As regards shorts, no. In terms of features, I don't imagine actors as characters, but once I have a good idea who the main characters are, I go over them and ask 'what would attract an actor to this part'? If there is nothing interesting or unique about the character, then something is wrong. I do sometimes imagine if certains actors would be a good fit for certain roles.

I think I know why one of my features was being picked for production btw. It's not that great a script IMO, but the actor playing the main character liked the character and wanted to play him... I had no one in mind when I wrote it. At least not that I can remember. But, then again, I don't remember much of anything.
