This month's OWC...Question (currently 1676 views)

With the February OWC up and running, I have a question?
I have noticed over the last couple of days that around 25 to 30 people are on Simply Scripts at any given time sense the scripts have been uploaded for our viewing pleasure.
Now, I have only been able to get to about a third of them this weekend but plan on trying to cover the majority of the submitted scripts by time they are revealed.
My question is this-
With 24 scripts submitted, why is it only a select few members are taking the time and energy to read and review these scripts when it seems obvious that there is a large number of people who submitted scripts who haven’t so much as given a single read?
If only 50% of the people who submitted a script reviewed all the entries, that would mean 12 reviews.
In a perfect world, all 24 scripts would receive 24 OR MORE reviews.
But we know that’s not going to happen.
Instead, it sure does seem like there are a lot of onlookers waiting to see what is said about their work but not putting any time into others work.
Some of those invisibles are search engines, I think. And some of the scripts are up to 10 or more reviews. The ones that are released last are at a disadvantage a little. Also, I think if the first review is bad, it might discourage reads from others. Especially if the first few are negative. Just the way it works.
I think it's early. They've been up a day and a half.
Though I have to admit, I only got a chance to start reviewing around 12pm today. Was away all weekend, with no internet access. So, maybe that's the case with some of the no-shows.
Course, I've reviewed about 1/3 of the scripts, myself by now....
It's nothing new, though. No sense getting worked up. This happens every OWC that I've seen. I'm actually just glad I don;'t have to read 46 scripts! This number works out real nice.
And some of the reviewers didn't enter a script and are doing a fine job of reading:
Jeff, Cornie and JDub take a bow (and anyone I missed)
I also want to praise Jeff for an enormous effort in reading all the scripts, especially as he hasn’t entered one. I think and I don’t mean to go off topic here but Jeff gets a bad rap sometimes but he certainly puts in the time and contributes a lot to SS. My humble opinion in the time I've been here of course.
Back on topic. I’m personally going to read every single one but I need to take breaks in between reads otherwise I get all witched out. To think that I also want to read James “Willowick” feature sometime this week as well. I don’t even like witches!
But I do like reading scripts and learning…
Well done to everyone BTW on the OWC, all of them have had something good about them, some excellent work.
we have some talented writers on here... even the shorts i had a lot of trouble getting through (confusing narratives, overwritten dialogue/actions), ... were extremely well written
I've only been around since October (I think) and only started actively posting in December, so I don't even know what true pain is (46?!?), but I'm not counting people out yet. It's a weekend, so yes, people could be reading, but they could also be away from their computers. I'm not too sure how long this lasts before names are revealed, but I assumed there is some time for reviews and reads to even out before that happens.
I participated in the unofficial/unauthorized OWC in December and there were less than 10 scripts if I am not mistaken. We still got a decent amount of reviews. It's tough to read the first 10 pages of 24 features. Even when the writing is good, that's not enough of a feature to get a good payoff. It's easier to get tired of reading.
I trust more people will show up. I'm really liking what I'm reading so far!
'Artist' is not a term you should use to refer to yourself. Let others, and your work, do it for you.
I agree in principle, but I think there has to be some leeway as different people have different lifestyles. I did a big session on Saturday gone - 6 hours reading - but I can't do that everyday (kids, family, job etc).
I'd love to read the lot of them (and I'm going to try to), but there's a couple that I'd read twice now and I'm thinking along the lines of "...if you've nothing nice to say...".
And some of them are difficult to review even if they're okay/good, but as long as - generally - peole who post can read one or two, then plus people who didn't enter (and I feel a little bit obliged to put more effort into reviewing as I didn't make the effort to enter), then that should leave a decent number of reviews for each script. JMO.
BTW - overall - standard is pretty high - I'm impressed by the quality overall.
I think it's just a situation where those who do intend to review... will. Whether or not it takes them until after the names are already revealed, they'll be sure to get them done. It happens like that every time where you have the quick reviewers and the slow reviewers, but they both review.
You shouldn't be discouraged from reviewing just because you have nothing but bad things to say about a script. You just need to be able to say it in a courteous way. Kinda like telling a kid you have to put their dog down. Be gentle. =D
