Have there been any successful scripts that originated from here or members of here that have been produced? Just curious as to the level of success some of the people here have had.

If so, anything I would know?

Plenty of features have been optioned. A LOT of the short scripts have been produced. Maybe even 1000. Several features have been produced. However, if you mean writers actually getting paid Hollywood salaries, I don't think there has been any.

Possibly 1000 shorts? That's awesome! I should hammer out a few and see what happens. I'm new to all of this so can you explain to me what exactly an option is? I guess a better question: what are the options contigent on?

Just because a lot of short scripts here get produced, does not mean that anyone gets paid for them. there is generally no money in shorts. However, they are a lot of fun to write.

An option is when somebody is interested in your script and will pay you for the right to produce that script. However, it is not a purchase. It is merely a contract that gives the producers  a certain timeframe to find funding for the film. That can be 6 months, 12 months or longer. If they fail to put together funding after the time runs out then the script goes back to you. They no longer have their rights to the script. the amount of an option can be anything depending on the project. Typically it is $1. the reason being it is $1 is because money has to exchange hands for the option contract to be legit. I do know someone a few years back from here that was paid $8000 for an option on his script. He was all excited as you can imagine. But, after that nothing happened. They failed to find the money to make this film so the script went back to my friend who got depressed...

What will happen, is that you will repeat any and every mistake you make, on each consecutive script.

You don't learn how to write scripts simply by writing scripts.

If you read scripts here, as well as writing them; feedback to people and take on board what they are feeding-back to you -- you'll go through a learning process.

My understanding is that lots of directors and producers check the scripts on here - lots of them aren't active members. But the more active you are, the more likely you'll be to actually develop your writing - an increase in expose and skill.

Hope to see you around.

Already critical of my scripts despite having never read one, huh? Thanks for the confidence. However, I do believe that one who writes scripts and receives feedback on how to improve will do much better than those who simply read and never write.

That being said, I've been reading scripts here for quite some time now and have been writing a few for about a year. I'm new here and haven't posted any because I don't feel I'm at my best potential quite yet. I do have others who read my scripts who have been in the industry that provide feedback. I plan on posting some here once I feel satisfied with them.

I have already critiqued a couple shorts and offered some feedback. Having just signed up a couple days ago, I think I need a little time to be more active. I can only make so many posts a day, you know? Believe me, you'll see me around and get to know me and my ability, or lack thereof, soon enough.

Don't get worked up about the comment. It might have to do with you using the word "hammer" out a few Shorts. Remember, this is a site for writers. Every word matters!

Mehdoh,

Welcome! As others have said, keep writing and keep reading scripts here. I only started writing screenplays since last October, but I've grown a lot since then. I've been lurking in the background in this site, and it's a great resource.

I've even met contacts through this site. Some of which I've written for or currently writing short films that are either produced or in pre-production. Keep an open mind and explore all the opportunities this site will offer you. You'll be surprised.

Good point. I'll remember to watch my phrasing better from here on. I didn't mean for it to come off as though shorts were easy. I just meant they are relatively quick to write compared to feature films.

Will do! I'm writing my first short now so I can post it up here and see what people think of my writing style. I look forward to hearing your feedback!

This site has helped me tremendously. I think the comment 'hammer out' some shorts ....well, let me say I used to think I could sit down and bang out a script and I can, BUT it's not pretty. I can and have written a feature in less than four days. Again, it's not pretty and not good writing. I am learning to SLOW down and write smarter before posing or sending my first drafts to even friends to read.

I'm brand new at this but it's a slow process and I hate slow..You've probably been doing it longer than I have....but just do it...write...post some here...and you will get better and better. If you'd like me to ever read a short for ya...pm me or shoot me an email and I'd be happy to.

Look forward to reading your work. And...welcome to the boards.

Well, I guess in a word - yeah, but Pia's right about using the word 'hammer' especially in conjunction with the terms 'I'm new to all this' - which in all honesty - isn't totally accurate, if you've written scripts and had them critiqued - maybe I read it wrong - misinterpreted it - but it came across to me like that. You've obviously got a little more background knowledge than first implied. I've not really come across many people who've 'truly' never written a script before and got it bang on first time - not saying it doesn't happen - but people usually need a little time to hone the skill and figure out their style - you sound like you may have some of that under your wing already.

Anyhow - you sound like you've got a little attitude with you - I like that !!   - welcome on board - hope the site's useful to you.

Lol! I'm glad you like the attitude! I think it's more of a brutally honest/bluntness thing. People either love it or hate it. I didn't mean any disrespect by my comment of hammering them out so I apologize. I do have some background but I consider it very minimal and seeing how it's a family member that has been helping me, I take his relatively light criticism with a grain of salt. Let's put it this way: I've never had the joy of getting a script ripped to shreds nor have I had the thrill of getting anything produced. Really more of a hobby that I'm trying to get more serious about.

I find it amazing that some of you can write a feature film in a few days. It literally takes me a couple months as I always find myself going back to make changes and alterations. I'm not sure if that's necessarily a good thing but I hope by learning more from all of you, I'll get better and faster at all of this.

In regards to the subject of the thread, I have had a script picked up from here that is currently in pre-production called House on the Hill 2 (originally House in the Woods 2) seen here first.  And, yes, WGA minimums are paid, but it's a low-budget feature.  Additionally, I've had a producer contact me recently about a script I posted here a few years ago, and we're negotiating the sale of that, now.  Simply Scripts has been very, very helpful and put me in a position to leave the day job in just a few weeks!

So much for the expression "don't quit your day job"! Nice work, and congrats.

Thanks, man!  Still waiting for the check to arrive, but I actually have two scripts on the rain-slick precipice of production.  Very involved with the horror flick, not so much with the other, much-higher-budgeted film, but a very exciting time!

I would love love love my screenplays to be picked up!

One of my short scripts was filmed by a film student for her project, and even that was incredibly exciting for me, especially since I'm still quite new at writing and started quite young as well.  Besides that, I've actually been contacted a few times about scripts I wrote on here.  One of them never came to fruition unfortunately.  Another writer asked me to cowrite a script with him, but it didn't work out.  So still hoping!

My scripts:

Façade:  In a "film noir" set in the 1950's, a detective investigates the murder of a teenage boy in the quintessential 50's American suburbs, and as he slowly peels back the veneer of the picture perfect family, he realizes nothing is what it seems, unaware of what secrets he will uncover.

Thanks, again!  Had a phone call yesterday with the director about storyboards for the first scene, which was incredibly fun.  So, I'm proof that it does happen!
