So both Siskel and Ebert are gone. Indeed an end of an era. I remember watching their show to see who would give the "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" to, and for the most part I agreed with their assessments. Certainly, Roger Ebert had his critics, but no can deny his influence on the movie industry (he won a Pulitzer for his column, btw). He could be pedantic at times, but by and large, he had a good eye for movies both big and small and was never afraid to speak (or write) his opinion. RIP.

Very sad news. I have very little time for movie critics, but Ebert was different. If I wanted a view on a film, he'd be my go-to guy. RIP Roger.

This is a shock because I just read an article yesterday that his cancer had returned and he was taking a "leave of presence" as it was put. But there was no indication it was so advanced. Sorry to hear it. I used to own the Siskel & Ebert movie review book when I was a kid and watched their show religiously. Roger had that knack for providing criticism that was eloquent yet accessible. No other critic has been able to fill the void since he retired from the public eye.

Ah, fuck. Seriously, damn.
If I wanted a view on a film, he'd be my go-to guy.
I was exactly the same. He was one of the few critics whose view I actually respected.
RIP.

If I wanted a view on a film, he'd be my go-to guy.
I will add another "me too".
I always checked what he had to say before dropping cash at the cinema, pretty much without fail.
And agreed with him about 80% of the time, I would guess.
But I'll bet he gets his own screening room with surround-sound and all the popcorn he wants now.
Hey, it's my tiny, little

I was shocked when I heard. I knew he was in the hospital, but I don't know... I just wasn't expecting this. I haven't been reading his reviews for very long, but I'll still miss them. RIP. Will

Not just a movie critic, a brilliant writer. He's a Chicago icon that's right up there with Jordan, Ditka, Brickhouse, Banks, Daly and Oprah. I'd read his reviews every Thursday or Friday whether I was interested in seeing the movie or not. I used to live to see him give a film one star or no stars because what would follow would be a fabulous romp through the English language. He could equally produce wonderful prose on the best films as well. Sadly, this leaves a void...

RIP Roger Ebert. You were always the first reviewer I went to whenever looking up a new film. You will be missed.

His wife said he died smiling. What more can you ask for? A cornerstone of my movie youth has passed on. He made movie analysis even fun for this kid. E.D.
