Theme: Female Lead Genre(s): Thriller, Horror, Action, Sci-fi (any of these or combination of them)
Limitations: There must be a McGuffin. Aim for low to medium budget. (Don't feel too limited by this. As Pia has pointed out, it's amazing what some can achieve if they have the right CGI friends or a spaceship set to their disposal.
I can't write female leads, trust me. I tried to write a script about a female assassin once, and I failed miserably. I'm a bloke aye, and I sometimes project myself onto characters which yields weird results when it comes to females.

Btw, what's the minimum number of pages?
Just write the character as you normally would. Just give the character a female name. Write she instead of he. Make her smarter, cooler more kick-ass and if you have a sex scene, make the other person a woman as well. Boom! Instant winner!
As far as page count goes, I would say no less than 80 pages, but this isn't a real competition, so if you end up with 70, no one is going to disqualify you.

Okay, I'll try my best, and if I'm not happy with it I won't upload.
For what it's worth, I will be reading these as potential for no-budget production. I will have a full warehouse space in November and would like to recycle some sets/wardrobe from the sci-fi feature we're shooting this month.
I will also be writing, of course. Low-budget, containted, artsy sci-fi for me

No problem!
As I mentioned in the other thread, I already have my little beat sheet worked out,. and have had a five page head start.
Haven't gone down this thread to see if we are aliasing ourselves. Unless otherwise stated, I won't be aliasing myself this time around.

Look at Sarah Connor in the Terminator, and then her change in Terminator 2. I love those movies too, and I did cry at the end of Terminator 2 also, so you're not alone there. I watched it on the box the other night, caught it by accident, but was glued to the screen. I knew what was coming, but still had that lump in my throat when Arnie bids fairwell. The music also helps create that feel, but still, I'm a grown guy and I cry over a movie.
I'd like to participate in this to redeem myself in respect to my recent behaviour to other members.
So, do you have to declare you are IN by a certain deadline, or do you just go about your merry way and hand it in at the end? "Yes, I followed the rules, never contributed, but here is my masterpiece." Like, couldn't anyone just send some script in they have been working on for years that fits the bill and then say " Oh yes, this fits!"and try to dupe real participants?
other than the macguffin, which is not a bad thing to add, i was working on a suitable idea.
ten pages by next Friday - probably a good challenge to get things going
however, i think i will post my longline and overview here before then as the way i see it, this is about all helping each other and if someone makes a a good observation - like its shite - or good suggestion early on, that could help a lot. why not?
i can't guarantee competing the script, nobody can, but i will try to write something

I'll get something done. Not sure what yet. My mind is turning over possibilities as I type this. I have a couple of ideas on my board that may be twisted to suit. The idea I was going to go with is one that I've wanted to write for a long time, based on a short story I wrote when I was around 20. So 20 years ago. It's very gruesome and I want to write it now before I go soft in my old age. The Macguffin is not an issue. I suppose I can twist this to a woman. I may go for it. But I'm still thinking. Either way, I will write something.
I'm sure there lots of ways of doing this but in my simple mind it about having something, could be real or not, which someone is being pursued for. It is likely they don't know what it it is or why, and nor do the audience, and hence why it's a mystery that helps the film appeal.

Too bad I can't participate. I just started another script, more like almost started in my head only, but... it'sa dramedy and there's no Mcguffin. But I'm serious about it and want to finish it (to start it at least). And I have to rewrite one other script - was giving it a rest. Anyway, a bummer I can't do it.
Good luck to everybody!

You mean they were wondering if you were a guy, right? I know I did... About you, I mean, think you were a guy...but only for a very brief time. Of course you didn't have your avatar back then.

You do not have to declare your in. The goal is to finish a first draft of a feature. We don't really care how you get there. Everyone has their own way of tackling this.
What would be the point in submitting something you've already written? This isn't a competition. I wrote one that fits perfectly a few months ago. One reason I won't take part. Just bust out a new one!
Got my first ten done. I've had to switch a few things around, like a female protag, but I like the way this story is going thus far. I have attempted to write this story twice before and given up, so hopefully this 7WC gives me what I need to finally finish this time.

Thanks, Dustin. Will take a look after I get something to eat/drink.
Eh, that took long(er). Anyway, I think TVTropes gave me a good idea of what a MacGuffin is.
I've been quite enamoured with a feature idea for a few days. Unfortunately, I can't come up with a MacGuffin that sounds remotely organic to the story in my head. It could fit into the thriller category, but maybe leans more towards drama as I envision it as character-centric, with a fairly slow burn. I might go with that if I can think of a decent MacGuffin, but as the topic requires a fair amount of research, it might be better to try and come up with a simpler idea just for the OWC.
Thinking of a MacGuffin story for thriller or action could probably be the easiest. Maybe even the same for sci-fi, which would probably instantly mean a grander concept. Horror even seems the hardest right now.
I'll try and start writing tomorrow, maybe I'll figure out what to do tonight. Good luck all!

In all fairness mine is an old short story idea that I've been thinking about for a few years, so this one will come fairly easily. I just hope I can do it justice this time.
Page 14 now. I may get a couple more done before sleep. Tomorrow I will go for 20 pages as it's a Sunday. Just slap the old headphones on and get 'er done. The story is in my head, it's just a matter of writing it down.
I wouldn't mind getting some help from you Pia if I get stuck, as well.
I'm not sure where you'd submit your first ten. Maybe just a link to your script here? I don't know. Maybe Don will give further instructions on that during the week.
As far as help goes, I'll do whatever I can to help.
Was also trying to wrap my head around the concept, thought I had a good idea going but after looking at the tvTropes link, my item is really pushing it. On the surface, the limitation doesn't seem too hard, but I'm having a lot of trouble actually creating something that instigates the story but isn't used for anything in particular and more importantly, that the McGuffin can also roughly be replaceable, meaning it's not very important what the item really is. I've never written anything like that before, although I'll likely try and get an entry in.
Also, are the first 10 anonymous? I'm not sure whether I'll get them in, but if they aren't, maybe folks could write what they're going to be using as the McGuffin (if they feel so inclined of course).
I'm tentatively in. I have my idea and concept. The plot is starting to form. I'm still trying to finish a rewrite on something else and my vacay is next week, so I'm not sure I'll make the ten.
As for the MacGuffin, I may be stretching it, but I don't think so. I'm basically going off the idea that a MacGuffin is anything that drives the plot through the protagonist or antagonist's pursuit of it, and that driving the plot is pretty much the only role it plays in the story.
As for what my MacGuffin is, I'll give a hint... it's small enough to fit inside a womb
I don't care about the Macguffin, or any of the other parameters. I do have a Macguffin though, I'm twenty pages in and it hasn't been mentioned yet, but it will come up in the next 20... hopefully. The story goes where the story goes, to hell with the 'rules'.
The idea behind this contest is to get you to write a feature. If you miss one or two of the stipulations then it will not matter, because at the end, you've written a great story that hasn't been held back by some made-up-on-the-spot rules.
The only thing you can win with this is a completed feature. The only thing you can lose is to not finish it. Leaving out the Macguffin doesn't make you a loser. Plus, I'd rather read proper well told stories than something that has a Macguffin levered in just to fit the rules.
After a Mi6 agent is extracted from a failed mission suffering from amnesia and accused of treason by the CIA, she soon discovers her only hope is a mysterious clinic that helps people remember.
Or....
When a Mi6 agent suffering from amnesia is taken to a secret clinic to help her remember she soon discovers that she must deal with more than just the failed mission.
Never good at these things.
Titles - are WIP
Not sure whether to focus on the character, or the conundrum or the clinic.

If you do 3 pages a day you will finish in a month, so don't feel that you have to have a high productivity rate. 5 pages a day is excellent and is a nice target to have, but even 2 pages will cut it.
Bill, stop worrying about which logline works best and start the story. The focus should fall into place as you write and will likely encompass all three of those things until the natural path is found.
Mo, the first 10 can be anonymous, if you want. I remember from past 7WCs that some people don't like to share ideas or their story while writing and others like to discuss every detail about their script. Whatever works for you. I personally don't see why being anonymous helps.
Bill, I'm with Dustin. Don't obsess about the logline at this stage. That's the last thing to polish before you start shopping it. I know at MP they spent a whole month just deciding which logline was best... Just have something rough so you don't forget what the aim of the story is.

I agree. I realized pretty quickly it would be tough building the entire concept starting from the MacGuffin. I mean, how do you exploit something whose definition is "useless and interchangeable". Plus MacGuffins have a way of popping up randomly and could just drive a particular act or sequence rather than the whole story. For instance Pulp Fiction has two MacGuffins. The briefcase of course, but also Butch's watch. Some might argue we know the importance of Butch's watch and therefor it's not a MacGuffin. But could it have easily been a ring or bracelet? Does he ever use it to tell the time? Sounds like a MacGuffin to me.
Hey Reef,
Is the clinic a place Mi6 brings her to, or does she have to get there herself against all opposition? The second way sounds a little more kinetic, IMO. The first way I'd worry they drive her there and either A) retrieve her memory, sending the story in an entirely different direction or B) they can't retrieve her memory, giving her an entirely different goal. So I guess my question is how much of the story will be driven by pursuit of the clinic? The more important it is in the story, the more important it is in the logline.
Logline - I agree there is more to get on with, but, I also feel that experience has shown me that if the Logline doesn't work your gonna have problems later.
Besides the idea IMO is to share thoughts and ideas, and that should be right at the beginning.
Which leads me to Eric's feedback.
That is a useful question, ie is she there of her own accord, or was she taken.
At the moment, the great game being played outside her story is a dispute between the USA and UK over Intel. The Brits are trying to protect their lead agent but need her to remember what happened otherwise time will run out and they will have to handl her over. A ticking clock.
On this basis they take her there but it's off the grid to avoid it being known, and a radical treatment - hopefully we are left are faced with the will it work? will it work in time? and of course what will be revealed?
Happy to give my thoughts on anybody else's idea, proposal, whether on line. Or off.

I'm not good at loglines so I can't help you write a better one, but as far as peaking my interest in the story, I would say the first one works best for me. Has a better sense of mystery.
Kabul, Afghanistan. When a drug trafficker is shot dead in a field of opium the same night an American consul is killed in a suicide bombing, a disgraced FBI agent is brought in to work alongside the bigoted local police force to unravel the connection. But as her investigation leads her deep into the corrupt world of CIA-sanctioned heroin production, and an attempt on her life is made, she realises that more may be at stake than saving her career.
Logline needs some work, but the pages are flowing
Thank you SimplyScripts and all those involved in the organisation of this contest for giving me the kick up the arse I needed to get back to writing!
On reflection I like the idea of Her having to go on the run, or under cover, a tad like minority report, all ito prove her innocence. Got to be mindful of budget though.

Hi Toby
I'm no expert on loglines and. I'm not bothered by length - this would be considered to be too long for most loglines but who cares - it does give a useful overview.
Things which come to mind are
Budget - interesting to see if you can contain this, if you so desire
Disgraced FBI versus CIA sanctioned - inter agency clash seems sound turf, but this could be seen as an American story which could be set anywhere - need to make sure you make use of the circumstances
Agent - I appreciate they are 'disgraced' but I wonder if something like a recovering drug addict may add some tension and irony
Female agent - just don't call her starling. There will a good few angles to consider in terms of male domination, and role of women in an Islamic country

The phrase 'radical treatment' creates intrigue with me. Has me wondering what exactly it is. Of course we're talking MacGuffins too, so I'm not sure I'd put it in the logline unless you plan to actually show the radical treatment and spend some time with it.
Toby:
Yeah, the logline is little long, but it sounds like a classic set-up. Plenty of real world inspiration to go on as well when it comes to allegations of CIA drug trafficking. With such a deep and wide ranging conspiracy, there may be a danger of overplotting leading to confusion, but that's all in the execution.
I'll try and get another 10 done tonight. If I manage it, I will have written almost half a feature screenplay in 2 days (40 pages).
I have no idea what the logline will look like yet though. Which, from looking at the 'expert' advice on the internet, suggests that I'm not doing it properly. Ho-hum.

You're a beast Dustin, but still... I got Hollyoaks to watch bruh
Good luck, everyone. Sounds like alot of progress in a very short amount of time.
When I did this years ago, I spend the first 3 1/2 weeks just figuring out teh story and plotting. I honestly don't understand how anyone could write more than a few pages in a couple days, after just hearing what the parameters are, but more power to y'all.
I'm officially out for this one. Too much going on in my life right now and I don't have any interest in playing in the low budget production game.
In 3.5 weeks this script will be finished. The planning has been going on in my head for years, the parameters are pretty easy to work with. Female protag and a Macguffin. I have been writing this in my mind with a male protag, but it has been fairly simple and actually refreshing to switch it out for a female.
I started mine from scratch, so mine is going to be more vomit than planning. I have the characters worked out, and the ending, and the driving force ect. which is established within the first ten pages.
I can't remember if I'm supposed to capitalize groups of people tho, like "merchants" or "soldiers". Oh well, lol.
It's set in space but I'm trying to keep the budget down as much as I can, and I can't be arsed to restart the thing, not now anyway.
Btw, day or night for scene headers set in space? Slightly confused on that.
I started from scratch last time and tried high concept... failed to execute it properly and gave up. This time I'm adapting an idea I already have from my board (that is covered with at least 50 other ideas). There are quite a few I could write for this, at least ten. All of them have been written to a certain degree in my mind already.
I wouldn't like to start from scratch on this. Not an easy thing to do at all.
Yeah, I know, but at least people will cut me some slack if it all goes wrong. I've never attempted a feature before so, and especially not an action romp set in space lol.
No McGuffin thingy yet, but I'll figure it out and slip it in somewhere.

I will.
Hell as I see it this is just that extra motivational have a go. Who knows what the outcome will be.
Mine is from scratch and as such, very changeable.
Indeed, the opening scene not only has changed three times today but within, or from, three fundamentally different types of tone.
I could have blundered forth but by the time I hit the third option I realised this was tonally spot on - until I change my mind - and will help plotting and pace.
Dustin is working on an idea that he has been thinking about a longtime, that's great but different. I look forward to hearing what his is about. If it's an idea he loves it's most likely going to be something worth reading, admittedly with drug using prostitutes who kill their pimps and children etc etc just kidding
I still intend to post questions as I feel the feedback here will be invaluable,as it is with any short. Not sure why I wouldn't want to do that.
Ten pages next Friday- yeah that's possible, but I still need to work out a central part and that could then change the demands on the opening. But still I would like to get there.

Thanks and likewise! I meant what I said, I do want to be a positive member of this site, and this gives me a chance to do that. Good luck to everyone.
Mine is a horror. I'm starting to get a little worried that I may be losing my desire to write horror, so I'm getting it out of the way now.
I can also say that it's a vampire horror... I've only ever had one of these in my head and I first wrote a version of this as a short over 20 years ago. I also wrote a novelette version (approx 30K) a couple of years after that. At that time, I liked reading about vampires and had studied loads in concerns to where the myth came from etc. Since I started writing screenplays a little over 3 years ago, this has been one of the ideas I have been wanting to adapt.
To be honest though, it is completely different from both the short and the novelette. So is a brand new story. The only thing that survives is the actual concept. Changing it to a female lead has opened up a whole new area which I am thoroughly enjoying exploring at the moment.
I've had an idea for a feature for a while now. It's a black comedy I suppose, with horror elements. I think it'd be similar in style to Beetlejuice, in terms of dealing with the afterlife with a comedic tone. I've been thinking of a McGuffin and think I could make it work.
Would this be suitable for this 7WC? It's not a horror as such and wouldn't be a thriller. So does that disqualify it from this particular challenge. Really want to write this one so may just crack on with it anyway.

I think if you write a comedy, it would not fit the criteria for this 7WC since it was " Thriller, Horror, Action, Sci-fi (any of these or combination of them)".
However, no one can stop you from writing whatever you want. You can also write whatever you want any time. Also, some people who try hard to write within the parameters given, might frown upon a script that did not follow the challenge and might not want to read it. If it's obviously a straight comedy, Don might not upload it with the rest of the scripts. Like I said though, you can upload it as a regular feature in the comedy section. My take...

It's most definitely not a straight comedy and will have some very dark moments. The subject matter is actually quite bleak, hence why I want to lighten it up with some pretty dark comedy. It has a female lead, horror elements and a McGuffin. Would that be ok? Don't want to annoy people, thinking I didn't follow the guidelines..
Just realised that mines going to be a little more expensive to film that I first thought, it's the way the script has developed.
I started off with the idea of containing it in a manor house hotel, calling it a clinic and basing most of the story around there.
It's now globe trotting like a James Bond film.
Anyway, I won't go over board and I'm sure a producer could keep it contained with stock footage and imagination. I saw a 'making of' documentary of the filmed 'screwed' which is part set in Iraq, which they somehow managed to film in a British seaside resort!! Just goes to show.
Best I write the script that's coming to me and worry about the resources later.

I'm 6 pages in. So might send you them on in a bit if you wanna send me on what you got..
Well I'm 51 pages in, lol. I meant at the end. TBH, I'd find it difficult to fully put my mind into your story while I am writing this. Once you're done though, I will read it.
Okay, now I have a talking car in mine... at least I did have until celtx crashed on me and I lost the lot. Is this a sign? Is talking car okay or not okay.
Quite like the idea of a female vampire - don't know why I get this image of bondage
I think one of the reasons, the number one reason, I loved vampires so much as a virile youth was the sexiness of it all. Who couldn't live with sucking a little blood if it meant you could get any lady you wanted by the power of mesmerisation?

You can get any lady you want with Rophypnol. There's no need to transform yourself into a vampire.
I'm really enjoying my writing at the moment, how about you lot? I'm hoping to see a lot of people make the 10 page deadline, just to see what y'all got so far.
Hope I didn't come across in the wrong way. I will read anyone's first ten that posts on the deadline and offer some words of encouragement. I will not be posting my first ten though as they will need to be cleaned up a bit and even changed in parts.

Much appreciated. Typos have been fixed. Constantly going over what I got and changing it here and there. Brain is sizzled!
IMO, you shouldn't worry too much over the first ten as they are likely to change as the story develops. Just write and don't stop. Then come back and clean it up on the rewrites.
Getting it down is the hard part IMO, especially when you're trying to pace out your story over 90 pages.
I know the start and how it all ends, but the middle could be steered in all different directions... and all sorts of subplots have the potential to be developed.

The middle is the fun part. Just go where the story takes you. If you don't like it afterwards then you can change it.
The hard part is the rewrites. Trust me. When you have to delete half the script and come up with something else to make it work, then that is the real graft.

Anyway, I suppose people work in different ways.
Yeah, gonna try that now. Going to try get a few done tonight, hopefully bring it up to about 20 pages. Hope to be halfway there by the end of the week.

That's why some refer to them as vomit drafts.
I don't worry about anything before I write. I get it all down (first draft) and then worry. Sometimes I can finish around the 60 mark and need to find more story. Other times I will finish around the 140 mark and need to take some out. Just go where the story takes you.
Some like to plan on paper. I prefer to have semi plans in my mind that lead to other plans... sometimes I don't know where it's going at all, but once I start typing it comes. Something always comes. Even if it's weak, carry on. Everything can be fixed later.

I like to jot down a few points that I'd like the story to follow. Not a strict plan, more like a rough guide. But as I write, I know what'll work best in the scene I'm in.
Then I go over it and take it all out and go back to thinking it's pure shit. God, I love writing

I use a whiteboard for character names and possible plot points/trails. If you haven't got a whiteboard then a second monitor for your computer will work just as well. When writing a feature it can be easy to get lost and especially with character names having to click things or scroll back wastes time.
Don't go over it until the second draft. You'll never finish if you over think it. There will be plenty of time for over thinking in later drafts. Everything comes together as you near the end. It does for me anyway. Sometimes I have no idea where the story is going until it gets there. I never let it stop me from writing.
I was wrong. It hasn't come. Rough notion of story, main character, McGuffin, but there's not enough to go with. Think I'll bow out.
Best wishes to those in the throes of creation!
I'm still stumped too Henry. By that I mean I've lots of vague semi formed ideas rattling around in my noggin, but nothing concrete that I can settle on yet. I think of something, then discard it, think of something else...And on it goes. Hopefully something will win out.
Two things: As Pia said last time (I think she said it)... This is not a race.
And, Don has stipulated the first 10 is optional to post.
Also, I'm not letting the McGuffin get in the way at the moment. Get the overall story first.

Correct. This isn't a race. 7 weeks is plenty of time to write at least a first draft. What method you use, is up to you. The goal is to get a first draft done.
As far as the McGuffin goes, I think that one's easy. I wrote one a couple of months ago, that fit this challenge, which is why I'm not taking part, but I'd be happy to trade feedback when the time comes. It's a heist script. A woman who works in a bank steals something from one of the safe deposit boxes. When some other guys find out, they want that something from her, no matter how they have to do it. What she actually stole is of no relevance and is never revealed. It just motivates the characters. It makes her steal it and it makes the other people want to take it from her.
Not going to be able to participate in this - got an entire pile of family shit going on. Will try to read some once they are posted.
It's a shame - I had a great idea about a female vegetarian that inherits a chicken ranch - it's working title was Eggs Macguffin. - Damn - a lost opportunity.
Usually 6 - 12. Lots of people start, but don't make it. The 7WC is a lot harder than the OWC. That's why we try to be open with our ideas and try to encourage fellow writers just to get to the end. Features are a LOT harder than shorts.

I've had an idea for... a black comedy I suppose, with horror elements.
Would this be suitable for this 7WC? It's not a horror as such and wouldn't be a thriller. So does that disqualify it from this particular challenge.
First and foremost: write your story, irregardless if it fits the parameters.
Second: twice I've submitted dark comedies for OWCs that did not ask for comedies and was... what's a nice word for pummeled/flogged/excoriated? for it. I would advise against anything for the relatively straight laced audience here to conservatively follow the given parameters.

Good luck & best wishes.
I would have read it.
If anyone is prepared to read and give notes on mine then I will do so for theirs. Even if it's a comedy. In fact it would be a welcome relief from all the action/thriller/horror/sci-fi stories. I hope there isn't anyone put off by the parameters.
One good thing to come from things like this is 8-9 reads (or whatever) on your feature, which is more than you can ask for on the boards in general these days. Especially all within close proximity of each other. It's worth entering for that alone.
No. I just happened to have finished one that fit the criteria a couple of months ago. I will not be submitting anything, but I'd happy to trade reads. I have not yet sent mine out for coverage.

I'm nearing the end of my initial draft but my first ten are going to need changing, which is pretty much standard with all my drafts.
It usually takes me three goes to get a viable story. The initial draft gets the skeleton done, then I need to colour in the middle. The third go ties everything up so there shouldn't be any plot holes or things that don't quite make sense. Then, I'm done. I call that a viable first draft.

Good going.
I'm up to page 15 but may need to spend some time checking where I'm going.
But I'm enjoying this, I even open with the "no no" of a credits scene - bring it on

I'm not bothered about stuff like that any more. I know you know what you're doing, so if it's in there, it's there because you want it there. I'll just concentrate on the story.
I'll start on Sunday. Work, and what's the word -- cant't be assed -- procrastination or something? It's simple enough, I'll just hammer it out when in the mood, it'sa horror film and I'm not a fan.
I know my story and all that, just not had time to write it.
I'll write it when I feel ready to write it. Hopefully Sunday.
It's fairly simple, so I have no pressure. I'll probably leave until 3 weeks until the deadline until I decide to do something with it.

Thanks, Libby/Pia/Bill for reminding me we're still in the first week of this. Who knows, something might gel.
I've got 10 pages and I'm going to submit them. Don't know if I even like them though. The feedback will help determine whether I keep it the way it is, I suppose.
Not that I'm the best at reviewing the first ten pages, but the thing I need to remember is that the first ten don't resolve anything. It's meant to open doors.
The questions I will ask myself when I review the first ten are
Does it make sense ? Have I lost the reader?
Is it interesting? - would someone want to read on?
Does it feel I like a film ? could this be sold?
Can you envisage the type of film this will be? Not in terms of guessing where it will go, but getting a feel for the genre, pace, characters etc
All good fun.
Now, let's read those first ten and see if any of my are ticked off!

How strict is the page-count for posting the first 10? Specifically, if I submit 11 pages instead of 10, am I going to become the outcast of the boards?
The scene on the 10th page leaks over onto the 11th, and I'm really not a fan of cutting of things halfway...

No, you're good. The ultimate goal here is to finish a feature. The one week thing is only for those who'd like feedback on the beginning.

I'll read your first ten if you feel they're ready. I know we haven't always seen eye to eye but I'll be fair and positive in my comments.
I appreciate the offer, but I'll have to politely decline. I think we're better off if we don't exchange at all during the course of the 7WC. It would be pointless, anyway, as whatever I come up with will be the final product. Any comments or critiques won't be taken into consideration. I'm not writing to get produced anymore, I'm just doing it for myself/to have fun -- but I'm still using this 7WC as a goal to help me finish up a little quicker.
EDIT: To everyone else, I would also recommend that if mine does make it by the deadline, save it for last. Save it for a rainy day when there's nothing else to read on SS and you're bored. I will be reading all other submissions, though...trying to give feedback as fast as I can.
Save it for a rainy day, eh? If the weather over here stays the way it is, I might as well start reading the first day.
I won't be submitting my first 10. Two reasons:
1. I'm moving in August so a lot of time this week has went towards preparations. 2. I'm not sure about the direction I'm taking. I might just twist what I have now in a different direction from the 7WC parameters and only use the deadline for finishing or take another direction, or even idea, altogether. I'll think on this and if I need some help deciding, I'd rather just use this thread. The 10 don't feel steady enough to put out there and I don't think they'd resemble what I'd have after 6 weeks.

If writing stopped being fun, I'd stop doing it. I don't see how there is a separation between writing for fun and writing to get produced. They are one and the same thing to me.
Oh well, if you post it, I'll read at least the first few pages, see what's different about it. Then tell you what I think. It's not like I expect people to listen to my opinion anyway. So, it doesn't matter.
I already talked about it in the other thread with you, and you understood. Now you don't. It's cool, though, and I politely request that you don't read the first few pages and tell me what you think. It's better our paths don't really cross much.
Also, I'm writing for a "different kind of fun" (it's a long story as to why, and I don't want to get into specifics about it, like I mentioned before) Like if I wanted to stop and write a 150 page Friday the 13th fan fic and then follow it up with a 150 page Halloween fan fic, I won't feel like I'm wasting valuable time. Or if that's all I ever did from here on out and never bothered with an original piece of work again, I wouldn't care. I'm just having fun. I don't give a fuck anymore about getting produced or making it big. I don't care about sending my stuff out to contests, agents, managers, whatever. I gave up.
I don't care about re-writing and re-writing and re-writing until my script is "where it needs to be" so it can make it into the hands of the right people and get made. I don't care about doing this or doing that. I don't care about asking people on here anymore for feedback so I can re-write and re-write and re-write. Whatever the heck I feel like doing, I'm gonna do. If I feel like writing a script that's hardcore NC-17 with the hardest violence and sex, I'll do it. And I won't have to worry about re-writing it, or editing it, or if it's marketable, or if it's this or that, because I'm not writing for a studio anymore, I'm writing for me. Whatever I slap down, that's what it is. There will be no second draft. On to the next thing that I always wanted to write but was too busy endlessly re-writing something else.
But like I said before in another thread, that doesn't mean all of a sudden I'm gonna start writing 20 slow scenes in a row, setting up characters for 30 pages where nothing happens just because I want to do whatever I feel like. No. I'm still going to write scenes with purpose. I’m still going to make shit happen.
People can ask, well, what's the point in posting your scripts here if you don't want feedback? If you don't care about getting produced? My answer: because I know what it's like to have nothing to read on here and just going out of your mind with boredom. I used to dig up old features to occupy myself. Yeah, I would write, but I also liked to read at the same time. I don't want some long winded review or anything. It'll just be up for anybody who's bored. For anyone who's read everything and wants to check out something new. If someone wants to say in passing, "hey, I liked it, that was cool," then that's fine. I'll even read someone's script without asking them to read mine in return. Instead, I'll recommend a feature by somebody else -- which is something I always did, I'll just keep on doing it. haha
But yeah, that's that. If anyone else, including Dustin, wants to carry on about why I crapped out, you can send me a PM.
First 10, submitted! Looking forward to reading all the other entries. I am still on vacation in Italy until Tuesday, but I will do my best to read two a day (one in the morning, one in the evening), and then blitz-read all the others once I get back home.

My first uh... 13 are submitted. Been on vacation without internet so, while I've been writing, I couldn't even format it until I had a connection (at a public library now). You can all read as little or as much as you want and after the 2nd I should be plugged back in and ready give some feedback for those who desire it.
Good luck to everyone who's still in, and to anyone who wants to jump in late. I once did one of these in nine days, though it was pretty awful
I like the anonymous aspect to the OWC. It stops all the nicey-nicey stuff. If you've got a good story, you know it. We can't all hit it every time, or even try that hard every time, so should expect to take the knocks that come.
Anyway, this is different. This is all about positivity and getting people to complete a feature no matter what. Max, really disappointed to see you go down without a fight. To write a feature though you really need to believe in your idea. Believe it's something other people will want to see.
Oops. Mine definitely won't be anonymous. Lord knows I've been ripped apart when I have submitted work without it being anonymous in the past, so I cannot imagine that being a problem here!
That being said, if Pia/Don would rather I re-uploaded an anonymous version, I will happily do so.
Submitted. I'm going to try and read them all, but I'm moving house this coming week, and have to go in a hotel in-between - don't know how long that'll be for, but I'll get access some how, and I'll get through them. Positive, constructive feedback too
That being said, if Pia/Don would rather I re-uploaded an anonymous version, I will happily do so.
It's entirely up to each writer. Like Dustin said, it's all about cheering each other on and try to get to the end and write FADE OUT:
As far as being harsh because someone doesn't like someone goes, I think we're more adult than that. It's true that some people have a tougher reviewing style, but I doubt that has anything to do with feelings for the writer.
Right, have started... 5 pages in and the protag wants to be the male lead character not the female lead... what's the rules on dual protags for this OWC?
I'm not going to worry about the 10 page intro piece as I'm still on hols, will be shooting for a first draft for 7 week deadline though. (Might end up being a bit tricky as I've a sniff of some spec TV work)
Very sad to see Max drop out like that before the first 10 are even submitted.
As I said earlier, IMO, one shouldn't even have anything written in a week's time when planning/plotting a feature, but to each their own.
Max, if I were you, I'd rethink being out, as you have 6 weeks to go, bro, which is more than enough time to complete this.
Seconded.
If you're working off a story you've had in mind from the past, maybe it's slightly different, but I'm still formulating ideas and ideas for the structure at present.
This time next week, you could feel different or even this time tomorrow. You could get the urge to write and then in under 7 weeks you'd have the first draft done.
Chill, take it easy and maybe come back to it later.
Eff it... I might just write two... or three. Just kidding on three. It would be a tall order. But I could do it if I wrote for eight hours a day most days. 4 hours writing usually means 10 freshly created pages for me. I do work too, but I work for myself, so my hours are mine to use as I wish, mostly. I'm lucky in that respect. Never could get along with working for other people though. 9-5 pretty much destroys a person's day, and will to live, I imagine. Not to mention the commute to work... a job in itself.
But, even if you can set aside two hours per day, that should be 5 pages per day. Possibly more if you have a weekend at home. Within 3 weeks you could have a first draft. Even if you're the type of writer that likes to write what could turn out to be pointless, detailed plans first, 7 weeks is a perfectly doable target.
Force yourself to finish. I wouldn't ordinarily advise that... but if it's your first feature, write the damned thing and get it out of the way. Once you've done one, then you can do another one. It's an achievement in itself, so it doesn't matter how the story turns out.

Yeah, clever clogs, but can you juggle or ride a unicycle at the same time
I'm up p40 and rather like it so far. I spent some time plotting and will need to focus on the second half to avoid it wondering off. But it's good to write.

Wondering or wandering? I suppose either could apply depending on your genre, Bill?
I'm still wandering what is is as well
So far it has;
Thriller - tick, with a touch of darkish humour
Female lead - yes, but actually has turned into a buddy movie, with female lead
Low budget - fail, badly. It's just the way the story went.
It's the kind I'm sure someone could do without going way over the top but it's definitely not a single location story. So less £100k budget, more £1m...more if they thought it needed it.
