It's quiet here. Maybe everyone went on nice long vacations. There was no OWC in July and there probably will not be another one until October.

I personally have nothing in particular going on writing wise at the moment. I finished my episode of Seriously wounded yesterday titled Two Cocktails and a Toe Tag.    I'm reshooting some stuff for Old Wounds after the 14th some time and the FK rewrite I will tackle in September. In other words, I don't have anywhere in particular to aim my 5 pages/day.  Is anyone interested in some writing? A game. Another SoulShadows, Buckets of Blood or something new. A feature writing challenge or anything else?

Let me know if you're interested or have any ideas.

Congrats on finishing Two Cocktails and a Toe Tag. Great title!

I'm sorry, Pia, I have to pass.
I would love to do some fun writing.

But, I'm pushing hard to finish a rough draft of a new feature this week.
And I've got to rip apart act one of Zombie Playground before the next pitch event.
Plus polish the new feature for the big Pitch Expo on 9/18 here in L.A.

Lastly, working with a student filmmaker that wants to produce West Side Markets.
And tweak Lie Detector as I get more producer notes.

However...I can cough up a few hours for a wine heavy podcast!

I don't drink wine....

I know people are busy or have left, but it used to be this place was hopping with different stuff going on. We had games a lot of people took part in and different series and stuff. Now this place seems very dead. Not many people are reading even. Which reminds me. I got to finish Transgate and your new version of Lie Detector. I have stuff I can tinker with, just thought it would be fun if some other people felt like doing something fun.

I just got back from vacation myself -- mostly off the boards for about three weeks.

Returned to a boat-load of work -- and again, find myself with very little play-time.

I sure wish I had the time to read everything I wanted to, with new stuff from Janet, James, Heretic, Cindy, and yeah, that Lie Detector rewrite by some hack I heard about somewhere...

You can call it "dead", but I sure see lots of new writing going on -- which is great -- just not as much playing around as there usually is.

I'm game for all of the above, Pia.  Those writing games were great, IMO.

I'd even be up for another 7WC or the like, as I guess I need some sort of deadline to actually pump out a feature.  I still haven't gotten past the research/planning for me latest feature, but I really do want to write it and maybe some sort of deadline based challenge would be just what the Doc ordered.

Another Podcast would be good Friday as well, but not Saturday.

What do you think?

This!

Is very true, for me.
The deadline for Zombie Playground was the 6/5 PitchFest.
Kept me on track for the ten weeks leading up to the event.
Plus the added incentive of paying for the convention in advance helped.

Glad to hear your interview went great!

I wanted to do a couple of games that were planned and scrapped back in the day, but not enough people went for it. Having all the time in the world, I'm still up for it, but this place, overall, is less busy than it was back then.

I just don't know if enough people will go for it to get it done. And, when I mean games, I don't mean (insert number here)WC's or anything like that. I mean things like that Killer game you guys had or the old planned hitmen/serial killers on a plane or whatever.

Doesn't matter to me, though. If we don't, I still have plenty of writing that's not getting enough attention from me anyway.

Hey Pia,

Good of you to always be keeping different things going!

I'm in pre-production on a feature right now so I'm pretty busy, sneaking on here when I can.

A 7WC would be great for me as I've got a script I've been meaning to bang out which I haven't had the time for.  But I'd be game for anything, as time allows.

Hey, glad to see some people are out there still.

I'd totally be game for a 7WC if others are interested. What would you like to see the assignment be? Genre based? Something from the InkTip lists of producers looking for? Lets come up with some ideas that can benefit us all.

As some of you know, I've been in a writing slump lately, but I still try to stick to my 5-10 pages/day just for a writing routine. I think it would help me get back on track if I was under pressure to make something besides short shorts. I have enough of those I need to finish or already have finished.

Let me know what you guys want to do. I'm game for anything.

Btw, I think we did the last 7WC 12 months ago...

Yeah, I've been in a slump too. Haven't written anything for a couple of months.

Too be fair, I chose not to enter the last OWC cos I didn't like the concept...

Something like Pia suggested, some sort of feature challenge involving an Inktip reuquest could be interesting.

Once I knuckle down and start writing again, I will get into the groove again.

The family was away for 3 weeks in July and all I did was work every now and then, and play onliine games till midnight, every night!!

Man, if I could write 5-10 pages a day, I wouldn't be bogged down in all these damned features right now. I have ridiculous amounts of ideas but when I sit down to write them, my hands freeze up. Although, two weeks ago (for four days), I did do 55 pages, so that was a friendly total.

Maybe I could go for a 7WC. After all, I've failed the other two (although I'm this close to finishing the one from 2009, finally) and maybe the third time's the charm. =)

Hey Stevie

I'm not much of a gamer myself, but when I lost my business last year, I started playing this game online called Evony. Man, it eats up all your time! When I stopped cold turkey, that's when I started writing, never went back. I actually made some online friends in the game that I stay in touch with. I played that game all summer while I adjusted to my new life. Still trying to adjust!

Good to see you back around!

Yeah, I was addicted to Evony for a couple of weeks! Now there's heaps of those browser based games.
I play mainly the free MMORPG'S, the fantasy ones. I enjoy having my char ruun around killing 10 monsters to do a quest.
Though I started playing a FPS, Combat Arms. It is pretty cool blowing the shit out of zombies in a secluded cabin with dudes from all over the world.

There are tons of FREE games out there and the graphics are getting better and bigger

Hey Pia

I'll love to participate in the 7OWC if you guys let me in. I still feel guilty in not finishing up last time. . I still have the draft, but haven't worked on it for a while. This time around I'm submitting regardless of anything. If not that, anything else is fine with me. I love the soulshadows. Never participated in buckets of blood but will like to.

Been too busy with Max's Traveling Circus.  I'm trying to see if I can finish at least one feature which, dare I say, may be this one. It's really difficult because of the characters dialogue and actions. Currently, I'm around 20 pages in the rewrite stage but the story's moving forward. I have no idea what happens after pg.30 though lol. But I'm looking to submit it here around September if it's meant to be.

Well I'm a big fan of SimplyScripts Radio! Someone mentioned doing another episode and I never get tired of listening to you guys.

If you put together a 7WC Pia, my suggestion would be something to challenge people in the area of character development. From the scripts I've read on here so far, that seems to be the biggest issue in most of them.

For what it's worth, I did have a fully-formed 7WC ready to go before you all went off and did the amnesia features last summer. Could dust that off? Or, I think a new Killer game could be a nice, fun thing - especially since only about half of us who played the last one are actually still here...fresh meat!

As I said, I'm up for anything, but if it's a 7WC (7 Week Challenge, rdhay), I've already got my subject matter ready to go, and that's what I'd be writing.

Another Killer game is always cool, as well.

For those who are new here, the 7WC stands for 7 week challenge as Jeff mentioned. The idea is to write a full feature in 7 weeks. It's not a contest! The idea is to help each other write a feature. In the past, we've done this twice, most scripts are either first drafts or early drafts once they get posted here, but they all have great potential and with all the feedback given, they can all be rewritten into something real good.

If we do a 7WC, should we write whatever we want or have a theme or genre to follow? I seem to do better when given an "assignment". Helps me focus. I didn't really like the Christmas idea from 18 months ago, so I protested by writing a slasher/black comedy type thing. Some people really really hated it, but guess what? The people that are making the Seriously Wounded project really really want to read it...you never know what will come out of things. Last one we did (JohnnyBoy) the assignment was chosen because Babz and InkTip were looking for thrillers with amnesia.

Suggestions/ideas for a 7WC?

I like the games too, but that needs someone to "run" it and keep it organized. I'm probably not the best person for that, but if someone else wants to do that, I'm in.

Cool!

And Gabe, of course you're allowed to be part. The more the merrier!!

Thanks Pia.

If we do a 7owc, let's just write whatever we want. I think the whole write on assignment task has been done. Time for a change. My opinion though. And if we do, I'm submitting the end product as is, mistakes and everything. lol.

Agreed. I've got two features in the works, in addition to rewriting my latest short, and wouldn't participate but I would like to see regulars come up with original material. Writing a feature in seven weeks is a feet in and of itself and it'd be nice to see a break from a handful of people essentially writing the same script, what with the OWC and all.

As for it being quiet around here, it is a major bummer. It seems to be standard nowadays. Consequently, I am on full blown vacation and the Internet has been out of sight, out of mind, more or less.

I'd vote for whatever we felt like on the 7WC.  Or maybe guidelines that didn't affect, say, genre, so that we'd be sure to have very different scripts.

I'd prefer a set assignment - like Pia, it gets me motivated.

I don't think its really 'fair' if people use a half written script as their 7WC - after all, we frown on people who regurgitate older stuff for OWC's.

If the genre and theme or whatever was cool for me, I'd have a crack. Am gonna do some writing this weekend, resuming on my Beatles short, 'Benedict Canyon'.

I'M FINALLY OFF MY ARSE AGAIN AND INSPIRED TO WRITE!!!

A 7WC without a theme could be fun. I have a really good idea for a script in my head but I haven't written anything in a few years now, and I've never finished anything. I think for me personally it would be a great start. I constantly feel like I have no idea what I'm doing so it would be nice to have that support system.

Still think a game would be a better use of resources. What good is a 7WC without a theme? All you're saying is take an idea and write it. Isn't that what most of us are already doing anyway?

A mid August OWC would be very welcome.  Sounds great.

Blonde, what we'd get out of a 7WC is a bunch of feature scripts from contributing members that we wouldn't get otherwise.  It doesn't matter if they're all based on completely different things, genres, ideas, whatever.  Writing a script in 7 weeks isn't an easy task, any way you look at it.

But what I'm saying is, aren't a good portion of the people here likely working on features now or at some point already?

For example, I'm sure a couple people will start up a new screenplay for the sake of the contest, but it seems that working on a feature you're already on is a smarter play (so your focus isn't taken off your previous script and put into this new one), but then the contest loses its meaning. So, I don't understand what good it would be without a genre, theme, idea, what-have-you because a person could just continue something they were already working on pre-7WC.

You see what I'm saying?

I definitely see what you're saying, but it sounds to me like several people are working on, or trying to start working on something they're already thought about...but for some reason, they're not attacking it like they would if they were under a deadline.

That's my deal here for sure. I've been wanting to get going for several months now but so far I haven't even written a "FADE IN" yet.

I'm not going to drop what I want to write and start writing something I don't want to write at this point.  If others want to go this route, that's cool...you and they can and should.

Well if there's another OWC looming, I guess we can push any 7WC back? Personally a theme and specific would be better but that's only MHO

Hopefully the OWC will have a tighter theme and genre this time around

I might be up for something to distract myself from my little world for a bit. Depends on what it is, but I'll be checking out what's going on. I might even jump in. Since I just finished that book, I could use the distraction.

I'm always up for an OWC, and since Don had one planned for a couple weeks from now, maybe hold off on that 7WC until the end of August.  I'm completing a second draft of a feature, so this comes at a good time for me.

I'm still keen on an idea someone had ages ago, where we gave a certain theme or logline or whatever but it is written in different genres, perhaps randomly given out?

This would be ok for a 7WC as there would be only a handful doing it anyway.

Agreed.  Might as well wait for the OWC...hopefully, it appears sooner than later.

If a 7Wc pops up, I think I'll just use it to write my new feature and provide support and cheer leading, where necessary...and I'll complete mine in the same time line.

Nester, I remember you from the last OWC...you said you were in and then disappeared.

OWC - One Week Challenge

7WC - Seven Week Challenge

You're given a genre and topic and have either 1 or 7 weeks to write a script.  10-12 pages approximately for the One week version and a feature for the 7 week variety.

Hope to see you there!!

I'm in for either.  OWC or 7WC.

Maybe they could overlap.  That's more what real life is like...

Do a 4WC, write an hour long horror.  Call the series The Ides and each episode must be themed with a particular month.

late to the party, but I say we let the owc that Don had in mind go through. And then, we can do 7owc or whatever we decide to do.

I'm mostly quiet on my end because I'm writing like an SOB for a mid-Aug deadline. Luckily, it's in the horror vibe so I'd already be juiced up so to speak.

If we do something in a specific genre I think it should be one of the less commonly represented ones like sci-fi, or even straight drama.

Make it a mockumentary from an alien's perspective on their perceived value and /or function of something absolutely worthless or mundane to us.

I have no idea if Don is planning an October OWC as well. If so, then my vote would go towards a 7WC or a game if someone wants to "run" it.

Personally I have no interest in writing 60 pages of something. Not a whole lot you can do with a script like that once it's finished. Just MHO of course.

I also have no interest in writing a mockumentary. I got that assignment at the NYC comp and I hated it. Again, that's just me.

Thank you, Pia for starting this thread.

I know it's different for everyone, but I need to set aside large blocks of time for writing. Since I know this about myself, I'm trying to get organized for projects this fall. It's my favorite season, so I'm utilizing this time now to prepare. KinDUV like getting ready for a great big festival.

Phil always used to say: You don't need OWC or whatever to write. He's right/write.   But these kinds of exercises help people I believe because they're getting together and it becomes like a party. If you're like me, you can't resist a party! So yes...

If someone figures out a cool writing experiment for us to indulge in intellectual masturbation, then by all means...

Yeah, I don't really see the point of writing a 60 page mockumentary about alien perpectives on thumbtacks, or any other mundane object.  I say get this new OWC going as soon as possible, which would leave just about 7 weeks before the next OWC at the end of October, right?  I already have my next feature script idea, so if it conforms to the guidelines of the next 7WC, I'm in.

I had been planning to do major rewrites of my earlier stories, and haven't even thought about a new feature. But I would be game. Ryan whupped me in the 48 hr challenge, so I'm looking for a comeback bout!

I will only recommend this, and I am betting this applies to most here, and applies to both OWC or 7WC: most people won't write if they don't think the work is something they might be able to use when it's over. So I don't think writing experiments would bring people in, unless it was just like a 24 hr thing. That's my 2 cents, now I'm broke.

IMO writing experiments are fine for an OWC, but nothing that involves anymore time.  Most peeps seem to only spend a few hours on their OWC scripts anyways, so no big deal, usually.

A 7Wc feature is a completely different animal though.  No one wants to spend 2 months putting together a feature that doesn't have the chance to go anywhere.

Let's OWC it next Friday!!!!!

Valid point, and I will do an OWC, but not just for the heck of it. So if the topic doesn't work for me, I'll keep working other stuff. I'll do reviews though, as before, to contribute.

BTW: I do realize it's very tough coming up with topics, so I'm not being critical at all. And I know it's especially tough for those who have been doing OWC's for years, however long they have been around. I appreciate the effort and the opportunity, and will contribute in some way.

As long as the OWC isn't too open like the last one. Thats why there were only 15 scripts submitted.
I know Phil had left and Don organised it but it was a pretty vague concept, the old donkey kong thing.

I think this has been done before, but a neat restriction might be something around rating.  For example, if we had to write a G-rated script, or a script rated R but only for nudity (I've gotten that one before, actually).  Another might be one that demanded a specific effect, for example if we had to have a sequence that would be best achieved by stop motion, or by models, or by puppets.

Another idea that might be fun for a challenge -- I don't know how long this would take place over, but it would be neat to see.  What if we wrote something very short, like maybe a six pages max script, from a given set of guidelines, and we had, whatever, four days.  At the end of those four days, we'd submit our scripts, and on the submission deadline we'd be given significant rewrite guidelines (ie, "it has to be set in the future now, on a boat that trawls the sea for junked androids" or "we now want the main character to have a monkey sidekick").  We'd get two days for the rewrite, then submit again.  Those two submissions would be packaged together and everyone could read and compare the two drafts.

I dunno.  Something like that.  Trying to think of ideas that accurately replicate real-life situations.

An idea from Movie Poet -- what if our OWC was the first 10 pages of a feature?

The idea that it is part of something larger gives people plenty to comment on.

I like the idea, but the limit to 10 pages should be more flexible than normal. Otherwise it might end on very odd moment.

I wouldn't mind if you did this, but went with an Act One theme, maybe gave 2 weeks.

The point is that after 10 pages a reader will decide whether or not to commit to reading your script.    Most don't wait until the end of the first act.

I'd rather stick to a traditional owc, just make the theme something not too open yet not too restrictive.  Easier said than done of course, and you can never please everyone.  Is there a genre that hasn't been tackled yet by an OWC?  Western?   Thriller?  Or maybe a combination of genres.

Personally, I don't like the idea of submitting the first ten pages of a feature.  I just don't see the point.  It's the very beginning of a first draft.  Odds are damn near every word will changed or altered in the final draft.  And the readers will inevitably raise questions which will be frustrating to the writer, like "Why would he give that character such a strange look on page 4."  And the writer has to explain that was foreshadowing for a subplot he's going to intro on page 15 or so.  Just an example.  It would raise too many questions which I doubt would helpful to the writer.

I just think this challenge works best when we're forced to create original, engaging characters that follow a full story to a satisying ending within a restricted number of pages.

No theme.  Whatever you happen to be working on.

You get a week to polish it up, get some feedback.

Nope.  Like Cornetto says, people gotta decide if they want to see page 11.

That can be the theme, "You wanna see page 11?"

Didn't you just say (somewhere) that you were itching to get to work on a new feature idea.  How can this not be for you?

Anyways, just putting the idea out there.  I think it is cool.

We did a Western one as I recall.  I think the theme was "A visit to the General Store".

And there was definitely a thriller sometime.  Maybe not for a lot of years though.

I may be itching but not throw up the first 10 pages in something like this.  I didn't think I was being "whiney", either...nor was I trying to be.  I merely said it's not for me.

We all have the choice to partake or not to, so whatever everyone or someone decides on, we go from there.

Now...if you really want to hear me start whining...

I'm also not in favor of "first ten pages" of a feature. If it is the first ten pages of a feature one never finished, maybe there was a reason it is unfinished. Now, it is possible that those first ten could be an expanded teaser of an opening.

Five come to mind:

The Dark Knight.

That Joker bank caper has a beginning, middle and an end.

- beginning of the robbery/picking up last clown (Joker)

- double crosses to and fro, finding out the bank is mob-owned.

- The Joker takes out the bus driver, reveals himself to the bank manager and escapes

Which all and all most likely did not exist in ten pages, but probably less than half.

Or the first eight minutes of Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

- Introduction of Indy/ following a trail / 'Hovitos are near'

- Finding the cave, avoiding traps, getting the idol

- "Throw Me The Idol, I'll throw you the whip"/ Meet Belloq/ Escape from the Hovitos/"I hate Snakes, Reggie"

Speed (1993)

- Mad bomber traps people in an elevator; SWAT called in.

- Two SWAT guys rescue the people using an elaborate plan

- Same guys go after the bomber, and bomber takes his own life (or so they thought)

Pulp Fiction.

- "Royale With Cheese"/ "We should have shotguns"

-  Mia discussion (Tv Pilots and foot massages)

-  Ezekiel 25:17

'Superman' (1978) where \
Jor-El puts Zod in the phatomzone,
disagrees with the council,
and puts his only son in a crystal spaceship to save his life.

So, there are ways it can be done.
Am I for it? I'm on the bubble right now.

UP FRONT DISCLIMER:  Ain't got time these days for sh!t nothing and won't even consider writing nothing till the OCT OWC.

That said, the "first ten pages thing" has a very short lifespan.
Dusting off and polishing up something that's been on a floppy disk is like asking people to look at your dad's old shirt collection: Pass.

One week. (most of you will start writing the last 6 - 12hrs, anyways). HA!
Ten pages.
It's a short.
Then write a short.
Beginning, middle and end (respectful nod to Jeff, George and Micheal).
Make it something someone will/could shoot.
That means low/no budget.
One setting, two max.
Somewhere common (parking lot) and not requiring permits (like a bistro cafe!)
Two to four characters, three is ideal.
Street clothes.
Found object props.
No SFX, audio - maybe.
Lo/no special makeup.
Daytime requires no/little extra lighting expense.
Interior scenes are an lo/no budget audio recording hassle.
Outside has wind and bugs chirping for the next couple months.

Ideas:
- Two guys in a car arguing about what to do with the third guy outside the car.
- Couple on a park bench or under a pavillion planning X.
- Guy on a phone putting together a "deal" or project.
- Three (unlucky?) guys at an abandoned gas station waiting for a tow truck.
- A couple walk around/explore an abandoned house/factory/old rail yard discussing the history that happened there.
- Drug dealers doing their thing from their car or a strip mall's service area.
- Craigslist gone bad.
- Conversation while skipping/throwing stones.
- A few idiots discuss what a particular Bible passage means.
- Conversation over burger and cokes about a movie goes bad.
- A couple in a car plan a revenge killing as the intended victim remains unaware.
- A couple clean out old dad's refrigerator with effusive commentary, after he's dead.
- Who's this bloke in my trunk or storage shed?

Give people something they can work with.
Please don't waste your brain cells.

Darren is kind of on the same page as I was -- though he was not fond of the idea, either -- about putting out that kick-butt opening for a look-over by peers.

Maybe jump-starting a stalled project with a little feedback.

But I can see how the idea is unappealing to others, which is fine, too.

It was just something a little different to mix things up a bit.  Sometimes it is a challenge to keep the OWC fresh, and darn near impossible to get something everyone is happy with.  (You can't do horror every time...)

I thought maybe there might be fewer complaints with something as open-ended as "the first 10 pages of anything"

If you don't do the ten first pages thing, I think it would be a good idea, very good idea, to have a topic set up here, or at least a thread. I think there would be a lot of effective feedback from regulars that could either unstall the project with ideas or questions, or give some feedback on the premise itself. Maybe a logline should be included with something like that.

How about retrieving the last two years of SS spawned produced scripts-to-shorts, looking them over for commonalities, base OWC off of analysis results.

Ray, some of us aren't interested in writing no budget productions from film school students.

Why isn't Brett's Lie Detector on this list?

Jeff, I understand.
You're interested in writing something that no one will produce.
You like to write, so you write.
Got it.

Have another cuff of coppee.
Good morning!

I didn't include Brett's Lie Detector because:
A - I'm slighting him with intent and malice.
B - I'm green with sour grapes envy.
C - He refused my passionate advances.
D - He won't pay child support for his uncle daddy's red headed step child.
E - I searched ten or twelve pages deep on this thread and didn't see it

Whatever Don decides to do for an OWC, I just started a new feature today. Goal is to have a first draft in two weeks. Don't worry, I won't toss that draft up here.

Ray, I disagree completely.  I really do.  I don't think that's the point at all, and it comes off as a little condescending, as well.

Thank you, Bert.  Just the sight of that made me feel better!

Ray, my comment about no budget productions from film school students does not include everything, obviously, but it seems to be what you're suggesting people aim for.  To me, that's aiming pretty damn low, and I'm not for it in any way.

Don't get me wrong...you know I appreciate all your posts, insights, tables, graphs, etc.  Also got a real kick out of your analysis of the last OWC scripts...BUT...in many ways, the kick I get is a comical one.

You seem to like to stress the importance of writing scripts that require almost nothing or extremely minimal props, and you always note things like "rubber knife", or the like...and that always makes me laugh.

I mean, c'mon, seriously...who wants to see such a production?  Who's gonna be proud of such a thing?  Film students...that's who, and God bless 'em...nothing wrong with that.

I'm far from the student age and have way too critical an eye to even remotely consider having anything I write put together like that.  I'd never hear the end of it from my friends and family.  There's nothing wrong with it, if that's what you're aiming for, but it ain't for me.

Different strokes, folks...

C'mon, seriously.
Ask someone who's filming something if they don't hafta write a list down of all the shhhhstuff they gotta bring between cast & crew.

"Knife. Knife! Where the GD knife! Asisstant pissant, who's the numnuts in charge of the GD knife for this scene?"
"Um, boss. You're the director and the assistant pissant. YOU'RE the numnuts in charge of all the props".
"F#ck meeeeee.  Script rewrite! The killer uses a... gimme that... A PENCIL! to stab the heroine. Gold. It's gold, I tell ya!"

We all gots critical iiis for different things.

Indeed, different strokes, folks...

Ray, I mean absolutely no offense and I understand what you're saying and where you're coming from.

My point is this...

A few years ago, I was reading a piss poor feature horror script on SS.  I offered some constructive criticism, and the writer came back and said thanks, but we're already going into production, so it doesn't matter at this point.  I wondered how this could possibly be, because the script was just literally abysmal, so I asked where they obtained financing.  The dude came back and said he and his friend were putting all the money they could scrounge up and they took out loans from their parents and even friends of both families.

I was even more intrigued, and kept on digging, finally asking straight up, what the budget was and how much money they secured.

Turns out they got about $500, and were 2 kids below the age of 17, and had gotten $50 here and $25 there, all said, totaling $500.  On top of all that, the kid told me that a good portion of the loan was going toward rubber knives, rubber axe/hatchets, fake blood, wigs, and a "costume" for the killer to wear.

I got quite a chuckle out of that.

Point is, for 2 15 year old kids, that's all fine and dandy, but ain't what I'm looking for.

You're talking about production value and that still doesn't have to mean a lot of money. If you have the gear and people with experience operating it, it doesn't have to cost a lot. On that note, Old Wounds do not look that good. We were in a real hurry...

My short I wrote in a few hours for some guy in a hurry (seriously Wounded) was eventually produced by someone else. I got lots of feedback on it here, but never really rewrote it because I thought it was a dud myself, but they actually spent money on that production. Rented part of a hospital, had reall make-up and hair people...

You never know what can happen. Sometimes students make crummy little films out of your scripts. Sometimes people make good films. Sometimes your relationship with a director is really good and they ask you to write a feature for them. That happened to me with the director of Daddy's Home and Issues. He's waiting for me to write a feature. He was interested in Blackout. He liked the concept, but not the final script. Anyway, what I'm saying is, a short film can lead to much bigger things. However, if you're only waiting to sell that million dollar script to Hollywood....

No, Pia, I'm not saying that, and I do agree with everything you just said here.

My point is that when I write a short (for an OWC or whatever), I don't write to a no or low budget concept.  That doesn't mean it has to be an expensive shoot either, but unlike Ray's advice, I write what I think would/could look good on film, with an actual budget of some kind and professional people involved.  From there...yeah, hopefully something bigger could come of it, in terms of relationships or just word of mouth, based on the finished product.

One of these days you guys...one of these days...

Interesting actually. I thought about it and I think I tend to write low budget stuff without even trying. Maybe my imagination is small. I just don't have BIG films in my head when I write. Maybe that's just an individual thing that comes naturally. Some write "small" while others write "big"? Maybe that's why a lot of my scripts get filmed. I just automatically think small whithout trying to. I know I would have a hard time writing something big with lots of characters and locations. I think my head would hurt.

Budget considerations are important.

As always it comes down to what you're trying to achieve.

Short Films rarely make money. Those that do win multiple cash paying prizes from the major festivals. There's a certain type of film that wins these...they tend to be social realism, or historical etc...types of shorts with strong themes and a more independent/European sensibility...rarely the type of short you see on here tbh.

So if you're interested in those kind of filmmakers making your stuff, that's the kind of stuff you should write.

Then you might have genre stuff that's more geared towards showcasing your ability to create a feature in a similar vein (Saw, the Raven). They are rarely big budget pieces themselves...they are high concept and suggest a big budget, but in actuality are usually just a small slice of the bigger picture.

There's also the issue that whilst some things are possible on a low to no budget...simple scenes in parks or whatever. How many filmmakers actually have the capability to even do those things properly...let alone much more ambitious stuff?

A professional production of a simple story would still cost a lot if you factor in the cost of the crew, set design, camera, PL lenses, acting talent etc.

If you start throwing in mass crowd scenes and multiple locations you're looking at tens of thousands of pounds...money that no-one is going to spend on a short that isn;t going to rake in the awards.

I don't in the least consider your imagination "small".
I think you may be naturally pragmatic, especially when writing to direct, shoot, and edit yourself.

There's practically no money to be made in producing shorts.
They are business cards.
They are bait.
They are liberator pistols.

Even regarding features, a plausible argument is that you like things personal and close rather than canonizing epics, or at least to write that way.
I can appreciate art I cannot produce myself. Same thing. I like epics, but can't write 'em fer sh!t.

Maybe.

I think there are many fantastic scenes with beautiful dialog and light action in feature films that are inexpensive to produce.
What would have been so expensive to film about many of the conversations in BLACK SWAN - other than salaries?
How about in THE FIGHTER, or THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT, or WINTER'S BONE?
I watched SNATCH the other night. How difficult would it be to write a scene like the one with Turkish asking about the sausages between harassing Tommy about the pistol?
"What's it for, Tommy? To shoot 'zee' Germans"?
That was some funny sh!t.
Costumes aside, how about Col. Landa's interrogation of the French farmer in INGLORIOUS BASTERDS?
Landa's thought process-to-verbal swordplay was fantastic. It stressed me all to h3ll.

Ten minutes of thoughtful or snappy conversation in any of those would be easy to record in several takes and edit together.
Finding actors that can deliver is the hard part, after thinking up of a good situation + great dialog, that is.

Lately I've been over analyzing strangers in public places trying to find someone that isn't boring as dirt, someone that projects innate interest.
Generally accepted attractive people is one thing.
Personality that holds more than passing attention is something altogether special.

I'll watch a few people together and (try to) imagine a role for them in what drama?
And so I find myself mulling over practical roles for just-above-regular people I could approach and say "Hi. I'm considering beginning a small film project and would like to know if you would be interested in becoming part of it"?

Okay, enough producer talk on a screenplay site.

I watched THE DEVIL'S REJECTS the other night (definitely NOT a three act, two constraint, learn along Act II, Part 1 + "Oh, No!" all is lost! Part 2 structure) (and not my cup of tea, either) and was wondering (for maybe 0.2 seconds) if "devil's" or "rejects" would render a better site search result.
And I got to wondering...

"What would be the biggest PITA title name to search for? Some name with the most common words in the English language that would render a bazillion search results = useless"?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_common_words_in_English
What short story could we write for a OWC that is generated simply from a title that would be problematic in a search?

Just a passing thought.
Nothing I'm married to.
Just something.

"Lately I've been over analyzing strangers in public places trying to find someone that isn't boring as dirt, someone that projects innate interest."

Reminded me of something. Last winter, I was meeting someone outside a coffee shop, so was outside waiting. This gentleman walked out of the shop and for some reason left an indelible image in my mind, even though I only saw him for about 30 seconds.

He had to be in his mid 80's. He was one of those guys who you could tell from a glance that life could never defeat, never diminish his positive energy. He wore an older style suit, but one that remained stylish and immaculately maintained. He walked to an old Cadillac, one of the big fellas, that was in mint shape, and had a warm smile for anyone he saw.

There were two things that stuck out about him to me. First, as I've mentioned, was the sense of positive energy about the guy. You could tell he would be that way until his last breath.

The second thing that stood out to me was this: he wore sneakers. For some reason that really stood out to me. Here was this guy who held fast to the images of success that he grew up with: a nice suit and a big car. I'm not talking about someone rich and flaunting it, just someone who's saying "it's a hard world, and I've made something of myself". And he looked exactly as I imagine he would have wanted to look as a young man hoping to make it in the world. The image was complete. All except the sneakers. They were the one sacrifice he made to the perfect image of success he carried all his life.

And why not? Why walk in pain?

Made a lasting impression with me for some reason.

"And why not? Why walk in pain?"
Exactly!

So... what was the "Why walk in pain" parable he would impart such sage wisdom to his adult grandson deeply troubled over X?
How did that conversation go?

Or would he be telling some police investigator to go f#ck off with same story?

Who was it here that wrote the ex-CIA/NSA operative/handler that reminisced over using baseball to defeat Fidel Castro?
Could your guy portray that character?!

Locally there's librarian that we're on first name basis with but little more who would be great as an intelligent, sparkling yet quiet while holding reserved power character.
What can I do with her?!
Who can I find to play opposite her for what role?!
Something I think she could do that wasn't just plain ridiculous.
What IS that story?!

Sometimes the junk pile in my mind just rolls around for time eternal until I find several pieces that click together.

Hey, BTW...
Rick, how you holding out over there amidst ya'll's insanity?

Ray, the scene you mentioned in Basterds, filmed by pretty much anyone other than QT, would turn out being a complete mess and downright painful to watch.  It's 20 minutes or so, isn't it?  Much of it is ludicrous dialogue.  It's played out in 3 different languages, complete with subtitles.

Don't think it's an easy thing to write or film, cause it's far from either.

Devil's Rejects - AWESOME!!!!  Very non standard structure and everything.  My kind of film!!!

I personally love House of 1,000 Corpses, and even saw it in the theater.  I've probably seen it at least 15 times since.  There are serious issues with it, but there's alot to like as well.  A low budget hurt, obviously, but the script itself is a mess in the last 30 minutes.  Great characters, though.

Not for the squeamish for sure.

Okay, back on subject regarding script writing and budget considerations.

Likely many of you have seen at least one of these Phillips Cinema "Unicorn" thingie dingies.

Expensive 4:55 short - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59QlMAZc6ow

Not anywhere near as expensive (People's Voice Award, BTW) 3:00 short - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goyTKXTTtiI

NOTE: Perhaps I'm just being cynical, but I find it interesting that the Barney Cokeliss, Assistant Director to Ridley Scott, non-winning entry, interviews farrrrrr outnumber the unattached Cedric Petitcollin, People's Voice Award winning entry, interviews.

This is a nod towards AJR's statement the other day about how important it is that you get off your a$$, put on your pomoter's hat and hustle your work because unless there's some notoriety to rub elbows with - no one's gonna care about your award winning sh!t, let alone just plain sh!t.

JMsh!ttyHO, of course.

I pm'd Don and asked him if there's going to be an August OWC.

I started a new feature last weekend. A sci-fi of all things. I'm 20 pages in.

Hopefully we're going to reshoot some Old Wounds scenes next week so that might slow things down, but other than that I'm almost feeling like I'm getting out of my writing/reading slump.

I finally got off my arse and wrote 2 pages of a new short. Hadnt done any since May. Feel inspired again and am gonna do a new Simply one too.

Like most people(I guess) I have about 4 or 5 started features of varying lengths and genres, languishing on my hard drive. Maybe one day...

I hope, but Don usually gives us several days notice, unless of course he's gonna spring it on us again like last time.

So...is there going to be a OWC announced at midnight?

If not, I don't want to sit up and wait.

Shabbat shalom, Jeff. Hope you enjoy.

I've been studying and reading and I don't know if I will participate in a "sprung on ya OWC", but I will try and be here to read and do critiques. It's quite possible that I will be going to Israel this November, but things need to be worked out if that is to be the case...

If I do, I will be here to share. If I ever seem absent, know that it's not really so-- only I'm feeling like Ray... very busy. Yes, trying to keep up, but so many things demand attention.

In any case, I'm excited to see the next OWC in progress no matter when it's scheduled (for).

Sandra

so where are you Jordan!!

I'm tinkering with a sci-fi at the moment, but I would love to sink my teeth into something a bit nastier. I still haven't managed to finish Scream For Me and someone is waiting for that one. He wants lots of blood and gore...

Hey Jeff -

Yep - an action parody, anyway.  All in one weekend?  (G).  I'm planning on one a day, just to let each sink thoroughly into my subconscious and brew a bit...  (Which means, no actual writing for at least another month.)  Though ideas are percolating...

I'm kicking around my first feature script at the moment. Its a cycle of action that needs to be done before I can continue. Its a take on an old sci-fi series (can ya guess what one?).

But I gotta finish it off or it will bug me from here on out.

But I'm open to a 7W thing or something else. And I promise to deliver my usual assortment of spelling errors, bad grammar, week plot ect. :]

Well, thought I'd resurrect this thread by saying I hope Don springs the OWC on us tomorrow.  Perfect timing for a short script challenge.  For me, at least.

As he said in the News thread:  "It will be either late August or September.  Like the last one, I'm going to spring it on you.  It will be limited to only members of the discussion board so the turnout will be small."

Let the countdown begin.

I don't know if Don will come up with something or not. It's his birthday on the 6th I think so maybe he's busy.

Maybe we can do a mini 24hr thing or something? Or by the end of Labor Day on Monday? Maybe a Labor Day script 10 pages or less?  Just tossing out ideas as fast as they come to me so not very well thought out to be honest.

Simple. We have two hours to write one page only.

We copy/paste here.

Anyone who is online here is welcome to chime in who they like or dis-like.

If Pia is not in for it, we chose from two themes,

The grime reaper in Vegas...

Or

A mans last words before he is sucked out of a plane...

Trust me, I just made these up in less than 10 seconds. You pick Jeff.

How about a five page minimum by Monday night any genre, but it has to be about Labor Day?

Come on ladies?

Pick wich one and let's dance.

One page, two hours. If the theme doesn't suit you, think of another.

If not, it's dealers choice. One of the two and the clock starts 9PM central. One hour from now. I am getting drunk and cooking some fantastic Kobe tonight.

A i said, I'm not really much a 1 pager guy.  I'd do 2 or 3 and we'd have to agree on a subject/genre.

I'm drinking heavily as well.

We'll reveal out choices in 1 hour and start writing.

I can tell all of SS is waiting on pins and needles for this.

Meow Meow, c'mon, now.  It's all for fun.  I know you're drinking, and I know it's going to be more fun than watching beef bullion boil.

Hopefully, you will at least be our 1 Judge.

I'll read your 1 pager, but I have no interest in writing one in a couple of hours under the influence. 5 pages by Monday? No problem...

It's a 2 page pisser in 1 hour.  Only SS members as characters and a max of 5.  We'll each pick 1 "thing" that must be prevalent in the script.

Meow Meow, are you partying?  Hope so!!!  I'm getting quite hammied!!

So you are serious when you say my last skype didnt get to you?

Fair enough my friend.

You ready to do this?

Two elements, one page...

You choose the first element so we can get this on the road.

Sound good?

It's probably a good thing nothing came of it, or we'd be judging our own pissers!

Girl #1
"Mine are_______!

Girl 2
No, mine are!

Jeff
Well, let me be the judge of that...let's see here...
