Agreed with most of them but found The Master a little too cold for my tastes. Phoenix deserves the Oscar for that performance, though. Enjoyed PSH's performance, but it didn't feel like a massive stretch from what he's done before. Phoenix, however, made me feel uncomfortable watching him - there was a sense of palpable fear in me. Never quite knew what he was going to do or what he was capable of. The Master was an excellent showcase of what a great director PTA is, but it was just too empty on the narrative front for me. Kind of like Shame and Drive, which are two other recent examples of beautiful, wonderfully directed films that I couldn't connect to - they feel more like a beautiful artwork.

Haven't seen Zero yet to comment - still got Lincoln, Les Mis, Django and Beasts to watch from the Best Picture category.
My sneaky tip is Life of Pi to pick up the big ones. Beautiful, brilliant film. |
