Has anyone else been following the amazing story of the San Jose mine rescue? 69 days underground, and they're slowly being brought to the surface one by one - it's an incredible tale, and the ending is turning out to be very emotional. I've had it on in the background all day, and it's just awesome viewing.

No doubt people in Hollywood are already working away on how they're going to turn this into a movie. There are so many amazing potential elements for scenes...

- The vehicle mechanic who happened to be down in the caverns inspecting a mining trolley when the mine collapsed.

- The 19 year-old, only a miner for five months, struggling to cope with the situation.

- 17 days when nobody in the outside world even knew they were alive, and the way they were first discovered: a face pressed up against a camera probe that had been sent down to look around, and then a note tied to a drill bit that the Chilean President has carried around in his pocket ever since.

- The rumour that the miners were only found because the drill bit HAPPENED to glance a certain way off a rock...any other direction and they might not have been found. Chilean priests declaring it a miracle, divine intervention.

- Fears that the miners might not be released till Christmas, although that turned out to be wrong.

- The miner who really struggled at first, but learnt to cope by running three miles through the caverns every day.

- The miners celebrating Chile's 200th anniversary of Independance.

- The occasion where they sent down a projector and fibre optic cable, and the miners watched a Chile vs. Ukraine football match on a big screen (one of the miners is a former professional footballer).

- The wife of one of the miners giving birth to his daughter in a hospital nearby, and the parents deciding to call the baby 'Hope'.

- Tensions among the relatives waiting up above; the miner who had his wife AND mistress turn up to wait for him, the father who is only on speaking terms with one of the two sons trapped in the mine below.

- The moment when the drill strikes through and final preparations for the rescue begin. The moment when the capsule finally arrives in the chamber 650m below ground, and the rescue expert sent down to help the miners climbs out and embraces them in turn.

- Even the order of the rescue is perfect. The first man is the Deputy Foreman, and the son who won't speak to his estranged father. And the last man? The Foreman, one of the oldest. The captain who waits for every one of his workers to get safely to the surface before he finally leaves himself.

All of the above facts are true, and actually happened. And that's only the entrapment and rescue. Imagine what'll happen afterwards, the miners' struggles to come to terms with their new-found freedom. It even has a pre-made, perfect title, which comes from the original note: "We are fine, in the shelter, the 33."

The 33 - winner of the Best Picture Oscar 2013.

I think they've been watching some One Life to Live.  They love their Soaps, John Mc'Bane is so dreamy!!!!

I'm kidding.  It is a good story, but in all honesty Hollywood would and will find some way to ass it up.  It'll be a completely different story by the time they get done with it.  The miners will be considered hero's in the movie for doing nothing more than their jobs.  (cough) Firemen (cough)... Though, it is a dirty job and I've never do it.

Either that or they'll have the Decent girls spelunking down and resurface them in no time, fighting off humanoid cave dwellers along the way.  Trust me, something with an assy smell will come out of this story for the big screen.  A horror movie, an unrealistic drama with too many bleeding heart tough guys... An action movie starring Brandon Cooper or whatever that guys name is.  Something.  But you seem to have a great handle on the facts around it, maybe you should write it, man.  Could be good for your gig as a writer.

Ha ha that made my day.

I wonder if you could be right Jonny. And who is even more right is Baltis. They definitely will change up the story a lot. Considering that they'll have to make it even more interesting than it already is.

I'm waiting for a movie about the 2004 tsunami still...Or is Hereafter about that? Hmm...

One of the miners (#22 to come up, I think) will have some explaining to do.  While his wife waited in Camp Hope, she ran into his mistress of several years.

He may want to stay down there....

jesus, I'm finally in tune. With me guitar I mean.

Been watching this for weeks. It's been two months for them lads, hasn't it?

made of tough stuff, almost as hard as Irish lads.

Mind you, some fellas I knew from round here got stuck in a cave for three days. They came out looking like pale blinded moaning moles. Doubt they'd have made a month. Never mind two.

Up the Chilean Miners. Good work, fellas.

Baltis could make "The 33" into a six to ten page screenplay!
We can watch it on youtube, although I suspect it'll have a Benny Hill quality to it.

This.

Only with awfully caucasian looking Chilean miners.

I wouldn't touch it.   And that video is, at the moment, how I feel my OWC is going after page 6.  I've worked around a bit of it just now, though.  I think it'll be fine.

It's a shame they never started eating each other really, that always seems to go down well in these type of flicks. Weren't those rugby players who crashed into the Andes from Chile too? They ate each other, seemed to have worked for them.

Scott Tenaman ate his parents, okay it was not his fault, Cartman killed his parents and put them in his food, but guess what food it was? Yeah, it was a Chile! At the Chileconcarnival.

Point is, they are from Chile so they almost have a free pass to eat each other if they wanted but in the end chose not too, good for them but obviously nobody was thinking about Hollywood here. Selfish? Maybe.

And being in Chile, Hollywood already hates the idea.  Don't be surprised if they move the story and location to somewhere in america, so we could have Brad Pitt, George Clooney and, as I said earlier, Bradly Cooper in it.

Hell, they'll find someway to shoe horn a big name actor in it anyways.  He'll be a younger guy, who had a kid on the way and has this once in a life time job offer for mining in Chile --  & he just had to take it to support his family, whom he never sees.  His wife takes their savings and flies to Chile to be in the hope camp and be there the day he is brought out of the cave. Along the way she gives birth and She and their lovely daughter greet him with open arms and tears.

Cole - I just gotta take this job, Anabelle Lee. I just gotta!  We got a little one on the way and things ain't comin' our way the way the good lord intended them to.

Anabelle Lee - But... But I'll never see you.  And what about the baby?

Cole - It's only a 4 year mining contract.  I'll be home before she goes into school.  It's the right thing, Annabelle Lee.  It is.  It's a blessin' from the heavens.

Anabelle Lee - But, isn't it dangerous?

Cole - They got shows on tv more dangerous than this.  Reality ones.

THE 33 --- It's the feel good movie of the forevers!!!

You can add Adam Sandler to the mix.  Of course the other miners would quickly kill him when he doesn't stop talking in a retarded voice.

Well it didn't take long.

Just been announced that M Night to remember Shalalalalalaman is going to direct the movie. He wrote the script last night while in the bath.

In his vision they do eat each other until there is only one left, Bradley Cooper's character. There is a big twist though when at the end it is revealed that it was not the miners underground at all. Global Warming has caused a huge tectonic plate rupture and in fact The whole of Chile was underground - The Miners were in fact the only ones above the ground. We don't realise this until Bradley Cooper is "rescued" only to find out they are all now trapped, the whole of Chile, and he probably has to eat everyone.

It is going to be called "Chile Con Cave-in"

Say what you want about M Night, but the guy is a freaking genius.

Great post, Jonny, and all too portentous.

Ron Howard Oscar pandering fodder if I ever I saw it and when it does come to a "theatre near you in 2013", expect a conveniently placed November/December release date.

I can the Hollywood version now...

Chevy Chase, Woody Allen, Steve Martin, David Arquette, Joachim Phoenix and Johnny Depp are part of the 33.

Oh dear, I musta had too many free whiskeys at the gig. I'm confuzed. Did they make this already.

Eat each other? Is that a euphemism or am I pissed again?

Where's this? Oh, it's my house. Right. Night all. Fucking Radiohead and U2. Talented rich BARSTARDS.

Fecking hand and thorat is killing me. I need me ugly sleep. Fecking Bono. Why do you sing too high? You know I can't hit that one. Fecking this, fecking that... (cont overleaf)

An October 13th release date, surely? To celebrate the anniversary. Have the premiere then, at least.

Ha, no doubt they'll sugar coat it into nothingness. If it were me, I'd make it all Spanish with subtitles to give it that ring of authenticity that critics seem to enjoy. A cast of unknowns perhaps peppered with reasonably well-known, respected actors (in the older roles, the President, people like that), massive reconstructions of Camp Hope and the mining chambers...it'd be good. Give it to Alfonso Cuaron, or even Simon Beaufoy and Danny Boyle. They'd do it write. Just keep it away from Oliver Stone!

Perhaps the best moment so far - and this is how you end the trailer before you fade in The 33 - came as the second guy out, Mario Sepulveda, neared the top of the rescue shaft. He yelled out 'Vamos vamos vamos!' - 'Go go go!' - and his wife, waiting for him at the top, heard, recognised his voice, and smiled. Him looking up at the lights waiting above, yelling 'Vamos vamos vamos!'...this event was made for cinema.

I guarantee someone somewhere in Hollywood is at least beginning to put the script together.

I think someone far more established and, to be honest, equipped (at least right now) would beat me to the punch. It is a type of writing I like - dramatising real events, and I have a few I want to write at some point in the future - but I'll let someone else take this one.

Guess who's back? Back again?
