horror right now. I'm sure I'll get there though. It's an unconventional fable/ tale but hell, I like writing it.

Just trimmed up my script. Actually, "trim" is too delicate a word. I Jason'd the hell out of this script to get it to 10 pages and still make sense.

Second draft. A very impressive second draft, but then again, I always revise as I write, anyway. This may be the version I submit, unless I can think of anything to tweak or polish.

I think this is the first OWC where I've had so much to choose from, it's genuinely stumped me.

Finally found a fairy tale which sparked an idea. I wonder how close to the complete tale we have to be? Setting it in modern times seems to be OK from previous responses but I'll only be utilizing certain elements from the original story. It will be interesting to see if readers cry foul or fair play.

Now I've got to write it, I've got one hour spare Wednesday, two on Thursday and one on Friday so this is going to be a rough one....but that's how I like it, oooh Matron!

I'm back in the game. Trying to get Gary Rademan to jump in too.

Almost done my script...which is so awful Jeff will stop reading before he even logs into Simplyscripts. He might even order a drone strike on the SS server to ensure its annihilation. He might just call Michael out of retirement in order to perform an exorcism on it! I need Sandra back. She was the only one who liked my stuff. Even she might support a drone strike though. We're supposed to improve as writers, but I seem to be missing the bus.

I never fully understood her stories, but there was something poetic in them.

I can't write shorts. I can't come up with simple stories. It actually takes a lot of talent to come up with a simple set up, conflict, resolution. I always add too many complications, even though I aim for simple.

Are people genuinely struggling with this one? Or is it all just a ploy to throw everyone off haha.

Maybe it’s just me, and maybe it’s just that this played straight into my genre and the way my sick mind works but I honestly wish I could have entered more scripts, I reckon I could have pumped out at least 3 for this challenge.

Then again, maybe I wrote the biggest hunk of junk that will get ripped when the comments start, but I’m feeling good about it.

Picked my fairy tale. Not sure if it's the best choice, but sorting through so many options was an ordeal, so I went with the one that felt the most workable in a week's time. Mapped out something simple and direct (hopefully). Gonna start writing tonight. Couldn't be worse than my entry for the April challenge.

Got my 'Eureka' moment... ask my 12 year old daughter lol
Me  "I need a twist on a fairytale"
Daughter "What if you... "
Me " I like it... now go to bed"
Daughter "Do I get credit?"
Me  "Nope, I'll wake you up if I'm stuck"

And so it begins

Draft 3, and I think I'm ready. This was more of a trim than the Friday the 13th of a rewrite/"trim" I did for Draft 2.

Draft 3 is quite polished, flows well, and amps up the horror and tension.

Yeah, I'm ready.

Good luck to everybody!

Finished mine. To quote Hillary, it's deplorable. Will submit later...I have to go back first and break some rules, screw up some slugs or something. My favorite part.

I've found it near impossible to come up with anything.

I can't see an angle on any of them that brings something new or worthwhile.

I'm out. I'll still read, though.

Welcome back, Kevin.  I've got to be about as rusty as they come, with only 1 short script written in the last year and a half.

I've had to try and explain a $3,500 business expense report, including 2 days of golf, which somehow got approved, so now I'm ready to try and write.  Problem is, the fairy tale I chose seems to require alot more than 10 pages, so I may be fucked.

BUT,as promised, shit or not, I will be entering something.

That was my big problem, as usual...too many scenes, too many elements, too complicated a story.

But glad to be back in the game.

Now, to go add some unfilmable for you...

Probably the best way to go, inside out. I just always add too much.

I start with a simple scenario, but that I say, hmm, we need to care about this character, we need to see this character in action, or maybe she needs a flaw she has to work out, or maybe there's a bond between two characters that is critical and has to be showed.

I start out with the wizard telling Dorothy she needs to get the witch's broom...and then I end up adding munchkins and tornadoes and Aunty Emms. Next thing you know I have a 10 page feature!

Well, things are turning out quite well, and I'm just about done...and it looks like I will not have a problem with the 10 page max...I hope.

I'm already happy with it, so we'll just have to wait and see what the gallows pole thinks about it.

I should be done in the next hour and then I'll let it sit for the night and see how it looks tomorrow,  Plenty of time for once, so no last minute rush to get it in...hopefully.

I'm looking forward to a BIG turnout!!

When I write off a character the story gets in the way and doesn't make sense at times.
When the story makes sense - the character is bland, I'm not invested much and I can't expect my reader to like it if the script lacks soul.
But some people do just fine.

And something tells me you'll do well too)

Is there a minimum for this? I didn't get that part. 6 pages is not the minimum, right?

Mark, crank out a page, close your eyes, open them and voila you're on page 7. Things like that happen.

I'm just glad Don said he's a little loose on his interpretation of the challenge!  Not finished yet but I've at least started and have somewhat of a story in mind.  Getting it in the ten page count will be tough but we'll see.  Good luck to all!

I can write the reviews for mine:

"Where's the horror?"

"I saw it coming a mile away."

"I saw this before in..."

"Page one, I'm out. No soup for you. Next!"

I'll quote one of my infamous script's dialogue, which will most likely be very close to the reviews I receive this time around...

TOMMY
Is it any good?

ANGEL
Any good? It's fucking great! It's
the best damn script I've ever read.
It's flawless. It will completely
redefine the way scripts are written
and judged. It gave me goose bumps.

Tommy looks on in awe.

TOMMY
No shit, huh? Are those goose bumps,
or are your nipples just rock hard?

I couldn't be arsed to enter this hallowed annual event, because I've run out of Bunnyman ideas, and this challenge was too hard for this old bloke.  And, I'm in training to go to Everest Base Camp next year, so I've given up on writing and the only thing I can pick up is my 5 pound dumbbell, and that's a bugger in itself.

only with an OWC...

@ It's meant in a sense that you do what is possible you cannot do what is impossible in the OWC

Oh, but I've seen some manage that.
And sometimes they rewrite that perfect script for the worse!

Did you write something for this OWC, Alex?

im so rusty i had to check out certain format issues - or may be that's age for you

anyway, a final plea - be gentle, we did our best with the resources available

i think this theme whilst appearing easy is in fact quite tricky to pull off something good.

time will tell

all the best

It is a tough one, which is why that Aussie arse, Stevie, isn't entering.  He needs lots of limitations, as his mind is about as creative as a turnip.

For me, limitations do exactly that - limit my creative thinking.

I still haven't entered mine, but will shortly.  I HATE loglines!!!  Argh!!

Yes, I got an entry this time. Struggled a lot with my written English as usual. I like the meaning of my script, but when it comes to the rest, the total package: characters, story, structure, genre – no clue how it will be received. But I done definitely worse before, I feel.

In general, I agree that some scripts from the challenges are fabulous. But how many are that out of the usual stack of 40? Imo there are not more than one, two or maybe three that I'd call perfect or better said "ready".  Sometimes none.

And I even think for those super talented short writers, we definitely got some around here, I tend to believe even for those it is hit and miss. Perhaps some expectations toward ourselves and each other are too high. On the other side, what we demand to happen in one week makes it all so funnily ironic and irrational Pure high voltage writing

Got caught up in some family business. Haven't written a word past the first slug. Stupid perhaps, but I think I'm still gonna give it a shot, even though the quality may suffer as a result of the time constraint. If it's total shit, I won't submit. Will just have to see...

Nah. What's the worst that could happen? Mine stinks, but I am already using an idea from it in a novel I am working on. These exercises usually pay off in some way. Stay in the game, K!

THat's so true! I based a feature on my last short. And I used the feedback for the feature - somehow it appeared relevant.

Nah, mine just stinks and won't see the light of day again - it certainly won't be filmed...ever.

But it was nice to write and take part. And actually that means a lot to me now. I am grateful for the OWC's

Looking forward to the reads, like the faithful do, and the others forget.

Lord, lord, that was hard. I'm whipped.

I don't know whether I pulled it off. Fairy tales etc. can be so abstract, which makes it hard to translate one into a concrete version that makes any sense. But it was a great challenge. Glad I gave it a shot.

I can't look at this anymore. It might be really good or absolutely terrible, I can't tell at this point. I'll give it another forty minutes then I'm turning it in and getting wasted.

When I was sleeping, suddenly it dawned on me to check to see if all of the characters were CAPPED in their first appearances; as I'd been trimming and cutting scenes, some of those intros got lost in translation, but I made sure to copy-paste the deleted stuff into a separate script/scratch pad so that I can re-add it if need be.

Turns out, one character (a minor one, I might add) slipped by me. But the character is so minor and takes up so little screen time (and I was so absorbed in the story) that my radar didn't catch it.

All taken care of in Draft 4. This takes care of everything, formatting-wise. The story (and my take on it) works great for me, but let's see how it goes.

Count me out of this one.

Will try to put it up after the challenge as I like the first draft and the story, but there's not enough time for it to achieve any other feedback than: what the holy heck is this! in its current state of evolution.

I will read some though, so they'd better be good.

"Career" Highlights
-2, count em, 2 credits on my IMDB page.
-One time a fairly prominent producer e-mailed me back.
-I have made more than $1000 with my writing!
-I've won 2 mugs... and a thong.  (polaroids of me in thong available for $10 through PM)

Someone tossed a killer (pun) idea on my desk, and I just had to roll with it... I  burned the midnight oil on this one to make sure it wasn't notoriously confusing... we'll see.

Initially, I was trying to script the classic Log Driver's Waltz vignette into a horror tale, but couldn't bring myself to disgrace it... the Canucks would have ostracized me. Ever see the cleats those Log drivers wear...? You could rip someone's face clean off with those feckers; a Doctor, a Merchant, a Lawyer... just saying.

Best of luck everyone. Excited for the carnage

Yep, I was the same way.  Working night shift all week and had somewhat of a story.  Didn't think I would make it, but let the fingers fly and submitted at the last minute.  I tried to check it over.  We'll see.

Can't wait to read some of these.  Should be good.

I hear you, dude, and normally I'd say you're right. To be fair, it's not like I don't have other things going on. Have been out of town with the fam most of this week. The circumstances are not all leisurely in nature. Got something of a TCB situation going on.

I knowww... Unlike you, Rick.   Funny, I thought 'bummer' was such an Aussie word... Seems not.

Speaking of potty mouths my Mum thinks it's perfectly acceptable in mixed company to say:  'pig's bum' and just plain old 'pigs'.  She thinks it's a ladylike way of swearing. Cracks me up.

Anyway, awe, gonna miss my 'Rick critique' - maybe when I post it up later.

Btw, I notice Jeff didn't give me any encouragement. I think he knows serious competition when he sees it.

End of ramble.

Looking forward to seeing what all you guys come up with.

P.S. Rick, I've never heard of The Log Driver's Waltz - looked it up. Now that would have been very interesting as horror. Just saying...

I've had an email from Don saying my entry has been received, so there's no turning back now.

For those bowing out because they think their first draft isn't good enough, guess what...these are pretty much all vomit drafts. I started mine Thursday night, finished it last night and rushed like hell with it. That's the idea - they are rough and full of issues! But you get some great feedback so you can figure out what works and what needs work, then you use that feedback to put together a decent, proper first draft. It's FREE feedback!

Get your arse submitting now!

While I agree with the basics of what you're saying, Mark, an OWC entry should still be a decent effort imh.

If I'm not reasonably happy with something myself, and there's no satisfactory ending, then there's no way it's going public.

I wrote my last OWC in one sitting right to the deadline and I was fine with issues I knew it had. That said, I knew it had a lot going for it. Not often I say that.

There are completed first drafts and then there are incomplete jumbled messes with some flashes of brilliance sprinkled throughout.

Good on you for revving up the group though!

I'm not aiming to win anything, so it's basically just interesting to see what people think about my story idea. I see these OWCs as welcome distractions where you can just fire up a blank sheet and write the next best thing that comes to your mind. I've never put in more than a few hours into any of my OWC submissions, because I think its more like an exercise instead of a competition.

I try and put in a bit more effort but I applaud the attitude

If you can try, take part and read, but don't worry about the outcome, that's healthy. I also like the sanity check on new ideas which can then use elsewhere

Theses day I feel I've got a better grip on whether my script will appeal - this one is fine but won't excite some and does have weaknesses. Acceptable but not great - I'll take that these days

I'm with LC. Deffinitely - if you know your entry sucks and you're sure that's what you'll get what's the use. Especially if you don't fell like rewrite it ever.

That's what happened to me last OWC and I just discarded the thing.

So, they are coming at us in couple of hours! I'm excited to read the fairy tales. I saw one in my dream - it was about my daughter. She left for school but then in a moment I saw her in her bed. I said I heard her going out and she agreed that she was at school. It was weird to ask her - who she was. She said she didn't know. Possibly something bad. And I thought that they'll deem me crazy at the police besides I couldn't report my own daughter. And I just went to the kitchen to make dinner.

I'm excited to read the fairy tales. I saw one in my dream...

Something I read about the origin of fairy tales said they started out as dreams. The most compelling were retold over generations before ever being written down. That would explain the weird imagery and symbolism in some.

Lol, that just sounds nasty. I remember my Grandma on my Mom's side, was this little ol' lady about 4' 5" with a thick Scottish accent that would let go some of the most derogatory racial slurs you'd ever heard... funny to say the least.

I'm about 10 scripts in now and it seems the common theme is the real lack of horror at this point.

I'm really hoping things pick up.

8 scripts in for me, and the quality is shockingly LOW.

I have to agree. Although I've only read 4 and I'm usually not the bad guy, but 3 of them are pretty brutal to get through and the 4th read like poetry(obviously talented though)

Wouldn't it be fun to to guess which script belongs to whom?

That should be the competition IMO :p

It is a part of it. 'Who wrote what...' Speculation usually happens round the end of read/reviews. I think I guessed two last time. Harder than you might think.

I've got a few guesses but I don't think I've been active here long enough to know everyone's voice.

Anyway, mine covers a lot of recurring themes so it should be easy to guess if you've read any of my stuff.

I haven't read anything yet, but can someone recommend a good horror script?

I've never read a script in my life that actually scared me.  I legit don't even know how that would have to be written.  I'm not much of a horror guy and feel like that genre is pretty broad these days, so i really don't even know what qualifies at this point.

Just skimming threads it seems like every reply is mentioning how the scripts aren't really "horror," and i really want to read a classic example of something "horrific."

I'd list my "work" here, but I don't know how to hyperlink.

@vc_wg - because I crave attention

I've read about 7 so far and I'm done for the day. I have to spread these out otherwise I go script crazy.

Out of the 7 I've read 2 were excellent and rec's for me, here's hoping I find some more gems like these.

I've decided to wait for my five assigned scripts. I'll give those close attention/feedback. After that, I'll do as many as I can.
Henry

P.S. I've read a dozen or so but commented on only the first two or three. I didn't say much beyond "too many mistakes." However, if those two or three are among my assigned five, I'll revisit and expand.

15 down for me.  I really, REALLY tried to stay in on every script, but alas, I'm a mere mortal and have not been able to on every one.

A few decent efforts so far, mostly very poor, though.

My apologies to those I have shunned.

And I’m done reading.

Congrats and good luck to everyone that entered.

I was hoping to read a few more recommends but probably only ended up with about 3 out of the lot.

Oh and I commented on mine because I finished so early, don’t want anyone picking it. James seems to have a knack for fishing out my writing.

I don't think anyone would mind at all, an extra review is always more than welcome... good or bad. If memory serves me, it's been two years to the day (or week-ish) since you've been around? You should have entered, it's all the rage, lol.

I'm terrible at guessing who wrote what. I just figured you'd do horror for the last one and there were only like three horror scripts. Now there's 30+ so I have no chance.

But I dare Khamanna to guess mine again. Bring it.

Well, I'm not sure I'll get to all the entries - it's 37 of them. But I can base my guess on a title and say it's Kiler Weed. It would be fun if it was yours - that would mean I guessed it out without opening it.

I better read to make sure I'm not too off.

I try to do 2 or 3 a day. Will be traveling to Detroit tomorrow, so none done that day. I pick from page 2 of the list. When it gets near the end, if there is a script getting a lot of attention and I haven't reviewed it, I'll do that one. So I should end up reading about 25.

My goal is to try evaluate based on the competency of the writing and the storytelling. By competency, I mean does the writer know what she's doing, is the story clear and easy to follow.

Arbitrary rules that are only insisted in the amateur ranks are not a factor for me. This is not computer code, nor can it be.

Also, OWC is a perfect place for experimentation, and experimentation is a great way to develop voice. An example here is the script someone wrote in rhyme, even the action lines. OWC's are the perfect place for that kind of thing.

Which one? I want to read it. Checked One Two - thought it's that one, but no, doesn't look like it.
I read scripts that rhymed twice in my life and loved them very much - both of them.

Yeah, two years would be about right. All the rage or not, I think I stick to the gentler side until I get back up to scratch - I was just starting to get the hang of the craft when I had to put it aside.

Good luck to all who entered and may you come out the other side unscathed - probably not though...

Alice in Underland.

Obviously writing action lines in rhyme is kind of wasted effort, I suppose, but the writer really took the effort. Tales guts, a spirit of exploration, boldness. The storytelling world...film, scriptwriting, prose...is built on that.

I agree that the rhyming one is a fun read and extremely creative but I still don't think it qualifies as a script. The action is the information the director and actors will use to transfer your script to the screen, it's not a poetry contest. It just has no place in the action. In the dialogue, go nuts, rhyme all you want.

Alice in Underland. Check it out. No idea who the writer is.

Obviously rhyming is kind of meaningless in action lines, but the writer really took the time, and it shows a spirit of exploration, boldness, creativy. The storytelling world is built on that. Storytelling is not computer code.

You are right Kevin. The OWC is the perfect place to flex your writing muscles and try new ideas and work on your voice and let your creativity flourish. It used to be a fun exercise in writing. Now you get "I didn't like this. PASS!". It's all about winning a mug now.

I'll add one more gentle comment, Pia. I think it's better to read 10 scripts and give a useful review than to read all 35 and give a one or to line comment. The scripts are not boxes to be checked off one's reading list. The writer took the time to write it, to just skim read and then leave a couple of lines of comment almost seems disrespectful to the writing process.

I totally agree Kevin. I don't know why it has become a "requirement" to read ALL the scripts and you can tell when people are just rushing through the read too. Often misinterpreting the meaning of the script or its intent.

I suggested he/she use a Narrator for part of it at least, esp at the opening. It was well thought out, is really entertaining, and adds to the Fairy Tale.

This is on top of Kev's comment btw - the Alice script.

I agree about the 'checklist comment' too. Read all if you can, (to vote on writer's choice) but well thought out comments on those you choose to review is better than treating them like a chore.

I think I've entered and read every script for the last five or six OWCs...

Sometimes I write a lot, highlight things I think could be worked on etc, sometimes I just give a few lines - not because I'm disrespecting the writer, it's usually because I don't have anything useful to add or the script didn't grab me.

If anyone wants me to add to my comments after the OWC then I'm more than happy to.

But given that some people do see it as a competition with the grail of a mug at the end of it, then I'd rather vote knowing I've missed nothing.

I started out reading the fairy tale the story is based on, but then changed it up. Too time consuming to read all the fairy tales, I've taken to just reading the loglines and basing my reviews, as always, on originality and, to a lesser extent, formatting. Now, they both go hand in hand, and of course if something is so ill-formatted, it will lose points no matter how good the story is.

My comment was not directed at anyone.

Yes, it's possible for a short comment to be useful to the writer.

What I am advocating is a spirit of trying to be helpful to the writer. That's more the purpose than the voting. If I read a script that I can't find anything useful to say, I don't say anything. No one needs to know I opened it.

I attempt to read each and every script, and I attempt to give as much meaningful and helpful commentary as I can.  You may not like what you get from me, but it's often more than anyone else provides.

I'm also reading (or attempting to read) the source material, so I can judge on how well the script follows/works/etc.

Apparently, 1 person was unhappy with my comments and thought I missed what their script was really about.  Personally, I disagree, and plan on going back and privately commenting to them.

Actually, I have no problem with someone reading a few pages, stopping, and pointing out the specific reasons for stopping. The writer can find that useful. As long as your reviews provide those specifics, and you(Jeff) usually or always do, I think it's potentially very useful. To me, it's all about helping the writer, not the voting of mug benefits. If the reviewer is harsh, but takes the time to be specific, it's hopefully helpful.

Is it just me or are the reads a bit slower than normal?

Last OWC I thought there was a good turn out.

Anyway, back to reading. Looking after a sick child today so I have good motivation

Is it just me or are the reads a bit slower than normal?

Last OWC I thought there was a good turn out.

Anyway, back to reading. Looking after a sick child today so I have good motivation

Totally agree!  Reads seem to be very slow...or read turnout is very poor.

I have only 3 more to go...I think.

It could be people misinterpreting the 'read next 5 on the list' message as a max rather than a minimum...

I've read 17. And I may not make it through them all. Jeff... has there been any scripts that you vaguely liked at all? Just wondering.

So, Jeff -- Which one is yours? I've read at least some of each and not one was free of the kinds of mistakes you would not make. Or did you throw in some orphans to throw us off the track (as you said you did with brackets in an earlier OWC)?

I can't out myself, bro, but I don't see any "mistakes" in the one I wrote...I really don't, as I had plenty of time to read it numerous times.

I wish I could say that peeps love it, but that is not the case, and actually, it's had very few comments so far.

I've been swamped so I'm just now going to start my reads!  I want to try to get to all of them and not just the five assigned.  I think Don put that there just so any newbies in here would at least read that many.  I like to try to read all of them and comment.

My entry suffered from the following:
1. I'm still not that good.
2. I suck at writing horror - so far.
3. Too ambitious for the time I had to write it.
4. I'm still not that good.
5. Didn't get the rewrites it needed before submitting.
6. I'm still not that good.

I think that covers my "excuses" for my entry.  I liked the idea, but just couldn't put it all together and really only had about 2 days to write, but the idea stirred in the old noggin' for about 3 days.

My Scripts:
SHORTS
Bed Bugs
I Got The Shaft
No Clowning Around
Fool's Gold
Five Days for Redemption

TELEVISION
Father, Forgive Me
Sheriff of Nowhere

I've had great comments but only a handful of reviews. I wonder if indeed some are taking the review 5 scripts as a rule rather than I guide?

I've only read a few, but I don't have a script in the game.

As far as the OWC goes in general, I think Don is slowly working on getting the reading and voting, more and more like the way it was at MoviePoet. It was the best and most fair system I've seen. Genius really.

Only read six so far, haven't been at home until today. Will read more later today and tomorrow. Surprised to see mine isn't being slashed so far. Even Jeff's grades are not F+ this time, which I take as a compliment.

Enchanted Quill is my favorite so far, followed by Ugly Beautiful.

I read all the scripts. There were some very interesting ones (THe Curse of the BLue Light was my favourite) but all the gore got tedious after a while.

However, this contest has inspired me. I love the fairy tale theme, and I hope to provide some short fairy tale scripts of my own soon...

... it does seem a little light on the reviews this round. I've had some interesting feedback, so... it's all good.

Anyway, between a home reno', work, and my kids extracurricular activities, I've only been able to really review in the late evenings this time around. Got about 15 in so far and will try to bang off as many as possible before voting...

A thought...

Ever get one of those OWC itches, where you want to wade into the discussion of your script?

Sure you do, like most of the time. Writers are human.

Anyway, I have one of those now. It's not bad, and I don't disagree with whats said, which sounds strange if I'm writing this, but I have this itch to make a point. I suppose what I'm thinking is , if I was able to make that point, would all the others still say the same thing? Useful debate.

It's  Nothing big, but there is a time when we all, I include myself in this, tend to follow a theme.

I'm not the best reviewer, I just keep it simple and try to focus on gut feel. As the reviews go on I make sure I read nobody else's til I have read the script, and started my review. Then I see what others have said. I am mindful not to be persuaded otherwise, but we can all pick up useful issues to think about from others.

I still think the OWC is the best around and part of this is the passion felt by the writer as the reviews are seen. It keep us engaged.

This OWC feel's similar to others, but in some ways gentler. Yes, we all get a bad review, but I've seen worse OWC's for this.

Got a couple more to do, but almost there.

Isn't it great that we can take part?

My scripts  HERE

The Elevator Most Belonging To Alice - Semi Final Bluecat, Runner Up Nashville
Inner Journey - Page Awards Finalist - Bluecat semi final

I'm burning myself out on these. I'm trying to spend a lot of time on some but probably just wasting hours on something that ends up being hypercritical and will make the person hate me. I've read them all now but don't know if I'm gonna do that many more comments. I gotta find a way to be more efficient.

I applaud those who spend lot of time on each, but for me, it's not necessary. But I accept we are all different.

I bet if you were thrown into a major competition they wouldn't spend much time.

At the end of the read, does it work? does it wow? does it surprise?

Overall the reads have increased and it seems to be normal, so far. And all for free!

I've read seven. For some reason, I've opted to read a few more and post all the reviews at once, wham-bam. I can't remember ever doing this before.

Pleased to say all the entries I've read have featured a strong story, or at least concept. The executions themselves have been mixed, as is natural for the OWC. I am somewhat disappointed by the over-reliance on gore and the relative lack of scares or atmosphere, especially considering the majority of gore set pieces thus far have struck me as pretty been-there/done-that. I didn't enter, so another two or three and I'm spent. Hoping to see something more fully realized on the horror front.

Or you could just appreciate the fact that someone has taken their valuable time to read your script and comment on it regardless of how big or small the comment, whether they got the point of your script or whether it has sufficiently stroked your ego.

It's been a couple years since I've done an OWC, but it seems to me the quality has improved based on the modest sample I've read. I have not found anything close to a stinker yet. Each one has had some merit.

First couple of OWC's I did. I was itching for the names to be announced so I could wade in there, fists flying!

I thought if I explained, if I showed them how silly they were being they would change their minds and love my script. Turns out I was wrong and readers are human as well. Now I just let those type of comment go but pay attention if several reviewers mention similar things

Reading turnout is incredibly poor.

12-21 reads with almost a full week gone.  That is pathetic.

As usual, it seems most who enter don't contribute at all, while others read the bare minimum.

It's quite sad, really.

I’m probably not gonna’ be able to comment on all of them this round either but, I figure if I stay about 10 reviews ahead on the board than I have on my own (script) thread, it’ll be a fair trade in terms of participation. I'll read them all though, just to give a fair advantage to all the scripts when voting.

Read and reviewed them all, just voted. 3 Recommends and 7 considers. I won't name them yet as don't want to influence in any way those who are still reading but I had a blast reading all of them. Even those I passed on had something about them, there was a lot of imagination and creativity. I'd even go as far and say this OWC was 'magical'.

That's me done too.

I hate horror and slasher nonsense, but you know what? That was pretty good fun, and most importantly there was yet again another load of good and varied scripts.

Well done to all the writers, well done to all the reader's of multiple scripts and thanks again Don for setting this up. Sometimes in life you need a distraction, and this has certainly been a fun one

I've been extremely sick the past two days so my reading and commenting has been slow going.  Feeling a bit better today.  I hope to get most of the reading finished today so I can vote and comment on all of them.

I don't get sick much, but when I do...

I've read some pretty good ones so far.  Having a ball with this OWC

I only had time to read about half. At this point, I want to make sure I didn't miss any of the top contenders for the cup. So if people can list their contenders, I'd be grateful, so I can go and read them if I have not. I'm not going to read them all.

My recommends are:
Pinocchio
Ugly Beautiful
No End of Wolves
and either Would Not Tell a Lie or The Final Curse
-don't remember - I think I decided to give a consider to one of these in the end. Not sure. Might be I had five recommends. Both are definitely worthy.

It's out of 26 that I read.

Nightshade - definitely not everyone's cup if tea, but just ridiculous enough for my sense of humour.

Thought I was going nuts until I saw one script was removed. Looking all over for it. Anyway, done. Love these challenges! Thanks Don. I really do enjoy reading all these scripts.

My Favs, in no particular order:
Alice In Underland
In The Red
Sour Psychosis
The Golden Ball
Enchanted Quill
The Boy and The Wolves
Pinocchio: A Nose For Flesh
Ugly Beautiful
Would Not Tell A Lie
Nightshade
Skin Deep
Call Me Mama
The Deathcap Skull

That's the long list. Already whittled it down to three, I think. Again, great challenge. Congrats everyone!

I voted today. But strangely, there were 4 at the bottom that said I already voted, so I could not vote on those. And it was my first time voting.

Thanks for listing the scripts. I'll try to hit some of those.

Correct.  The Votes are due the 28th.

The five reviews were to be completed by the 21st.

The five at the bottom of the voting list were a listing of the first five at the top of the list.  This was done so that when I wrote, 'review the five scripts after your script' I didn't have to explain to the last four writers that they needed to resume the count at the top of the list.

This was the easiest way for me to do this without creating 35 separate emails.

Needless to say, I still need to work on the process.  I had several writer just vote on five scripts whereas the intent was you vote on as many as you've read.

After ten years, I'm still refining the process.

Also,

I've just finished my review and with one exception every participant has reviewed at least five scripts.

The writer who has yet to review five scripts has had their script locked.  We'll see if it turns around tomorrow.

Folks,

Bear in mind that there, most often, are extenuation circumstances.

Please list some contenders.

At this point, I've only read about half, and I don't intend to read them all. I want to read any that are in contention, though, so if people can list some of those, I'll be sure to check them out if I haven't already. Thanks!

If you can't read all the scripts, that's fine - no-one is expecting that. But one person's opinion about what the top contenders are may be completely different from everyone else's. Anyone's opinion on the top contenders are simply that, the voting may prove otherwise.

I'd suggest just reading what you can and voting pass, consider and recommend on those, that's all anyone can do.

Part of the problem is that (after getting over being sick) you have to read the source material before reading the script.  That is more reading, but also trying to apply the script to the vein of the material; which again, takes longer to get through these.

Not complaining.  In fact, it's helped me in my reviews.  I'm just slow I guess.

My Scripts:
SHORTS
Bed Bugs
I Got The Shaft
No Clowning Around
Fool's Gold
Five Days for Redemption

TELEVISION
Father, Forgive Me
Sheriff of Nowhere

Although the Reader's Choice poll said more than 1 script can be selected, I only voted on the best entry.

The Emailed Poll, asked for considers and recommends.

Readers choice is something anyone can vote on. The one you voted on via email is only for people that had a script submitted to the OWC. That's the one that matters, as far as getting the cup goes.

Mark,

I think everyone has answered this satisfactorily.  I just want to add that I normally don't do a "readers" choice.  However there were a number of writers that I very much respect who didn't participate in the challenge this go 'round whose opinions are important to me.

However, Writer's Choice trumps everything (and generally speaking, I've found that the Reader's choice usually follows suit).

Whoops! Sorry Don, somehow that e-mail explaining how the 5 review system worked got past me. I reviewed 13 so far, the 14th being "The Girl Without Hands" which happens to be my 5th assigned script, but I can't post anything on that due to the message box missing.

Andrew,

You're good.  Don't worry about that review.  I redacted the name of the script since that would allow someone to work out which script you wrote.

Very bummed about the number of reads for this OWC well after a week of being released.

14 - 22 reads is weak, to say the least, when 37 writers entered scripts.  I honestly don't get it.

I don't understand how some can say they read, but decided not to comment...just doesn't make any sense.

As I always say, IMO, it's so much better to give each and every script a chance.  If it's poor and filled with mistakes, just stop reading and comment on what you did read.

Writers need to know why you stopped.  It all helps.

I wonder if it's ever been discussed about maybe having a panel of, say, 10 judges or so, to read each and every script and judge them based on a certain list of criteria. Of course, all who entered can still read and vote for a readers choice. Just a thought.

All but one reader fulfilled Don's requirement of reading 5 scripts.

Most people don't have time to read 37 scripts. If everyone read half, in theory every script should get about 17 or 18 reads.

If we expect everyone to read 37 scripts it's going to damage the turnout in the future, because it's just too damn much.

I only read about 15. After the reveal, I will go back and read the scripts of anyone who reviewed mine but I didn't get theirs.

The writing of the ones I read was pretty good, much better than when I used to do OWCs. I don't judge the writing by rules that were created by people who can't find work in the industry or who can't get their shit produced. That's a scam that writers need to get past.

I judge the writing by whether it made the story clear and easy to visualize and smooth to read. If the writer uses writing techniques to heighten suspense, that's the effect every writer should be after.

As for story, I look for it to make me want to turn the page. Usually that means characters I want to follow, but it could mean a mystery that I find compelling. Even better would be both. Of course, a clever twist of the unexpected is much appreciated.

I gave one recommend: the Pinochio one. The story in that one is not yet fleshed out, so it's not yet effective, but with more space and time it will be, the concepts are well envisioned. And the writing itself was high quality. Here is a writer who understands what writing is supposed to do, and he/she is more interested in that than in conforming to arbitrary rules created by failed writers teaching screenwriting courses.

So IMO, the OWC was a success. Good job, everyone.

Kevin, my old friend, you have seriously got to try and stop the broken record routine.

Literally, almost every single one of your posts mentions "rules".  You just can't seem to stop.  You are so glued to these rules you hate so much that it's getting to the point of redonkulousness.

Just let it go, bro.  Please...for your own mental health...let it go.

Don't worry..I always fight the good fight.

The fight you're always trying to fight is not a good fight.

I do commend you though for not using the word "rules" in your last post.  That's a great start!!

Uh oh...there you go again!  You just cited the forbidden word twice there!

Not good, bro...not good at all.  I thought you may have been recovering there for a second, but looks like I was incorrect.

I highly doubt I cited a single rule in all of my reviews.  What i cite are mistakes, and most of them are glaring mistakes that should be easily caught...or not done in teh first place.

As all the votes should have been in by now I thought it worth us saying what we liked.

My 3 rec's were:

Pinocchio -  A Taste For Flesh
Render Stillskin
No End of Wolves

I had 7 considers.

As for guessing who wrote what I am stumped. When I read Cinder Hell I thought this was Dan but I don't think he entered this time. As for the rest of them, no idea lol!

I think No End of Wolves belongs to Kevin

And I still say (after reading) Killer Weed is MarkItZero

I think the Enchanted Quill should be Bill's

The Boy and The Wolves: The Reimagining - the writer thought I'll like it... Well, the writer thinks many things...

I may or may not implied you were not serious if you wrote KW, I may or may not thought you liked weed if you wrote about it and I may or may not like weed myself but let me tell you one thing - lets not talk bad about weed because it kills.

Since Don hasn't revealed yet (that I know of) and since we're all guessing...

I'm guilty of guessing Mark wrote Killer Weed, as his avatar is The Dude.

I'm guessing Alice in Underland is Bill (Elevator Most Belonging) or Stevie (White Rabbit = Bunnyman)

I'd love to know who wrote Quill, both Pinocchios, Skin Deep, Ugly Beautiful.

Jeff slaughtered my script (and clearly didn't get it), so I'm half-hoping I hated his. I hope he wrote The Angel, Ant Hill, Cry Wolf or Killer Weed. But it's more likely he wrote one of the Pinocchios, No End of Wolves, Render Stillskin, or even Alice.

I'm stumped. We shall see.
