If you don't do the ten first pages thing, I think it would be a good idea, very good idea, to have a topic set up here, or at least a thread. I think there would be a lot of effective feedback from regulars that could either unstall the project with ideas or questions, or give some feedback on the premise itself. Maybe a logline should be included with something like that.

How about retrieving the last two years of SS spawned produced scripts-to-shorts, looking them over for commonalities, base OWC off of analysis results.

Ray, some of us aren't interested in writing no budget productions from film school students.

Why isn't Brett's Lie Detector on this list?

Jeff, I understand.
You're interested in writing something that no one will produce.
You like to write, so you write.
Got it.

Have another cuff of coppee.
Good morning!

I didn't include Brett's Lie Detector because:
A - I'm slighting him with intent and malice.
B - I'm green with sour grapes envy.
C - He refused my passionate advances.
D - He won't pay child support for his uncle daddy's red headed step child.
E - I searched ten or twelve pages deep on this thread and didn't see it

Whatever Don decides to do for an OWC, I just started a new feature today. Goal is to have a first draft in two weeks. Don't worry, I won't toss that draft up here.

Ray, I disagree completely.  I really do.  I don't think that's the point at all, and it comes off as a little condescending, as well.

And...I don't drink frickin' coffee!

Mornin'.

I hate you, Pia. Lol.

Thank you, Bert.  Just the sight of that made me feel better!

Ray, my comment about no budget productions from film school students does not include everything, obviously, but it seems to be what you're suggesting people aim for.  To me, that's aiming pretty damn low, and I'm not for it in any way.

Don't get me wrong...you know I appreciate all your posts, insights, tables, graphs, etc.  Also got a real kick out of your analysis of the last OWC scripts...BUT...in many ways, the kick I get is a comical one.

You seem to like to stress the importance of writing scripts that require almost nothing or extremely minimal props, and you always note things like "rubber knife", or the like...and that always makes me laugh.

I mean, c'mon, seriously...who wants to see such a production?  Who's gonna be proud of such a thing?  Film students...that's who, and God bless 'em...nothing wrong with that.

I'm far from the student age and have way too critical an eye to even remotely consider having anything I write put together like that.  I'd never hear the end of it from my friends and family.  There's nothing wrong with it, if that's what you're aiming for, but it ain't for me.

Different strokes, folks...

C'mon, seriously.
Ask someone who's filming something if they don't hafta write a list down of all the shhhhstuff they gotta bring between cast & crew.

"Knife. Knife! Where the GD knife! Asisstant pissant, who's the numnuts in charge of the GD knife for this scene?"
"Um, boss. You're the director and the assistant pissant. YOU'RE the numnuts in charge of all the props".
"F#ck meeeeee.  Script rewrite! The killer uses a... gimme that... A PENCIL! to stab the heroine. Gold. It's gold, I tell ya!"

We all gots critical iiis for different things.

Indeed, different strokes, folks...

Ray, I mean absolutely no offense and I understand what you're saying and where you're coming from.

My point is this...

A few years ago, I was reading a piss poor feature horror script on SS.  I offered some constructive criticism, and the writer came back and said thanks, but we're already going into production, so it doesn't matter at this point.  I wondered how this could possibly be, because the script was just literally abysmal, so I asked where they obtained financing.  The dude came back and said he and his friend were putting all the money they could scrounge up and they took out loans from their parents and even friends of both families.

I was even more intrigued, and kept on digging, finally asking straight up, what the budget was and how much money they secured.

Turns out they got about $500, and were 2 kids below the age of 17, and had gotten $50 here and $25 there, all said, totaling $500.  On top of all that, the kid told me that a good portion of the loan was going toward rubber knives, rubber axe/hatchets, fake blood, wigs, and a "costume" for the killer to wear.

I got quite a chuckle out of that.

Point is, for 2 15 year old kids, that's all fine and dandy, but ain't what I'm looking for.
