Merry Christmas, my Aussie brother! Hope Santa was good to you and brought you a few of the things you wanted.
I have this sneaky suspicion that he's not going to be bringing me what I'm after... |

It's complicated Pia.
Some can see it as a secular attempt to remove Christ from Christmas and indeed some may want just that.
Other see it as a means in early times to save time and money when printing articles in newspapers and other prints by saving the space and typesetters time in placing the extra letters for print.
Others see it as pro-Christ denoting the cross as a symbol of his sacrifice on the cross for our sins.
I think the heart is the true guide as to your meaning behind it.
For me...
It's CHRISTMAS

Well, I'm not religious, but as a writer, Xmas just looks like lazy writing. |

It's not secular and it's not new. Xmas was first used around 1551.
Xmas (n.) "Christmas," 1551, X'temmas, wherein the X is an abbreviation for Christ in Christmas, from first letter of Greek Christos "Christ" (see Christ). The earlier way to abbreviate it was Xp- or Xr-, corresponding to "Chr-," and the form Xres mæsse for "Christmas" appears in the "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" (c.1100). |

Quoted from mcornetto It's not secular and it's not new. |
I'm familiar with that dictionary explanation and agree. So far as the secular angle is concerned, it depends entirely on who you ask. I never mentioned it was new. I was simply giving varied opinions of what I've learned from sources over the years. To me X denotes Christ. In fact, in every email, written conversation, letter, or report I write, be it personal or professional, I end it giving Christ the last word. Shawn..... >< |

A Belated Merry Christmas to the Simply Scripts cast and crew! Apologies for the tardy wishes, I've been a tad preoccupied this week. Pending Scriptshadow review for my feature, Clone Wife, has filled my brain. Once I get put out of my misery, I can hopefully start to think straight again. But until then... I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support. Now, back to biting my fingernails until tomorrow. Holiday Regards, E.D. |
