This is kinda cool. It gives me hope that maybe if I just have grit, I can turn my life around and make something of it.

"I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior. The man we called 'Max'."

THE PINBALL WARRIOR (scifi, WIP, ~30 pg.)
A STAND AGAINST EVIL (short, 9 pg.)

I've always believed that nine times out of ten, hard work trumps natural talent which doesn't work hard.

I was never the most athletic kid, but achieved some minor sporting success because I will be damned if there was anyone who used to work and train as hard as I did, back in the day... and then I discovered alcohol and girls

Basically means I'm fucked. I'm lazy and constantly think of myself as a genius walking amongst morons.

I'm with her on the concluding message -- there's life after failure -- and I think it's an interesting and pertinent reminder. But the headline is missing something (as they usually are): it should read, "Student Test Scores Show That 'Grit' Is More Important Than IQ...In Achieving Success As Measured By Standardized Tests." Newton or Einstein would have pushed her results even further against IQ if they'd been in her eighth grade class. Standardized testing rewards the adherent, not the innovator. Of course, our culture often does the same. So I guess all I mean is that I disagree with the definition of success suggested by the article.

(Maybe I'm just bitter over my less-than-astounding high school marks).

Not read the article, but perserverance has always been key.

I've read that people who have written goals, and also write measurable deadlines for things also tend to succeed much more easily.

Well, if we could only standardize success. But I think it's the extrapolation here that's at question  and maybe why the IQ peeps tail off (boredom?). I think perseverance pays as long as there's some modicum of talent there.

It's good news for me mind, as it means success is merely round the next corner, ahm, next corner, ahm, next corner, ahm, next corner, ahm, bugger. Right back where I began.
