But congratulations for what?  Not dying?

How morose -- or ironic, perhaps -- and anyway, it seems to me that the act of survival carries its own, intrinsic rewards.

Jeff,
I'll have you know that was the last picture of my great aunt at the moment a high impact quail egg hit the back of her throat during the national high impact quail eating contest.

She never recovered Jeff...

I seldom contribute to these sorts of threads -- not sure what they are for, really -- and maintaining my own birthday a closely-held secret.

As I was researching why we celebrate birthdays I came upon an interesting fact.  If you take 57 people at random then there is 99% probability that two of them have the same birth date. But on average only 25 people are required to find two with the same birthday.

This has nothing to do with why we celebrate.  So here's some interesting links...

http://www.jeremysilman.com/astrology/why_celebrate_birthdays.html
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006020108105
http://rhomylly.hubpages.com/hub/Why_do_people_celebrate_birthdays
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday

But what I've always heard is

- first to be celebrated was the sun's birthday on the solstice.
- then royalty - Kings started celebrating theirs because there was records of when they were born.
- then once records were kept for everyone they started celebrating their birthdays as well.

So the answer is easy.  Tradition.

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes, tho these wishes also go out to all of you.  Each anniversary of SimplyScripts is a testament to all of you since without you, the site and the discussion board would be very much a one sided conversation.

Special thanks to Bert and Ryan.  While all the birthday congratuations made my day, this one put the second biggest birthday grin on my face (next to the one received from the short Chinese woman I live with).

I seldom contribute to these sorts of threads -- not sure what they are for, really -- and maintaining my own birthday a closely-held secret.

But I do make an annual concession to the birthday train for this one, bestowing my best wishes upon the titular beneficiary.

Bert, you must be great at children's parties.

In short, thank you all for noticing I haven't died.

Good luck with your work.

Don
